Ok .. I'm just starting down the warrior road. A lot of it is confusing to me at the moment, but I'll get there. (still in my teens)

I'm looking at going with the Arms/Protection build. I don't live for damage. I can level slower and that will be fine as long as I'm able to try tanking the lower level instances. (if not, I won't learn how to do it)

My question is what is the best placement of talent points in the build as I level up?

grab a big 2h and go down the fury tree til you get to 2/2 imp slam. learn to hit slam after white hits. when you have enough points to go down and snag mortal strike as well, go down and grab it. you should be able to tank up to regular level 70 instances (maybe not shattered halls, depending on your gear) as long as you fill out deflection, imp tclap, cruelty, and 2/5 imp demo shout... TECHNICALLY, the rest of your spec could be crap and you'd still be able to tank those instances if you follow the correct rotation and aren't severely undergeared.

Also for imp slam, if you go down that road, You might want a swing timer if your not used to your latency. Try to hit slam as soon as your weapon goes up to swing, the dmg will be done but due to latency/ server lag the number will show up later. Since slam resets your swing timer your want it the closest to 0 as you can get for max DPS

Couple of things:

Leveling as prot is only really viable after lvl 50, when you get Devastate. At that point, you can survive a lot and still have enough damage so you don't need to get up and make a sandwich during each battle.

You can easily tank any instance as any spec up until the mid-50s. Of course, a few prot talents helps a lot, but in general the low lvl instances have healers sitting on mana when you know what you're doing.

The only crucial low lvl talents that I would suggest are Deflection, and Improved Thunder Clap, both of which are in the arms tree. The next useful talents I would get is Cruelty, which helps pretty much everything. After that, get what you want.

Ok .. thank you very much for the tips.

There is one other thing that is a little bit confusing to me. After that I think I will be set. All things considered (I'm a lower level) what is the best way to maintain aggro without breaking crowd control?

I'm prepared to protect the healer, but I fully expect overzealous mages, solo melee hunters, etc ... to make the job of holding aggro difficult at times. But for those actually trying to maintain CC, I really don't want to let them down while trying to take control of the chaos.

Control where you're fighting at. Thunderclap will break crowd control, but is pretty essential for tanking multiple mobs. Pull mobs with a ranged attack, line of sight casters, and move the mobs away from sheep/trap/sap/seduce targets. Move your camera to keep an eye on CCed targets while you're tanking - you need to keep track both of mobs you're tanking, and of CCed mobs. It's not too tough with some practice.

I was told for leveling purposes Imp Thunder Clap was a waste of points. My first 5 went into cruelty. Next is either defection or Peircing Howl. I'm a solo player. Hopefully get to tank DM soon. Is it ok to use a sword and board while being arms/fury or should I respect like OP and do arms/prot?

Imp TC is only a waste while leveling if you are looking to be uber leet DPS kill things faster.

If you plan on doing a lot of tanking while you level, then Imp TC is very nice to have. It really helps keep aggro on multiple mobs.

Do you need it?....No. You can tank without it. It is just easier to tank with it. Especially with the chaos that usually characterizes all instance running prior to lvl 70 (such as DM).
