Have you ever dreamed of tanks PvP-able in wow? (pvp, not AV)

What do you think would be necessary to include tank specced characters in pvp without entirely breaking the game?

I heard EQ2 tanks could taunt in pvp situations, which I believe could be an enormous difference in wow.

Upping the dps a little ? (and adjusting threat bonuses to keep pve unchanged)
Making taunts usable against players?
Adding real magical mitigation? (that could really break pve...)
special resistances to CC / dispells?

What do you say?

I always thought it would be interesting if players were tauntable. Of course they could just switch right back to their previous target, but it could buy some time/interrupt a cast if done at the right time.

I doubt such a change would ever be implemented though, in any form, and I can't really see Blizz ever making tanks "viable" for PvP.

Personally I don't really care if they ever do or not, as long as it doesn't affect PvE in a negative way. I don't PvP, and it's not just cause I'm a tank. I don't with any of my other toons either except sporadically. It's just one of those things imo that is the way it is and can't be "fixed" without drastically changing some other aspect of the game.

Add collision to player characters in WoW.

Imagine defending the entrance to Drek'thar's room by lining up 4 or 5 tank specced/geared warriors/paladins/druids with a couple healers each behind them.

You would basically have an impenetrable wall setup that the other team would be hard pressed to break through.

You then leave all of your ranged DPS behind them as well to pick off the invaders, while your rogues and cat druids stay stealthed outside and attack the flanks of the enemy.

from the leaked footage i've seen on youtube, WAR is going to be using this quite a bit. PvP tanks that is. They are also going to have collision. An example of the way they will do this is with abilities that make the opponent cause significantly less damage to anyone other than the tank for X amount of time. They probably could do some damage redirection too.

That is like having a turtle to the extreme. lol.

Next thing you know, you'll be doing the flying wedge (like from Mighty Ducks). lawl.

EDIT - What they could do is give tanks some kind of "bear hug" ability. Basically grab someone and prevent them from attacking or casting, but they can be attacked and healed. Then, the DPS can kill them. The tank should be able to hold onto this character until he/she (i.e. the tank) is killed. Of course, there would have to be a way to break it - like a crit hit, stun, or something. If you are super spec'd, then you can grab 2 people. Like "big pappa bear hug" or something .... :) That would be useful.

Taunt working in PvP is a nice idea, but Bliz has already said they pretty much hate it. Without an ability to force players to attack them tanks are pretty much relegated to the role of flag runner.

Taunt works like that in FFXI's PVP. If you taunt someone in PVP in FFXI it forces them to target you and makes them unable to switch targets for a few seconds. It's nice for saving casters and guarding flags and stuff.

Not that this is at all relevant, but my mage just joined the Turtle club. YAY TURTLE!!!

Also, I think it's BS that taunt doesn't work in PvP, but no doubt there's a bunch of devout PvPers out there who could explain the reasons why it's right the way it is and another group with the exact opposite viewpoint...Either way, imo it sucks.

it works on pets though. kinda neat. So if your healer is getting raped by a pet/demon you can taunt it off them.

a player taunt would not be feasible with the game mechanics, IMO. as it stands now there is only one ability that directly controls a players actions: MC. this ability is equalized by making it a long cast, channelled, rooted, and loss of control of the caster. a taunt would just be amazingly annoying.

i have also juggled the idea of a reverse charge, similar to Shade sucking you in. but this would voilate the pvp law of 'controlling a players movement'. this is also why no players have a knockback ability(save AV snowballs). fear etc work in a way that a player is debuffed and then controlled by the game's mechanics...but never directly by a player.

a good example of this 'law' is pet taunting. you can taunt a player's pet all day long...unless that player is directly controlling the pet(see Hunter's Eye of the Beast).

I didn't know Bliz said they hated PVP taunts, even if it is an evidence in game. I agree it just won't happen anyway, but I would like to know their arguments against taunts... Locking another player's target on you for, let's say, 3 seconds would be really an enormous change in wow PVP, but what about stun lock and other CC that won't let you any game play options other than using the matching anti CC trinket with big cooldown on it?

Not only that, but they were talking about in the interview there that future PvP will allow knockbacks and pull-ins. From what I read there, it wasn't a taunt the DKs would have.. but a "COME OVER HERE" move ala Scorpion. So you can have your rogue buddies right there, pull the healer to you and have them go to town.
