Lvl50 Torn to stay Balance or go FeralFollow

#1 Apr 30 2008 at 1:09 PM Rating: Decent
As the title states, I am currently balance druid at lvl50. I also have tribal leatherworking.

I solo quest/grind mainly so I am looking for a good spec to bring to outlands and beyond. I can also change my tribal leatherworking to elemental as I know that is more feral speced.

1. Basically, which spec is easier to solo/grind with from 50-70?
2. Can balance druids get instance groups easily or would I be better off specing feral to tank/off-tank (outland instances)
3. And if I stay balance or go feral, which faction (aldor/scyer) best suits that spec?

Many thanks for all your info.

Never done balance but I imagine everyone will have a similar answer. Feral is the path of least resistance with druids. There is more gear (esp before OL), grinding is easy (no drinking), and it's easier to find groups because you can tank and heal (though your ability to heal diminishes markedly in OL). Now I believe you'll do better as a healer as balance, but you can't tank. That said, I've seen moonkins tear through mobs in OL and I'm sure it's a perfectly fine solo spec. I'd say, as everyone does, play what you like. You may want to check out feral and if you don't like it, go back to balance.

As for aldor/scryer, I'm a noob on that but I havent seen any radical difference between the two for feral. Don't know on balance.

TY for your response. I don't mind being a caster (although I already have a lvl70 warlock and priest) so feral might be a nice change. I just want to fly through the mobs quickly with little downtime as well as get the best gear possible for my spec.

If I was to change to feral, should I do it now or wait? suggestions

LOL,

Ty for your input. I'll check out the stats for Fenris when I get back home. I think there is always a need for tank/healer so either works I guess.

I'm a restokin build and I have no problems getting PUG's for instances. You either dps or heal. As for leveling, I'd say feral is your best bet. Even though I've never really played feral but the lack of having to drink and spend time casting seems to be faster imo.

Really it just boils down to what do you want to do. Hack n' slash. Or Nuke?

If flying through mobs is the issue, you will be amazed at what you accomplish with the cookie-cutter feral build. I can count on one hand the times I've needed to eat/drink in 69 lvls.

Ty everyone for the input thus far.

As for healing, I would rather not...I have a priest for that job.

As for dps, I like it but I have a hunter and warlock.

As for tank, I have a young warrior and it can be fun...if you have a good healer :)

If I respec, does it cost to respec from tribal leatherworking to elemental?

Can you suggest a good feral build?

Many thanks

Play what you want. I'd rather level slower as balance if it's more fun for me.

This. From here, I'd get 5/5 Furor, 5/5 Naturalist, Omen of Clarity, the last 2 points in Survival of the Fittest, and then Predatory Instincts. This leaves 2 points left for your choice of Intensity, Nature's Grasp, or Primal Tenacity.

I would actually take shredding attacks quite early, since coupled with brutal impact you can get off 2xshred before pounce wears off, or mangle + shred when you get mangle. If you get omen of clarity proc you can even squeeze in yet another shred in wich case your mob is saying its last prayers before it even gets the chance to hit you

Ya, the Shredding Attacks & Omen of Clarity & Brutal Impact combo sounds awesome and would be sweet but I must be the unluckiest man alive as it never really worked for me when I had all three talents so I can't recommended it to people. I eventually dropped Brutal Impact for other stuff anyway.

As a side note, now that I dont have the Brutal Impact I get way more from behind Omen procs.

FYI, the ability to execute the Pounce/Mangle/Shred/Shred opener is only subject to "luck" because you can't see your energy ticks when you're at 100% energy. I recommend that you get an addon that shows the timing of the ticks (I use and like RogueFocus myself) because that'll let you Pounce when your energy is just about to tick, effectively reducing it's cost by 20 and enabling you to squeeze in more attacks, more consistently, before they wake up from your Pounce.

Well, I took the plunge and respeced to feral. I was in un'goro and kept having my spells resisted so thought it was the perfect time. I am in the process of buying some new agility/stamina gear to replace my balance gear. I'll report the outcome after tonights re-attempt in un'goro :)

TY for everyones reply so far. You have really assisted me in this transition.

FYI

I have not yet respeced from tribal leatherworking as I want to make sure it is what I truly want :)

Pick up NI early for soloing, the 20% boost to healing will apply to things like ILotP and HoTs you cast on yourself that are still ticking when you go cat. The extra +healing from Agility is just a bonus.

Also, you want to get OoC, or at least Naturalist, ASAP. A 10% boost to all damage is better than any Feral talent besides Mangle.'

Survival of the Fittest is an important tanking talent once you get close to the level cap and you start working on crit immunity.

Like everyone else has said, Pounce => Mangle => Shred => (Shred) is brutal, and works fairly often if you get an add-on to time your energy ticks.

I might one day try out Balance after I'm 70 for a while but I have so far only ever been Feral. And it really is a blast being so damn powerful and versatile. Certainly I've witnessed moonkins blowing sh*t to pieces and out-dpsing me but Feral has its own perks as well I must say. Really just a matter of what you want to be available for. As Balance you can be a dps or healer. As Feral you can be a dps or tank. Six of one, half a dozen of the other in a way.

Cool post... Damn it though... I'm hanging at 46 clawing my way up... was leveling quite quickly 'til now... Must... get... to outland... Gah!

Okay, lvl 53 now and won't look back to balance (at least for now). I am even going to respec my leatherworking to elemental. I find that feral is much easier to kill things and you don't have to worry about mana etc. As one poster stated, I haven't had to drink/eat anything other than for the purpose of buffing.

Another question if I might, now that I am feral and learning the ropes, what type of gear should I get for both dps and tanking?

What are the top three important stats for each?
DPS = agility/stamina/strength
TANK = stamina/strength/agility

As I said, I am learning and any insight would greatly help.

i tryed feral and didnt like it. but before i did i asked alot of druids in game about stats. most said sta agi atk power. or agi sta str. about the same for both forms. if i remember reading right agi also give atk power in cat so really probaly only need sta agi.once again thats what i was told my feral lasted about an hour before i was back to boomkin. just felt like i was getting rocked too hard didnt like how slow bear killed on multi mobs.

Until you start worrying about things like Hit and Defense (and start seeing gear with extra armor), you generally want:

Cat - Agi > Str > Stam
Bear - Stam > Agi > Str

Excellent,

I will start tailoring my gear for 2 sets. Just installed and am using wardrobe. Love that little addon !!

In the process of respecing my leatherworking as well.

Overall, loving the feral side of life :)

Well, just dinged 57 last night and I have to say, life is easier as a feral druid. I can consistently grind mobs, shift out to heal, shift back to fight.

No, it isn't as easy as my hunter/warlock but it is a nice change. I also changed my leatherworking spec to elemental. BTW, it cost me 50gold to unlearn tribal and then I read that book in Taranis to learn Elemental. I also didn't need to use the 2 breaths of wind, etc (that are normally required to learn elemental). So that was a nice savings.

I have a final question about my spec. I am going full feral and then learning 5/5 improved mark of the wild and 5/5 naturalist and 1/1 for omen of clarity.

The question I have though is this, should I bother with Furor and/or Feral Aggression? I don't think they are useful in pve but I may be wrong.

Advice would be appreciated :)

Furor = YES!!! nice having instant rage/energy, it's very handy in a long/close fight that requires you to shift out and heal.

Feral aggression = not really worth the points spent IMO.

Also, I would not waste points in IMOW either, it's not worth the points either IMO. Just put 'em in Furor/Naturalist/OOC.
