I'm a little bored at work today. So I figure I will ask something that I'm sometimes curious about. What MMO did everyone play before catching the "WoW virus"? And why did you leave?

For me it's....

Diablo II (if that counts)----------> graphics got outdated
Asherons Call 2 -----------------> Left b/c of constant class nerfs
Lineage 2 --------------------> Pretty game, but really monotonous (heavy grinding)

I got my MMORPG feet wet with Everquest. I played it from the time it came out till 3 years later. I basically got tired of getting nerfed by SOE, conducting do-or-die corpse runs, camping for spawns with a hundred other ninja-looters, going into a dungeon to kill Lady Vox and finding two guilds camping her and overall putting up naively with a lousy (if revolutionary) MMORPG. WoW has opened my eyes to how MMORPG's should have been done. I'm glad Blizzard is eating SOE's lunch right now.

But even so, EQ thought me a lot about raids, guild management, basic MMORPG staples and etc. I also played a paladin for all my 3 years on EQ and that was what nudged me to play one here on WoW.

I dipped into Asheron's Call a little as well, but balked after 2 months because I just couldn't get into it. It had the makings of a good game - if only the graphics and gameplay were better.

I played FFXI for about a year before I switched over to WoW.

The same friend who had gotten me into FFXI switched to WoW so I followed suit about 3-4 months after WoW's release.

Eq >>> FFXI/CoH >>> Lineage 2 >>> FFXI >>> WoW

I did CoH as a novelty, FFXI was (is?) my passion, but when my LS broke I joined a bunch of my RL friends in WoW. If my guild ever breaks (unlikely) I'll be back on my WHM in FFXI by the weekend.

Just like yourself i have come from the weird and wonderfull world of Diablo II (and Xpac)
The reason for leaving it isn't even the graphics for me, its just the play style of the game, same acts, same quests and no variance what so ever, every one gets Enigma, and runs Baal over and over cause there isn't anything better to do.
/cry... i miss it sometimes though.

P.S-Also the very limited PvP and Knowing that some people can one shot any one no matter how hard you try.

Me too!

I'm an old fart at 34, and used to play Diablo II. I haven't talked to anyone playing WoW that played it. Nice to see I had company, long live the Necromancer! I just started playing WoW a few months ago after probably 3-4 years not playing MMO's at all. Got stuck in a rut of PS2 gaming.

WoW is my first true MMO. diablo hardly counts. :P

for you diablo fans that got tired of the graphics and 800x600 resolution, check out Titan Quest, and it's expansion. i think you can get the set for 20 bucks. Damn near IDENTICAL to diablo 2, just set in mythological times. Fun game though.

I started in FFXI, the repetition of killing the same mob over and over and over again and spending 8 hours to level was what killed it for me (also LFG for 2 hours to get into the 8hour grind). I was a BLM, yet I can't stand playing a mage in WoW for an extended period of time. Go figure.

Also played CoH, but the quests started getting too repetitive "Oh ANOTHER gang is hanging out somewhere? I guess I'll go take care of that... again"

I played EQ for quite a while, but one day I just got tired of it. Whenever someone complains about grinding in WoW, I laugh and ask them if they ever played EQ. After that I played Galaxies, because I've always been a Star Wars fan. Turns out there was nothing Star Wars about that game. The only thing fun was the people. I just decided one day to give WoW a shot, and I was hooked. WoW is what MMO's ought to be like, I think. 3rd time's a charm, right?

BRD, RNG, SMN, NIN, PLD, WHM, BLM, RDM, and SMN with all compatible subjobs in FFXI lvled to cap. I liked the class mechanics in that game. Hated the 10% TNL death tax for dying. Loved LFG on my BRD (ezmode to 70) Hated REFRASH PLX!!!! Overall i liked FFXI. I go back every now an then since my LS is still around. Its a different game now.

DiabloII for years> Tried: Shadowbane >DiabloII> CoH/V for years> Tried: EQ2, FFXI, Lineage2 > CoH/V> FFXI for a year> WoW about a year now > thinking about trying out a pure PVP mmo: WAR or AoC.

stoped playing DiabloII when i got deployed in the military and bliz deleted my account.

CoH/V is prolly the most fun MMO i have ever played, but the lack of anything to do end game forced me to "move on". i still want to go back to CoH/V but im waiting for enough content updates to make it worth my while.

As of right now my MMO choices are prolly going to be decided by my current guild. i get along with them so well, and they have been migrating from MMO to MMO as sort of a family. Their next game will most likely be Warhammer online.

I forgot about Star Wars Galaxies. I gave that one a shot too for about 6 months. I don't think I even made if off of my starting planet. I was really looking forward to that one too. No wonder I forgot about it considering how underwhelmed I was about it.

Hmmm, going backwards I think it's something like:

WoW<-EVE<-Guild Wars<-EVE<-Anarchy Online<-WoW<-FFXI<-Anarchy Online<-Lineage<-CircleMUD (a few different incarnations). I'm pretty sure there was some Asheron's Call 2 Beta in there, but I can't really remember where...

I'm looking forward to a stint in Age of Conan...

None. ;-) I played D&D & AD&D growing up.... then only played first person shooters. My old D&D DM got me involved with WoW.

Being an old fart myself, I was raised on good old Dungeons & Dragons ( anyone out there remember the little books in the late 70's that were almost impossible to figure out? ). I played Diablo first, grew tired of the constant PKer's, played Diablo 2, wasn't impressed.

FFXI taru drg, left b/c the economy got to the point where you almost HAD to buy gil, plus the fact that unless I had a good 6 hours of uninterrupted playing time, it wasn't wroth signing on.

Dark Ages of Camelot, 50 Necromancer. Then Earth and Beyond, lvl 110 Progen Warrior. Then I beta tested Eve Online for abit, came back to Daoc. Then FFXI PC NA release until about a month or two after the PS2 release (also the forum I got my first 1,000 posts on). Then to World of Warcraft at release. Then I went and played Everquest II until TBC came out. Now back to WoW in a Sunwell guild.

I also have Lotro, VG:SoH, CoH and a number of other MMO's that I played but never to any great extent.

Before I got WoW I thought, "Pay to play a game that you already own, online, with idiot people you've never met: NEVER!!!" But my brother in law got me WoW for Christmas after it was released and I did the free month trial: LOVED IT! I don't mind the fee to play so much, though there are a lot of idiots on there ... Something about being able to hide behind your computer screen and a fake avatar brings out a jerk in a lot of people, though I've met some really nice people too.

So yea, didn't come from any MMO :) I came to WoW from a PS2 baby, oh yea!

I've played most of those but not as seriously as FFXI which i have been playing for 3 years now. I started playing Wow about 3 months ago and am enjoying the change of pace that this game has.

I played Guild Wars for 2 years, great grouping and pvp'ing, but when I reached the end of expansion thee: Nightfall, it became kinda monotone, just mission after mission with stupid AI henchmen to help me -_-'', Went to WoW after I started working at the local computer store, bunch of crazy guys there told me it was a great MMO.

I came over to WoW after 2 years of Guild Wars. Their expansions were rather pointless and, with the introduction of Heroes, I was pretty much just soloing all the missions or running other people through them. It got boring fast.

Lets see...

I started with Ultima Online what... 13 years ago? Played that for 2 or so years, then went to Eq for a grand and wonderful 5 years. After that, started WoW at release date but quit two months over cursing little kids and the Alliance. Bounced around from FFXI, Eq2, back to the "new" (terrible) UO and then Maple Story.. Ended back up at WoW becuase of some RL friends convincing me Horde was rad and that i should play again.. so i did.. and now im happy for now ^_^.

Final Fantasy XI. Eeesh. Played as a Paladin there, and came here and played my first character as a Paladin to level 60. Left FFXI because it took days upon days to get to 30 to unlock the quest for PLD, and then days upon days to level. Sucked to wait hours for a party as well. I really liked the crafting system and AH better, though.

I have never once referred to Paladin as a PLD, though. Go me!
