why affliction for lvlFollow

#1 Apr 28 2008 at 11:53 AM Rating: Decent
I understand that going affliction for leveling is more mana efficient but I still don't get why you would want to go affliction. wouldn't you want something that does dps rather than dot, I mean I could see why you'd go affliction if you could stack all the curses but you can only have one up at a time.
could someone please clear this up a little bit better for me please.

The best part of lvling as affliction is by the time you've finished with a mob you are back to 100% readiness for the next one. You never have to wait to eat or drink...and your void might only need to consume a few shadows before heading out again. That's the whole point in lvling affliction.

To address your curse question, its not your curses you really want to stack anyway. you can stack CoA, corruption, SL, immolate, have shadow embrace proc, and be draining life...that's more than enough debuff and dmg for any single mob. It's just a whole lot easier and quicker than lvling as destro...although I have not tried lvl as demo.

Leveling as affliction means you have 0 down time. I have leveled a pally & mage to 70 as well. The warlock was *by far* the easiest. I don't care if they're melee mobs, casters, w/e. I did get a G15 keyboard and macro'ed my opening spell sequence, but had to stop doing that because I was falling asleep while grinding from 41-42. LOL.

few simple reasons
1. suppresion: 2-3 points in this allows for easy leveling of mobs 2-3 levels above you without to much issue with resists, so more exp

2. multiple talents from the starting tiers that directly increase damage delt / health gained

3. decreased chance to get interupted while channeling spells

4. ability to kite, dot and tank mulitple mobs at the same time

5. improved drain soul: rank.1 drain soul used just as a mob is about to die will lead to a near infinite supply of soulshards and a near constantly full mana supply due to the proc

6. once you have dark-pact. mixed with the imp (or voidwalker depending on opposing mobs), lifetap, drain life and imp.drain soul, you can easily take on 5+ mobs of +2 levels and come out with over 80% health and mana at the end.

I've been away from the game since before BC, I started back about 1-2 months ago. I used to level Affliction, but when I came back someone told me to level in Outland with Demo instead of Affliction. By reading what people are saying here though it seems Affliction is still the way to go?

Either are viable, Wolf. It's all about preferred game style and enjoyment when choosing between Demo and Aff. I have tried both and prefer Demo. I still come out with 0 down time and in more than one piece from battles with 3-6 mobs.

Try em both, see what you like.

I do have fun with Demo, but I have noticed I miss a lot of my Aff stuff. I seem to have more downtime then I remember, but very well could be from knowing what I was doing with Aff and not so much with Demo and the FelGuard.

From what I was told by a few others though, I was under the assumption that Aff was horrible in Outlands. Since I had no idea what was involved in BC and Outlands, I went Demo. Going back to try Aff tonight.

The key to leveling affliction and eliminating downtime is the synergy between Lafe Tap and Drain Life. If you improve both of these talents they will return more than they cost and scale up rather nicely. You can kill faster with Destro, but you also have to stop and drink at times. If you use your shadow DoTs and finish your mob off with Drain life you will have a nearly endless supply of life to tap. The only food you'll really need is to fill up after an untimely death. This will kill slightly slower than SBing a mob down, but lasting a bit longer just gives you back more life and you can move immediately to the next mob. Demo can work almost as well but you miss the improved LT and DL talents. The reason Destro is slower overall is because with all your improved burst damage you use SBs more often than Life Drain and that breaks the Synergisic affects of your skills, leaving your butt on the ground drinking quite often. While I love SBs damage, I rarely use it grinding due to the nonrecovering life and mana loss. There are many posts showing what is seen as the best cast order for affliction mana efficiency, but the truth is many cast orders work well due to the increased returns once you have DL and LT improved. I've never had the need to use the improved Drain Soul trick due to the stacking efficiency gains. One problem I've actually run into is having mobs die too fast and not getting enough life drained off them. So I just drop one less DoT so my DL can tick longer. Talents like Fel Concentration, Siphon Life and Dark Pact just continue to increase this efficiency.

I also switched to Demo once I hit Outlands. But, I chose a 10/41/0 spec so I could still keep my my mana efficiency up. I would not however suggest investing in multiple talent trees before level 51 though. That, in my opinion, is why affliction is the strongest leveling build and why I chose it.

I hope this helps.

Using the spec you enjoy playing the most will usually help you to level faster than using whichever one an internet forum suggests.

But if you enjoy them both, I found Affliction was better for grinding (can take down multiple mobs easier) but Felguard was insane for questing. It really is like having your own Warrior. Except he doesn't whine about repair bills. :)

Dot are dps, they just spread the damage over time, giving you chance to drain back life and tap, reducing down time, aka its way more efficient than firing off shadow bolts then having to drink between kills.

Yes you can only have one of each curse on a mob at a time, but muliply that up on 2, 3 or 4 mobs and your effective dps is quite high.

Affliction is fine for leveling in Outland. I leveled my lock to 70 as affliction and have now re-rolled a lock on a pvp server with my mates and have gone demo since 50. I prefer demo but I wouldn't say it's easier in Outland than affliction.
