Yo, we did a gear check run last night of SSC with an ally guild and got our asses handed to us. No surprise there, we just wanted to see what it was like and get an idea of what we need to be doing. Us and our ally guild have Gruul on farm and we do pretty well. The guild I am in is a small but very competant guild and we fully clear Kara in under 4 hours. The guild we run with is a little better geared than us, but I feel not as skilled. All in all good people.

To my question now. This is me. http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Draka&n=Hydrophobia

Last night I was very happy as I placed a close second on the charts averaging a little over 900 dps (including my pet). I used a 3:2 rotation.

This is their top hunter. http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Draka&n=Eckz

He came in third place, just 100 DPS shy of me. He was NOT using a pet. This is what has me a little bit irritated. HOW?!?

I realize he has me by a little bit in gear, but I am seeing a lot of PvP stuff. I am no slouch, I BW everytime it was up, Rapid fire, Trinkets, everything. Neither of us was dead more than the other.

In closing I know I had higher numbers than him, would his pet have put him over the top though? How is an MM hunter with that build able to sustain almost 800 DPS??

Thank you in advance for shedding some light.

*Edit* We where in the same group as well.
*Edit* spelling

800 dps isnt that much, and using his pet he would have done ~950 dps.
And you should be Using a 3:2 rotation/macro, will up your dps by another 50-100.

Oh, and enchant/gem properly nub! ;P +8 agi/20AP (from pvp.. easy to get) gems in red sockets, +8 hit in yellow and +4 agi/6stam in blue sockets.
And, if you can get the S3 helm.
(even skip the S3 axe for it, you wont replace S3 helm with either T5 or T6.....)

The reason that that helm is so important is the meta socket, +3% critdmg is already 0.65% additional dps for you.
Doesnt look like much, but its equal to ~14 critrating already.

Oh and work on your trinkets, Bloodlust Brooch + Hourglass ftw!

Anyway... i got kinda distracted here...

edit: oh, right. I forgot the main point... :P
Go make a WWS account, Log the raid (Auto Combatlog helps you not forget to log) after the raid, rename the combatlog (i just add the date and SSC/TK/Grl etc) so it doesnt add stuff from your next raids and such and finally analyze the WWS log using this thread by Cheeky.

I know that that is a lot of work, but it definately helps in seeing who does what during raids.
And also why some people are that much higher on dps than you (or that much lower)

Thank you for the help Aethien. If i could pick your brain some more though....

/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Kill command
/cast Steady shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()

Just made up this macro you provided in the faq, will give it a try. however what is the difference between it, and this one?

Also following these I am totally leaving Arcane out of my rotation. I trust your advice, but will that be gimping me or helping. I used to shoot by doing esentually a 1:1 and hitting Arcane/Kill Command whenever KC was up.

Also it seems WWS is down. wouldnt let me create an account. Will try later. Again, thank you.

That is the difference, this macro wont start shooting steadyshot until autoshot has fired etc.
the other macro will fire either steadyshot, autoshot or kill command, wichever is ready.
Wich means that you will shoot some more steadies, clip some auto's and boost your dps a bit.

(I managed to do ~1460 dps on Karathress with purely that rotation and i had about ~125 more AP and 2.5% more crit than you have :) )

edit: If you are going for Lurker, put your pet on stay exactly where your other melee are standing on the main island.
This will allow it to dps as it doesnt get hit by spout and doesnt get knocked back by whirl.

(my personal record on that fight is a bit over 1250 dps ^^ )

Was that his gear for the raid? I ask because he's showing a 71 Hit Rating, and that's about how I look when I'm in my PvP gear since more than that isn't needed.

You've got a higher Hit Rating, but you're still not near the cap.

If you want to beat him, do this:
Gear wise you can improve with a mix of PvP gear and BoJ gear, Enchants/Augments and gems.
* S3 Helm, as was suggested above, is great. That was my first Arena purchase, and I didn't join an Arena team until S3.
* S3 Hunter 2-h will give you Hit Rating which you need, and might be better than your pair of 1-hands overall. Get the +35 AGI enchant for it. If you've got it in the bank you can run with Sonic Spear for the Hit Rating until you earn the 1k Arena points. Or grind up your Thrallmar rep and get the faction spear.
* BoJ crossbow. If your Guild clears Kara in under 4 hours then run it weekly until you've got your 150 BoJ and buy that crossbow. Get the crit scope for it, and if it's weeks away get the crit scope for your current bow. Having a +10 scope on Sunfury is a waste of potential. Dunno why you spend 100 BoJ on the pants when you were 50 away from another 10 DPS and a .1 second faster ranged weapon. Nothing impacts Hunter damage like your ranged weapon, that should always be your first upgrade path.
* BoJ chest to replace your blue dungeon set chest.
* Violet Eye exalted ring. Get to exalted and earn BoJ at the same time. If your Guild clears Kara in under 4 hours I'm surprised you aren't exalted yet. More Hit Rating you need.
* Enchants/Augments - Replace your hand enchant with +15 AGI. With raid buffs in T5 content you're better served with AGI than with AP. Replace the +10 STA enchant on your boots with +12 AGI or one of the mixed AGI enchants. Your pants are worth the epic patch, and you can usually find those on the AH or grind up the mats yourself and have a guildy craft them for you.
* Trinket. If you're going to run with a green trinket it may as well be serving a need. Terokkar Tablet of Precision will give you 22 Hit Rating. If you can, get Icon of Unyielding Courage or Romulo's Poison Vial instead. Once you are hit capped from other gear you can replace any of those with the typical Bloodlust Brooch.
* Gemming. If you're not Hit capped from gear, replace gems with Hit Rating until you are at the cap. Once you reach the cap from gear, swap them out for +8 AGI gems, or +10 if you have spare BoJ left for spinels or if you can find them on the AH. Socket bonuses are almost never worth going for, so don't unless it's the rare case where you can use a hybrid color gem to get a nice AP or AGI socket bonus. You don't need any STA gems, and green quality gems are pretty much free and are a sign that you're not too worried about trying to be the best you can now.

Make Drums Battle and use them on every cool down. Bring 3 stacks of Fel Mana pots to every raid, and use them. If you can't find them on the AH buy the mats and have a Guildy craft them for you. At the least bring 3 stacks of Super Mana pots and drink them on every cool down. Bring stat food, mana oil, and a flask for every raid. Flasks are best until the Boss is on farm, since they persist through death. If your Guild raids for more than 2 hours brink 2 flasks. Once a Boss is on farm you're better off with Major Agility and Major Mageblood elixirs.

Make sure you and your Pet get the right buffs. You want Kings for yourself, and Might for your Pet. Bring pet stat food. If you find Strength 5 scrolls on the AH, use those on your Pet. Buy AGI 5 scrolls for yourself. If you have any say about the raid groupings ask or put yourself into a group with a Spriest, an Enh Shaman, a cat Druid, or other Hunters in that order.

Do all of the above and you'll blow that other Hunter away every raid.

BUMP

Title is a little misleading but there is some really excelent advice in this thread. Any raid and even pre-raid hunter can benifit.

Edit:
This is my armory http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Uther&n=Grumpyd

My gear is nowhere near as good as yours but by using pots, food buffs and every other trick i can manage, I'm able to substain 800-900dps average running heroics and being on trap duty. According to Recount anyway.

Been trying the new macro. Unfortunately I have not yet been able to test it in an "all out @#%^ em up" mode yet. I do have a question though, Am I supposed to be mashing this key at the end of every GCD or at the end of every autoshot cycle?

Thanks as always for helping.

*Edit* Re gemmed some stuff, waiting on a guildie to help me out with the 28crit scope. Only about a %1 away from hitcap.

I use autohotkey :P
Just keep the button pressed and it'll do all the work.
Else, just spam it all the time, works best however dull it might be.

3:2 Macro, will transform into 1:1 if you have enough haste, UNLESS you're sitting in the middle ground, not quite enough haste for it to turn into a 1:1 but too much haste for a 3:2 (my current situation).

1:1 macro, what I switched back to.

Spam the hell out of the macro. Macro spamming is why, for many hunters, it's really worth going out and dropping 80-90 bucks on a G15 keyboard. It helps. I macro all my commonly used shots (steady, arcane, tranq), fein death, plus pet controls (attack and follow) to my g15 keyboard and it makes a WORLD of difference over using a standard keyboard.

That releaves a lot of pressure from your finger because you can just keep it pressed down :)
