fire to arcane due to threatFollow

I have been in my new guild for about two weeks now. Every tuesday we down gruul and mags

Wed-Thur is SSC. This week we got 4 bosses down in SSC. The reason for my post is to see if others are having the same issue I have been. I joined the guild as 2/48/11. I found I was constantly having to back down due to threat. It didn't seem like I was maximizing my DPS because I had to back off so much. Our Mage officer was spec'd Arcane/Frost. He suggested I try Arcane/Fire until I got rid of my spellfire gear which he had already replaced and then go Arcane/Frost. After I went to Arcane/Fire I saw my threat go way down and my DPS go up. I was concerned about mana consumption, but with the shammy's, shadow priests, and mana gems that was fine.

My question is, was I doing something wrong or is 2/48/11 overpowered for where we are at? My spell rotation is 3Arcane Blast, Arcane Missles, Scorch. I am currently 49/12/0

2/48/11 isn't really overpowered. It is mearly up to the tank to generate enough threat to stay ahead of you. Are you popping trinkets/cds at the start? I would normally wait about 20 seconds or so for the tank to get a headstart.

Your dps went up you say? Very possible if you have 2 pieces of T5.
did your overall damage go up with it? or just your dps.

2/48/11:
-wait for at least 10k threat before start to stack scorch.
-Use Arcane missles when threat is high to lower rate you gain it
-Use invis
-Make sure you have salvation?

Often Being on the top of the damage meters means being watching your agro like a hawk so you are optimizing your dps.
2/48/11 should be fine
If all dps is having threat issues, your tanks may need tweaking, and/or make sure hunters are using Misdirect often as possible.

While an arcane build and a deep fire build(assuming the primary raid builds between the two) have situational advantages, if the tanks can't put out enough threat, the arcane build will always win.

I would, however, advise that you look for another guild if you ever see the tanks put up rends.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not a tank, I thought rends were good for aggro building. They aren't?

Rend is about as useful for aggro as stabbing a boss with your dagger is for DPS. Except that stabbing things with your dagger doesn't use up precious GCD's or rage.

EDIT: If you have a WWS parse (especially on a non-aggro-switching fight, Maulgar, Gruul, Kara, or Tidewalker are good ones), we could probably look at it and see pretty easily whether the MT is building threat the fastest way possible or not.

Pretty much this.

Also: This is not what you want a tank's WWS to look like:
