Defense RatingFollow

Hi, I`m gonna be playing WoW for the first time tomorrow. I`ve played FF11 for about 4 years and gave it up. I was a tank and loved to tank in FF11 and I wish to do the same here. I was going to make a warrior first, then make a paladin next. I was reading some of the stickies and had a few questions.

What exactly is defense rating and defense skill? For all I know they can be the same thing, but from what I read, it lead me to believe they are different.

Secondly, what exactly is crushing blow?

Sorry for the noob questions.

Getting defense rating on gear equates to a certain amount of defense skill depending on your character's level. The higher level you are the more defense rating you need for 1 point of defense skill.

Each point of defense skill will raise you dodge, parry, and block chance by .04% and will lower the chance you will be hit or critically hit by .04%.

At level 70 you need a defense skill of 490 to be uncrittable by any mob currently in the game.

As a tank, your goal will be to get to this magical 490 defense skill number while also garnering enough avoidance (dodge, parry, chance to be missed, and chance to block) to have 102.4% combined avoidance with either Shield Block (warrior) or Holy Shield (paladin) active.

Warriors have a much easier time of achieving this because their Shield Block raises chance to block by 75%. Holy Shield is only 30%. Paladins do have 2 advantages though. It requires less agility for them to get 1% dodge, and their Holy Shield lasts 8 charges (talented) whereas Shield Block only lasts 2 charges.

While achieving these numbers of 490 defense skill and 102.4% combined avoidance you also want to push your armor and health totals as high as possible.

Have fun in WoW and if you have any more questions just post them up.

Also a crushing blow is similar to a critical hit, but is not affected directly by Defense Skill. As noted, a certain Defense Skill can leave you immune to critical hits, but it takes that magic number for avoidance to be immune to a crushing blow, and any time you fall below that magic number, you can still take a crushing blow: these are when Shield Block/Holy Shield are not up, you're attacked from behind (thus can't block), etc.. With critical hits there is no time (that I am aware of) that you can take a critical hit if you have the proper Defense Skill.

The difference is a critical hit is 2x the damage done on a successful attack, while a crushing blow is only 1.5x the damage. Also players cannot preform crushing blows on each other, only mobs can do this.

Heh, I just realized I told him to get 102.4% combined avoidance but didn't tell him why.

Also, in regards to crushing blows, only mobs 3 levels above you can get crushing blows on you. This basically means only raid bosses. Some raid bosses can't achieve crushing blows either.

True. At level 70 only raid bosses can crush, with some exceptions. Leveling though you can get crushed by any mob at least 3 levels higher than you.
