I'm a holy pally, been so for most of my wow life, and i'm main healer for my guild in progression runs (meaning ssc tk). I've been dying to try out ret for a while now, but i only just got around to seriously thinking about it. We still run kara for alts and some casual players, so i can get into kara no matter how bad my gear is. But i don't like being carried, so i'm making plans to build a decent set.

Basically, i was thinking of starting out by just getting the crusader's set. I have a pair of epic dps boots and gloves, so that's fine. i have to find a belt and pair of bracers somewhere, plus rings and trinkets. Weapon wise i was thinking of getting Legionfoe, which isn't spectacular but works. Necklace i was thinking the shattered sun necklace for dpsers.

Any thoughts on this? anything i should get instead, anything i should work towards? holy is and always will be my main spec, but i need to get some relaxation once in a while, and ret seems to be the way to go. i'd like to be able to at least not be just ahead of the tank on dps. my guild's retadin consistently comes in 3rd or 4th on metres, and i'd like to do the same some day.

I'd say go in and heal kara on off raid nights. You build up badges which gives you access to a number of very viable ret pieces. Also a couple pieces of gear that will be upgrades that you should be able to roll on.

Save dkp as well in main raid and when no one is going to take it main spec, go for it off. I know that is how our one Pally got World Breaker off of Tidewalker (or was it FL). Personally I managed to get Soul Cleaver off Teron Gorefiend.

It is usually easier to build up a set as holy and then make the switch than it is to just go ret and fight for a spot undergeared.

Thing is my guild doesn't really mind if i go in as ret, we usually have 1 or 2 of our core team dpsers coming which is 1.2k dps each, kind of lets the rest of the raid flounder a bit.

My mind set is that you can farm the gear faster if you go in holy and are not deadweight. Go clear Kara in 2 hour get 22 badges a week, go get 2-3 bosses under timer in ZA, more if you know what you are doing get some more badges and decent dps plate. Go heal Heroic MGT and get the Shard of Contempt. Save yourself the respec costs and keep going in the main raid and build yourself up a set fast. Then come in and impress.

Or you can switch over now and do 600-800 dps tops, respec for main raid, switch back and forth and when it comes time for finding a slot in main raid all people will remember is the hateful kara runs where you drastically underperformed and you will have a ***** of time getting in.

Whatever floats your boat though. There is no right or wrong way to do it.

Ok, there's been a change of plan, instead of gearing up for pve, i've decided to gear for pvp, mostly for arena. What would be the fastest, most efficient way for me to get the gear i need? i was thinking S4 gloves, possibly s3 chest, rest s2, full vind, s2 weapon. Problem is all this will take a heck of a long time to farm. Any thoughts?

Save your honor and arena points, and start farming it. There will be s4 and honor upgrades out shortly, there isn't any point in getting s1 stuff from honor now as s4 should be out relatively soon.
