As the subject says, finally dinged 70 this weekend. I am somewhat overwhelmed at the amount of work to do to get myself ready for kara or heroics, still have 1/2 of outland unexplored, etc.

I will spare you the request for an audit of my toon since, frankly, he has so much gear to acquire there's no point yet. I do, however, have three questions that I couldn't easily find the answers to. I apologize if they dwell elsewhere on the forum or Emmerald's list and I missed it:

1) I see all the time people say not to worry too much about socket bonuses. Does that mean I should just gem up everything (mainly my clefthoof set) w solid stars of elune to get my sta up, once I hit the defense cap? The socket bonus on the clefthoof looks nice (I can use +dodge right now) but is it worth it?

2) I'm planning to use the S1 shoulders and headpiece for both tanking and dps, and, of course, pvp. What's the best way to gem 'em? I presume with agi and a meta that has some sta?

3) On a related note, since I have those two pvp pieces (and may get the gloves since it seems the verdant gloves will take aeons to acquire), I have some resilience (something like 80). I know that 415 defense = uncrittable. But I imagine that total drops with resilience. Is there a formula for how much defense you need for uncrittable with x resilence?

Thanks in advance.

Grats on 70... a strange world where progression is no longer measured in levels but by gear, raid bosses, and arena ratings :)

1. Some folks care about socket bonuses, some don't. In the end it doesn't really matter too much AS LONG AS you're socketing the right stats. Stamina (as you mentioned) is good. Agility is as good or better in my opinion - netting you armor, dodge, crit, ap...

I'm one of those semi-**** freaks who can't stand mismatching colors so i use Shifting Nightseyes (Agi, Stam) in my blue sockets and Glinting Noble Topaz (Agi, +Hit) in my yellow sockets. A lil +hit is always nice for tanking, but it's not nearly as essential as yer other mitigation stats.

2. I also use pvp gear in my head and shoulder slots. Just gem em according to the above rules - Agility/Stamina all the way.

3. Uncrittable status - defense and resilience combine towards dereasing yer crittableness. Defense is better because it gives you a little extra dodge, but resilience works just fine. Mouse over the two stats (def, res) on the defenses tab of yer character sheet and the two percentages should add up to 2.6% or greater (assuming you've taken the Survival of the Fittest talent). Over 2.6% and yer mostly wasting gear/stat budget.

Good luck,
-B

edit: There's a thread on the OBoards right now you might find useful - they go into a little more detail about the defense vs. resilience issue -- http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=6286661035&sid=1

I just hit 70 this week and am currently geared for heroics/Kara. This took a bit of preparation and a little help from my guildies but this is a pretty good starting point to work towards. The HP and dodge are off a little because the Armory is stupid and doesn't add/multiply things correctly.

Currently have mid 13k hp
21,726 armor
27.29% dodge
uncrittable

(I'm actually way over uncrittable and will be looking to upgrade a few items to maximize stats. I also have my gloves, bracers and cloak yet to get agility enchants to bump up my dodge/crit/armor)

Everything I am wearing is either crafted gear, pvp or quest rewards. I think I might have a ring that was a drop. Other than that everything I have can be obtained through some AH time, some time having some guildies craft/farming mats for them and doing some quests/pvp. Mainly in SMV for the belt and bracers.

I gemmed mostly for stamina until I was over 13k hp and then went for agility. I also will have the glyph to defense/dodge on my helm after my next Durn run to get revered from KoT. As you can see, that will give me alot of room above the uncrittable mark to move gear around. Also I'm up for critiques on this gear if anyone wants to throw out some suggestions.

I think you logged out in your dps gear. But I'll keep checking your armory for when you log in tanking gear, I'd like to see how you gemmed and enchanted. I'm actually pretty close to 19k armor and 13k health after three days at 70 w no enchants yet. I still don't have the smv bracers and I need to farm Durn and Ramps for the tanking rings. But my dodge needs help (a measly 18% last I looked).

Also, for some reason I never find heavy clefthoof leggings on AH. The chest and boots, all the time, but after 3 weeks of searching havent found the pants. I may have to either get to Revered w consortium for their blue pants (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=29116;source=live) or farm some clefthoof leather and hire a leatherworker. Both seem unappealing but necessary.

For those of us intimidated at running Arc to get verdant gloves in their first week as a 70...any other good, easily-attainable tanking mitts out there, besides the PvP ones?

I've got so much defense from my tank gear and so much resilience from the few PvP pieces I use while tanking that I could dump Survival of the Fittest and still be crit immune enough for two tanks.

I'm working on getting more armor and dodge rating, though.

If you checked today, then ya, sorry, I did log out in my dps set (which sucks cause I spent so much time on my tanking set LOL)

I normally log out in my tank gear in bear form so that way I'm always available to get checked on the armory and I will make sure I do so again tonight. The big thing about getting the crafted gear is making friends with these people. Find someone on one of your PuG runs or someone a guildy knows that is a leatherworker.

If you become friends with them, 9 times out of 10, they are going to hook you up in one way or another and taaadaaa you are wearing resolute cape(tailor), stylin' purple hat, clefthoof set(both LW) and looking good.

I went for the pvp gloves and shoulders(the shoulders are almost a must) If you don't wanna go earn the honor for the gloves then you can always just pick up the gloves/shoulders blue pvp set from whichever rep vendor has them and use that. It's especially helpful for the resil 2pc bonus for new tanks.

The gloves, shoulders, helm and rings are your base agility usually since heavy clefthoof doesn't have any unless you gem for it. I put the +35 agil on my Braxxis staff of slumber which helps a lot and then after you hit that 13k or so mark on hp I gem with +8 agility gems (+6) if they are overpriced at the time(you can even go with the +agil/+stam gems if they are cheap on your server) and like I said I'm gonna get a few enchants to +agil to the rest of the stuff.

Overall I am very happy with how my tanking gear has shaped up and I am going to start working on getting a little more Agil/stam compared to Def rating/resil since I am way over the cap.

Thanks for the idea on the blue PvP gloves. I'm trying to bank honor for when S2 gear becomes welfare epics, so grabbing those will work well until I manage to finish that epic quest for verdant gloves. (I've got the S1 hat and shoulders already.)

Of course, I need to get to Honored w KOT, and I havent even run any of the instances yet. I need to farm the tanking ring in Durn anyway this weekend, so away I go.

Edit: Guess it's just honored, not revered as I initially feared.

I made sure to log out in my Tanking gear today before I left for work, so you should be able to armory me today and get a good idea of how/what I did to get to where I am.

I tanked Regular Shadow Labs last night and actually had to switch out to my Staff of Natural Fury and change a ring and my boots out to add to my dps/take away from my armor because they didn't hit hard enough and I ended up rage starved a lot.

Anyway Good luck with the gearing up.

Thanks Galen, gave me some new ideas on how to gem and nicely demonstrated why the necklace of the deep is better than the quest reward I'm wearing from Sethekk Halls. First, of course, I need to raise some more cash, as this is my first 70. I think the enchants alone will bankrupt me. I guess that's why God (Blizz) created dailies....
