I've found that even after totems expire (disappear) you are able to use Totemic Call. Problem is, if you do this do you still get the mana back? Or do the totems have to be alive when you Call?

Given that Totemic Call gives mana from destroying totems--that is, a certain amount of mana from each totem you have active at the time, rather than a set amount of mana--I'd have to say no.

Or, if you want to look at it another way--the mana cost of all totems you have active = 0.

0/4 (or 0x25%) = 0.

So, you're getting back 25% of the mana from all of your active totems--it's just that that amount happens to be 0. Make sense?

And yes, it's a bit silly that you can use it with no totems down, but I don't think it has an associated mana cost, so it's not too big an issue. :)

Thanks isyris. Thought maybe since you could still use it, you got the mana. But I should've read it better and used common sense. :D

That's odd, if I have no totems up and I try to use Totemic Call, I get this "whoosh" sound (the Nature spell failure sound) and red letters say "No available target" or something akin to this.

Somestimes I can cast it once with no totems out. But after that it won't cast for a few minutes.

If you totems expire naturally, are timed out, then you can use totemic recall with no error message. I am almost positive that in the combat log it would say something like "used totemic recall for a total of 0 mana" or something along those lines

The easiest way to reproduce what they're talking about is to let your Fire Nova explode. After it's gone you'll still be able to Totemic Recall, but you'll get 0 mana from it.

If you run some of the better combat text mods (Mik's Scrolling Battle Text is what I use) you will be told exactly how much mana you're getting from Totemic Recall. ...or you could just check the combat log which I believe probably says something like "Axehilt has gained 0 mana from Totemic Recall."

Really the closest thing I've come to a "tricky" use of Totemic Recall is to recall Magma totem right before it does it's last pulse, given that it's a fairly high-cost totem. Even that I rarely use, since I'll generally have enough other useful totems out to not want to get rid of all of them.
