Kiting in HyjalFollow

Yesterday, I took my first steps into Hyjal.

We were going after Rage Winterchill. I knew that my job was simply to kite a weak mob around to gather up the npc's, then throw in what little damage I could to help with the aoe party. Even though I don't kite enough to be very confident about my skills, I thought I'd do alright.

The problem came when I tried to follow the kite paths described here. I was in charge of the right side path, and could not for the life of me hold aggro off either the aoe'ers or the npc gunmen I had to pull the mob through.

I tried kiting behind the tree down to where Jaina was, then back up into the group. Either the mob would catch up to me and squish me in a few hits, or Jaina & Co. would establish aggro and split our aoe dps into two bunches.

I had slightly more success on the left side getting in range of the riflemen and turning around, but again, I died almost every time from the mob catching up. I think next time I'll try freezing the mob just inside range of the npc's, then running to consecrated ground, so that by the time the mob releases and comes at me, I'll be alright.

Has anyone successfully navigated these troubles and can give me some tips?

My guild doesn't even bother with that. I think our druid tank pulls back his target to engage some of the NPCs that are further back. But we stopped trying to have the hunters kite after our first few attempts to do that just got all of the hunters killed, which in turn put our mages and healers at risk.

The most successful way I've kited here so far has been to park my pet near the mobs you want to kite to, then pop a Misdirect onto my pet, then recall the pet when the mob has aggro'd the NPC's. This way you shouldn't even be touched by the mob.

Thanks :) I hadn't even considered the MD to pet thing, that's great. I'll have to give it a shot next time.

Hmm, MD'ing to pet? Why didnt I think of that. I've done that plenty of times to kite the first boss in Heroic SV. Will have to give that a shot next week.

I use frost traps, concussive shots, and cheetah while kiting. Just remember to switch to monkey or something if the mob catches up to you (somehow they almost always do). I've died a couple times because I was stunned and couldn't FD before getting squashed. And since your running from the mobs and your likely going to be hit from behind, there's a decent chance of getting stunned.

WOW The misdirect idea sounds amazing!!! I'm going to use that next time :D :D

Anyways, first make sure you don't have salvation on. This heavily effects your threat management during the kite.

I mark the mob I'm pulling, hit arcane and an auto shot. Concussive shot then start running. Serpent sting and arcane as it comes up.

When the mob gets near the gunman I use intimidate to stun the mob. As I run through him I wing clip him. Gives you a decent amount of time to get ahead again. Stop and plug a few more shots before running back through the AoE. At that point FD and you're good.

Only issue I see with the MD pulling is a) your pet doesn't gain enough aggro to hold off the NPCs on it's return run. They have huge TPS spikes. b) Your pet makes it back to the AoE part of the pull and dies because it can't shed threat.

It's much easier to just have a tank pull one of the guys over there. Between the time to get there, the loss of aggro to npc's the risk to you, it's just not worth it.

If I'm not mistaken, once the mob aggros onto the NPC's, don't any MPC's that were attacking it run back to the whole group of mobs? I don't pay a lot of attention, most of it's spent watching who's getting attacked and having fun with the Necromancers, but I believe our hunter runs a guy to Jaina and then feigns, helps the NPC's kill it, and then he (along with all the NPC's) run back. I'm much less certain of how we do it in the Horde base, because we tend to run low on AoE and it gets very messy for us >.>

Yup, you kite one mob over to Jaina and the riflemen, so that once that mob is dead, both groups will help you fight, as they give significant DPS.

I find agro'ing the Taurens the hardest because they don't transfer agro to the front mobs when first agro. You have to drag your kited mob back to the front which is usually impossible due to it getting stunned.

I'm gona try the pet agro trick. Maybe if I have the pet run to the AOE the mob will follow and stay outa melee range of the taurens while still pulling agro.

I would not recommend the "MD to your pet" strat.
I normally kite those mobs to Jaina or Thrall (when on Boss 3/4 trash waves) and if I do not fire a lot of shots I lose aggro to one of the NPCs.
Those 3 shots MDed to your pet won't do for half of the kite path before a NPC peels that mob off your pet.

I normally lay a frost trap a little besides the AOE spot, this gives me 3-5 shots on the mob before I run towards Jaina / Thrall. Some Arcanes or Autos while I'm running towards the NPCs helps to keep aggro on me. At Jaina / Thrall I lay another frost trap. This gives me enough time to turn around to run back to the AOE camp.

Aspect of the Cheatah all of the time, and a Concussive shot if the mob is getting too close. Once some NPCs have joined the fight, the mob is slowed a lot, thus you sometimes have to stand still and fire 2-3 shots. Otherwise the NPCs will peel that mob off you.

Kiting is rather easy for Boss 1 and 2, but not mandatory. The extra DPS is not that big.
For Boss 3 and 4 kiting is a bit harder. If you kite a weak mob, it might be dead by the time you come back to the AOE camp, if you kite a stronger mob, you are in bigger trouble if he reaches you :-)
But even if the mob dies before you are back at the camp it was worth it. Then you contributed some 100k damage by kiting that mob.

The only time when kiting becomes obsolete is when the AOE camp finishes the wave before you are back with the kited mob, but this will take some time and most of all gear :-)
