Well...

Kara doesn't really need an offtank, but if your guild is fresh into then yeah. Basically, there are alot of pulls where cc can't be used, either because of immunity, or quick breaks. So usually what people do is they split mobs among 2 tanks, makes things easier. Attumen the huntsmen is done with 1 person tanking attumen, 1 person tanking midnight, his horse. there aren't many fights that require an OT, but some do. use www.wowiki.com, read up on the boss you're trying to see what strategy you should use.

Generally the way an OT works is this: the MT takes his target(s), CC does their thing, you get whatever is left over. So for a 5 pull let's say the MT takes 2 targets, there's a Shackle, and a trap, now you get the fifth mob to tank.

Also some bosses "require" 2 tanks in which case the MT is in charge of taking initial control of the boss and the OT keeps their aggro high in case whatever special situation the boss has comes into play. Example Moroes in Kara: he will sometimes Gouge the tank and turn his attention to the second highest player on his aggro list, so you need an OT to be building threat to make sure no healer gets targeted by Moroes after his Gouge.

What you actually wind up tanking will change and be determined by whoever is leading the raid and what your MT can handle. For instance if your MT is a well geared Paly you'd probably OT very little except on bosses.

What everyone else said.

And as OT, you also need to be alert to accidental pulls, and keep an eye out for healers. If someone in raid accidentally pulls another group, keep a keen eye towards healers. MT should be doing this as well, but if he's struggling or busy, you might need to step up. A well placed concecrate can save many a healer...

And if you're not going with a pally MT, you'll probably be asked to pull the dancer in the room before Moroes. You don't need to do much, just keep BoSanc, HS, Ret aura and concecrate up all the time. Use exorcism to pull, as it's instant. Pull a little bit down the stairs to make casters follow you.

On a side note: Why are there so many objections when I say I have to pull around a corner? I have no way to silence casters, and pulling round a corner is a sure way of getting them into my concecrate and on me. Are everyone THAT used to warriors and that shield thing they have? /rant=off

Cheers :)

I'll tell you what, those party pulls were an absolute dream with a pally tank, as our mage was able to do her AoE thing and not pull a bit of aggro off of him.

One of my paladin friends came with us as an OT in Kara for the first time a couple of weeks ago (MT was warrior). On a couple of fights I know he struggled a bit with trying to stay second on the threat list, I get the impression it takes some practice.

OT as pally sucks for the most part, as a significant portion of threat comes from holy shield blocks and most of your mana regen is dependant on taking dam/being healed. So if neither of those is happening you need pretty decent spell dam to stay in front of the dps or you'll be oom very quickly and then not able to maintain your agro position. For instance on Moroes you want your tanks to be the 2 highest on threat so that if the MT gets blinded or gouged Moroes doesn't 1shot a dps, but as a pally tank it can be difficult to stay in the #2 spot for the reasons indicated earlier.

OT'ing with your own mob is fine and there are several pulls where you can split up targets, but once you get some gear drops Kara is way easier to MT as pally and you'll never have to use cc again(provided your heals don't suck of course).

thanks for the replys guys, my gear isnt ready for kara so Im Off tanking. I group was very disorganized so we only made it to first boss before disbanding to get reorganized for another day.

lots of good info guys, it wasnt to bad grabbing arrgo from mobs that went after casters. we had a bunch of preist so we would shackle everthing, I would take one mob and MT would take 2 then if anything un-shackled I would grab it.

Need lots of practice and better gear :/ but it was fun while it lasted.

Pally off tanking is a waste in kara on most fights imo (assuming both tanks are reasonably geared) since most bosses favor a pally tank anyway.

Generally you will have one of 4 jobs on each pull. Either:

1. You will be assigned a mob to pull and tank in big pulls.

2. You will be required to hold #2 threat on a mob behind the Main Tank on some kills. Moroes is a prime example as has been mentioned already. Also, the Skeletal Ushers in the first section of the Opera House need to be tanked like this because they freeze the Main Tank and attack #2 on their threat table.

3. You will be responsible to catching (taunting and then tanking) anything that breaks CC and cannot be easily re-captured before it kills anything.

4. Depending on your class you will be assigned to either DPS (Druid tanks are especially good at shifting to DPS, but Warrior work as well) or heal (Paladins or Druids) when you aren't needed.

Gear up a little bit, once you get into Kara I'm sure you'll love the tanking opportunities.
