After Kara...?Follow

#1 Apr 29 2008 at 9:55 AM Rating: Decent
K so I'm still in the process of getting my Kara gear, but I was wondering if someone could tell me what kind of spell dmg, crit, etc... I need for Grulls, SSC, TK, Hyjal, and BT? I'm just wondering so I can gear accordingly.

very rough estimates. And this is for single target boss.
Kara: 700-800spldmg 600-700dps.
Grull/mag: 800-900spldmg. 700-800dps
SSC/TK: 900-1000spelldmg. 800-1000dps.
BT/Hyjal: 1000-1200spldmg. 1000-1300dps
make sure you are hit cap. then get.
spelldmg > spellhaste > spellcrit.
*though personally for fire i feel a buffed 30%crit is needed before dumping it for spellhaste*

It's easily doable with the benchmarks Calencia gave. It's actually overshooting the minimum by a bit, but it's easy for a mage to gear up to that level, so why not, hehe.

1300 is fine. It will grow pretty quickly as you pick up BT gear, and you should be able to put out more on some bosses(Shade, for instance), but it's fine.

So how much spellhit do I need? And also, I'm a frosty; Do I need to keep up dps wise with fire? 'Cause that could be tricky...

Ohh and one more question guys :D
How good would you rate the new badge gear, like Tormented Demonsoul Robes and such?

Spell hit cap:
fire-164
Frost- 126
arcane- 88

*those are with elemental precision, or arcane focus*

If you play frost well you can raid through ssc/tk. If you play it real well you can tap into Hyjal and BT.

As for the new badges loot. If spell hit isn't capped i would recommend getting the Ring and boots first then pants. Farm H.MgT for robes, shoulders and main hand. Betweeen the badge loot and H.MgT you can be geared for ssc/tk rather quickly.
If you are frost, i would advice stacking like this.
Hit > haste > dmg > crit
also, once you are hit capped, you dont need to keep stacking hit. You can never get better than 99% chance to hit a target.

If you can stand to PvP, I'd like to add in that going for a season 2 mainhand(Season 3 would be better if you can get the rating) would probably make sense as well.

Otherwise, I totally agree on the order. Though eventually you may want to replace the Heroic MgT robe with a badge one.

What kind of dmg do I need to be spamming (without crits) for the higher end stuff, like BT? My specc is 10/0/51 if that helps. Also, is spell hste really that essentiel? Cause I've got NONE on any of my gear right now, and I raid Kara every weekend. If so, could someone reccomend some gear I could get?

Thanks

spellhaste gear is only available in T6-equivalent raids (BT/MH+SW) and Badge rewards. It comes out that Haste ~~ Spelldmg when you can stack a bit of it.

I never really see a frost mage in BT (minus for the Illidan fight) because it does significantly less dps than a deep fire mage. But I would shoot for similar numbers of 1100+ frost/fire damage unbuffed.

ZA has plenty of Haste loot. You can usualy down a boss or two with kara/grull gear. To take advantage of ZA however you need a group geared in t5/t6 for the chests. I looted up mostly on ZA and Badges.

Spell haste worked for me as frost, its new and can be hard to accept but for frost imo its the best thing to shoot for. here's a rough guess of what im at as frost. *126 is frost hit cap,but i raid with ele shammy so i dont use all my hit gear*
1085spldmg
115spell hit *raid with shammy, replaced a little +hit gear*
20%crit *rough estimate, i crit 25-30% with winterchill up*
228spell haste *14% increased cast speed*
Average 1200dps. SSC/TK ez mode. Hyjal and BT doable.

what does this mean?

When I said spamming I meant like with my frostbolts (cause that's what I'm always nuking with). I've also been thinking of respeccing to Arcane, as you get major spell dmg and int...How effective do you think I'd be in raids?

unless you have a good amount of mana regen (spriest etc) and 2x T5 it isn't worth it.

If you have 2pc T5, there's a very effective, low threat method to DPSing using Arcane and frostbolts. The idea(as I remember reading it) is that you need enough mana regen with Mage Armor and Arcane Meditation that spamming frostbolts costs less mana than you are regaining per cast(you will almost definitely need a shadow priest for this). From there, you spam Arcane Blast until you're low on mana(using a gem and a pot early), then pop Evoc and do it again. Then, when low, you cast frostbolts until you have enough mana for another decent sustained spam, or a potion/gem timer comes up.

For that to work, you spec a fairly standard 40/0/21. It has the theoretical potential to do as much DPS as 2/48/11. I've seen it work. The guy in my guild running it routinely does almost as much damage as me on bosses(occasionally more) and utterly destroys me on trash mobs(no imp scorch up for long periods means I do a lot less damage).

The kicker here is that now you actually need to stack a fair bit of spirit. Which isn't too hard if you focus on getting your tier gear, which is loaded with the stuff.

Now, on to your other question about how hard your frostbolts need to be hitting...well, I really can't tell you. A lot of factors will come into play here, and you may acheive the same overall DPS at a lower damage per frostbolt than someone else does because you have more crit or haste than they do. Just follow what CalenciaBlue suggested as far as spell damage/DPS and you'll be fine.

Ok lol...NOW I'm thinking of respeccing to fire :P

I could get the spellfire stuff together pretty quick, but was wondering how far it will take me (like is there better gear in Kara, etc...). Heh sorry for all the changes guys

For raw spell damage, there isn't anything better until T6 content. I have T5 but i'm still not replacing my spellfire except for bosses where i need stamina (I'm not using an AB build)
