Ret Gear QuestionsFollow

Just got bck into the game a few days ago and have decided to reroll ret for soloing quests and maybe some pvp down the track.

I have bought some of the Crusader's Scaled Battlegear from various reps (i think HH, CE and KoT) and plan on getting a bit more AP and Hit rating first. Problem is I cant seem to find any readily available trinkets or a good cloak. Auction House seems a little empty in the way of ret types blues. I hear S1 gear is easily attainable. Should I be going for this instead of the above? How easy is it to acquire? Are there rings/trinkets available through S1 gear? How long will it take me to fulfill a dps role in a 5man?

I've checked out the ToJ's Ret Guide but I guess I'm leaning towards some quick filler type gear for now since (sheepish look) I stil have some defense gear equipped in some slots. Also will I get away with my current shoulders or should I go for the crusader ones?

Also I have this equipped:
http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=28367;source=live

but have recently bought:
http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=31291;source=live

I have the sword equipped because frankly I like the look of it over the axe. How much am I gimping myself by doing this?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

P.S. My gear is all equipped at the moment in my armory below

Edit: spelling

The best PvP trinkets still come from PvE. There is a PvP trinket available to benefit every spec type, but's the single most expensive thing you can buy with honor, I believe, and most of the time there are easily comparable or better ones to pick up through instancing. Do a little research on your own time to find the stats you're looking for and then run the required content 'til you get the drop.

The best PvP cloaks are bought with Badges of Justice which you get from running heroics or raids from Kara on. If you really want it you're going to have to build yourself a non-crap PvE set and do some of the harder content in the game.

S1 gear is "easy" enough to acquire in that it's not a random drop so you're guaranteed to get it as long as you put forth the required effort, but it'll still take a considerable grind. Also, S1-2 gear is pretty crappy for Retadins, whereas your S3 is excellent. I would keep the blue bought set since the S1 gear is only a marginal upgrade over it, grind out all the Vindicator gear to compliment it, and then start working on the S3 pieces in the arena, through mercy points if necessary.

Quote:

I'm a very casual player and I can grind out an honor piece in two or three nights.

There are trinkets and rings, and the rings at least are very good, though they lack hit so make sure you can get it elsewhere.

Quite a while if all you have on is mostly PvP gear since most of it is garbage for PvE except for the S3 pieces. Until you get those you're going to have to go out of your way to acquire PvE-oriented gear through all the rep vendors around Outland and good, old fashioned instance runs.

Ret is highly discriminated against because it's naturally inclined to do much poorer DPS than most of the other DPS specs available to other classes. You can't afford to have "filler-type gear" on and expect to be anything more than a filler party member or run any significant PvE content.

See above. You really don't have the luxery of being picky right now. Solo with the sword if you want, but throw the axe on any time you're in a party.

Cheers Gaud. As always your info is straight and to the point. I kind of stumbled on the blues by accident and figured they were an readily available upgrade set so I went with them.
I'll farm some honor for the other pieces I stil need, as well as for a ring.

I'm tossing up with putting my badges (20atm) towards the ret libram or a trinket.
Will my (spaulders) of dementia do for now or am I better off going with the rep blues?

Honestly, I would hold out for the cloak. Like I said, they're the absolute best available for PvP. I tend to prioritize things that I know I won't/can't replace for quite some time, but if the other items are bigger upgrades for you, well... It's a call you'll have to make.

I couldn't tell you off the top of my head, so hopefully someone else in here can come in and give you a hand. Having not played my Pally or subsequently cared about plate DPS gear in quite some time, I'm afraid my knowledge of specific Ret gear is lacking at the moment.

The Spaulders of Dementia are truely a poorly itemized piece of gear.

They have just about equal amounts of Str, Agi, and Stam, and Blizz just decided to throw some defense rating on there for fun.

They're decent tanking shoulders since str does add to block value (minutely) and agi does add to dodge, but for DPS there are much better.

The PVP blue shoulders would probably be better for you for grinding BGs for your S2 set then those Dementia, but keep those around in case you ever decide to go Prot.

Edit: you could also have a pair of Ragesteel Shoulders crafted to grind your BGs in. They are terrible for PVP, but if you ever decide to do PVE as ret they are the best plate DPS shoulders you can get up til T4 or badge gear.

This conversation makes me wonder. With S4 starting soon and S2 being available for honor, will S1 be available at, say, revered reputation with the same factions you can get the PVP blues from?

I'm sure this would be terribly OP, but I personally would love to see it for a few reasons. I could just fill in so many gear gaps in my shaman's 2 PVE DPS sets as well as having a decent starter set for healing with my pally.

Edit: Oh, and filling out my rogue's S1 set for PVP.

I would say the far more likely outcome is that S1 will simply be available for less honor from the honor vendors, much like Veteran's compared to Vidicator's, etc.

I was thinking about this too and whether it could pay to just wait till season 4 before using any honor I have farmed on pvp gear. My spaulders of dementia are from my tanking set and I have thrown the AP aldor glyph on them for now til I find something better

S1 Gear is suppose to disapear when S4 hits. Rep venders will still have the same blue pvp gear. and S1 will go away. much like the pvp gear before S1 also disapeared.

Edit: by disapear i mean, made "unavailable".

Quite so. I would be dumbfounded if they did away with S1 altogether.

They have stated several times they are going to get rid of S1. You get to keep your gear if you already have it, but you can't buy it anymore.

There's a linky to a more recent post of this, but they've mentioned it ever since S4 was being announced and talked about.

not exactly, the S2 skinned PvP gear is available. the set gear that was out along with it, is gone.

im talking about the Blood Red and Black lvl 70 PvP gear. if you know of a place to aquire it, please! let me know! i want that set and im so close to breaking down and buying the lvl 60 pvp gear instead(and wasting 25 badges on the Cloak to go with it!).

I'm not sure about this but is my Level 70 PvP set the black set your talking about Ruen? If so its available through the different factions in Outland. Lower City, Shatar, Honor Hold, CE and KoT. There is a PvP heal set too.

I have found them a good start to my ret set having only acquired a couple of pieces previous to respeccing. I still need to get a couple of trinkets though and probably wont use any expensive enchants till I get a better sword. I'm still using the one from above because I havent had a chance to get my 2H axe skill up yet =(

Is my current setup ok for dps'ing instances? I know soloing is a different case altogether and I cant believe how quick I'm killing the mobs in Quel for the dailies. With a good string of crits there dropping real quick. Record so far is killing one of those naga casters in 9secs!

Sort of related question.

I have my (currently) prot paladin which levelled as holy. I've been collecting a bit of ret gear on the side (800 AP - woot) and was wondering if for questing purposes it would be better to grind in my spell damage gear (1h + shield, with Holy Shield, SoR and Cons to actually kill anything with) or if I should stick on my ret gear for it (currently have Warmaul of Infused Light)?

Having not used a 2-hander since I got to outlands and started stacking spell damage gear I'm really not sure if the auto-attack route would be better than my current 'let mobs beat themselves to death on me' approach.

Personally, i would use your spell dmg gear and a 2h for any 1v1 killing. To take advantage of ret gear, you need the key abilities in the ret tree that actually utilze things like AP and crit. 1h+shield if you are fortunate enough to get some AoE action goin on.

the rep ones are the kinda red D3 skinned pvp gear sets.

before S1 was pushed to honor venders. you could buy sets that the blood knights wear in places like Hala, looks like the epic lvl 60 pvp gear.

ive checked hala vender in nagrand, they only sell lvl 66 pvp pants. real disapointing.

With the arrival of s4, s2 will be available from honor vendors, right?

If so, I am soooo not looking forward to looking like a spikey pink lollipop.

I believe so.

Also, do you look pink? I thought it was colored a bit differently. More of an orange.

The confusion around this topic comes from the fact that for Alliance, the old set (Grand Marshall's) is gold and has a griffin on one shoulder, you're describing the Horde's High Warlord set, which is completely gone.

Now, my question: You can currently buy S1 gear with T4 tokens, is that vendor going away in S4....as in the set is gone for good, or will he stay where he is?

The great thing about it is that once you have it on in full you can call yourself the "Tangerine Terror".
