Open to all races...but only certain classes?Follow

A friend of mine told me that you can only "turn your character into a Death Knight", thereby unlocking the ability to make them normally, if the character you do so with is a certain class. So if none of your toons are one of those classes, you'd have to roll something and level it to whatever level to get your Death Knight.

I don't agree with something like this, and I'd love to know where my friend got her info, but there is a degree of logic to it. Does it really make sense that, for example, a mage would suddenly gain the ability to wear plate and wield two-handed swords?

Edit: There are certainly at least two classes that would be able to turn into DKs, if no others; these two classes are given.

Paladins - Arthas. Not to mention all the other bazillion examples.

Warriors - Technically speaking, a warrior is just a swordsman; there's no reason why a swordsman couldn't succumb to darkness and embrace unholy powers. Like DKs and Paladins, Warriors can wear plate, wield two-handed weapons, dps and tank. Like DKs, Warriors can dual-wield.

Although it goes against what I said above with mages, you could say that warlocks would make good candidates as well, since they simply wield another form of unholy magic (demonic, rather than necromantic).

You could also say that Shamans might make good candidates, since they can dual-wield. Also, the whole point of the DK transformation is giving up on one's previous path in life and converting into the service of the Lich King (and subsequently breaking free of his control).

Your friend is an idiot uninformed person.

Edit: Taken from Worldofwarcraft.com (a reliable source)

How will the death knight class fit into the game?
The death knight combines martial prowess with dark, necromantic energies. Players might be familiar with the death knight from previously released Warcraft games -- most recently, in the campaigns for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and the Frozen Throne expansion, the former paladin Arthas became a death knight and wreaked havoc across Azeroth and Northrend before fusing with the spirit of Ner'zhul to become the Lich King. The death knight is the first hero class in World of Warcraft; once certain criteria are met, players will unlock the ability to create a new death knight character, which will begin play at a high experience level. We're currently exploring various options for how the death knight will play and the types of abilities at its disposal, and we'll be revealing more information about this new class as we get further along in development.

The ability to become a Death Knight is not based on race or class.

From what I have gathered from reliable sources, to become a DK you will have to complete a chain quest, which you will be able to solo at 80 and will not force you to do specific dungeons or raids. Any class will be able to unlock a DK.
So, you do the chain quest and you unlock it. You are granted another, seperate character (lvl 50-70, blizz hasn't said what specific lvl) You will still have your old character, but also a new DK. I don't know whether you'll have any choice on it's race, since I personally believe that your DK will be a preset, perhaps new, undead-like race.

btw- Your friends not an idiot, just a moron.

Blizzard's stated that players will not be able to play a new race. They feel that 10 races are enough for right now.

I think they were politely saying, "We're trying not to break the game and lore at the same time by adding friggin Death Knights here, and you want more races!?"

I only said that because death knights (in TFT lore atleast) are undead. They die, Arthas thinks they has skillz, raises them from the dead, and enslaves them.
Maybe the forsaken apothecaries find a way to reverse the scourge plague and free death knights or something, so that a undead gnome turns back into a gnome.

I vaguely remember hearing something about new character skin colours in WoTLK, so it's possible they'll be like less-rotted Forsaken: grey, inhuman skin but still pretty much alive. Death Knights in TFT were mostly only Undead for gameplay reasons (Holy Light in WCIII was usable on Undead Units, for example). The necromancer-style skins from Scholomance are what I envision them looking similar to.

I wonder if when you become a death knight if you would still look like your race. Like a Tauren would still look like a Tauren when it became a death knight.

Arthas still looked human, didn't he?

Yeah that's what I mean, you still look human, but your undead-ish. If you remember in WCIII when you play as Arthas in the undead campaign he's grey and I think he's dead. I remember his soul got stolen but I think Frostmourne also turned him into an undead.
So what I think is going to happen in WotLK is that when you play your DK it's skin color is going to look undead-like, not bones showing like the Forsaken, but a greyish tint like Arthas had.

I think that your question is more like "How should I role-play a Death Knight, no matter if he still is a fresh-faced pink-skinned human?"

Death knight starts at level 55 once you reach or have already reached 55 with a character, available to every class/race, does not take over your character you simply make a new character with which ever race you want and pick a name. There is also no unlock quest, and yes you can make gnome death knights. Frost is the tank spec, unholy is PvP and blood is the PvE DPS spec.

Unfortunetly there is a limit to 1 Death Knight per server as long as you already have a character 55+

I remember seeing a short video clip of a death knight in action over at Blizzard's site. He looked like a regular human. However Blizzard might change that.
