So I'm thinking of prot (2nd change in 2 levels)Follow

Well I'm thinking of going from ret to prot to try out tanking and see how I like it. I have been reading up on all the stuff you need to know (like using a spelldamage weapon for instance), and I came across a question so simple it had no answer (because everyone already knows), so I am going to come out and ask it. Do you use SoR or SoV to tank?

SoV on long boss fights, SoR on short trash fights

Ah, thanks a bunch. And I'm glad I didn't get flamed.

(so far...)

The effectiveness of SoV depends on the speed of your weapon, it is based on a PPM system. I exclusively use SoR as I have a 1.6 speed weapon. Five stacks of SoV will ultimately provide a little more threat, but given how fast my weapon is, the proc rate is a little low, an "unlucky run" of no procs, combined misses (i'm not hit or expertise capped) means SoV can fade and you're back to square 1.

With a slightly slower weapon (1.8 - 2.0) it probably works better, but I prefer the reliability of SoR.

I prefer Arcane Torrent -- which means SoV isn't even an option on the table :D

But yea, +1 to the comments above, and reinforcing that SoR will be your normal instance-tanking seal.
