Tankadin Spec?Follow

#1 May 12 2008 at 12:07 PM Rating: Decent
ok so after searching NUMEROUS forums, on NUMEROUS sites, i have not gotten a straight answer that satisfies me. so here it is:
~ Aside from disscussing tankadins for PvP or PvE(since i will switch at 70)~

What is the best spec for a leveling tankadin?

On one side, i have heard so many people say that prot is the "obvious" choice, due to the ability to take damage and ability to hold groups... but i hear they dont do **** for damage at times such as casters or if not taking damage at the time... and i want damage (its the ego lol)

But the other side says retribution will not give off the right armor from the gear and cant take the tank position... but isnt the damage what i want as a tank? (i have been a resto healer most of my WoW days as a 70 shammy) and like i said. i want the damage as a tank from retri.. but a TANK not just "another off-tank or dps"

so please help me out bc i have talents that im waiting to use and respec and would love to finaly make the decision.

tahnks!

Well, i may not have been playing my pala for very long...but if you wanna play a tankadin you go prot. If you spec ret, then your a retadin. Ret can do some nice burst damage, and can tank somewhat pre-outlands. But if you want to tank then Prot is the way to go, even for leveling. And actually prot paladins can do a decent amount of damage when tanking or AoE grinding. Ret aura, blessing of sanctuary, holy shield, and consecration, plus normal melee attacks = lots of dmg being done at once. Its just all in small ammounts but comes in very very fast. Atm im usually #1-2 on the dps charts (pala only 44, and the dps suck at my level for some reason *noobs*). But if you want to see high numbers and just be a DPS in most groups go ret. Its fairly fun. But if you want to tank and still do good damage, go prot.

p.s. Prot also makes you popular with people if you can tank well, and will get you groups like crazy. People always want a good tank for instances while leveling.

If you want big numbers, you are not a tank. If you want to tank, you cannot be concerned with big numbers. That's just the way it is. It's a balancing factor. Imagine how imbalanced things would be if a tank was topping DPS charts! "We need another DPS? Well, there's a tank in LFG, let's get him!" Yea, not gonna happen.

That said, before you get to Outland, a Ret spec CAN hold aggro and survive well enough to tank: you just have to know what you are doing, and in cases, be prepared to give up your 2H and SoC in favor of a sword/board and SoR. I was Ret/Holy through to 60 all the way till the pre-BC patch when I went Prot, and I tanked every 5-man and UBRS (10-man). I did use some more defensive gear though when I tanked, seeing my "big numbers" decrease. So it can be done. In Outlandl though, I wouldn't trust a non-Prot to tank unless, maybe, they outleveled the instance.

To tank you don't need "damage" you need "threat", which has less of a line drawn between them for a Paladin or Druid tank as we tank BY doing damage. Thing is though, we tank by Holy damage, where Ret deals mostly Physical damage.

Short hand, if this were true, you'd see Fury Warriors as MT in Sunwell, not Prot Warriors. Extreme? Maybe, but you need to realize DPSing and tanking are not one in the same, ever, at all. The closest this can come to being true is massive AOE pulls with Consecrate spam.

I was the number 1 DPS in regular mana tombs the other day (level 65).

It made me cry... we had a mage, a rogue and I think a shadow priest. I even told the mage he could AoE after consecrates...

And I've done 30% of the DPS in a Heroic Sethekk Halls. Does that mean that I am 1337 DPS? No: I was fully epiced out and the DPS were still in blues mostly, and I used 0 CC.

Of course if you don't have competent DPS or they just are not geared as well, then sure, the tank can top the chart.
