I'm starting a new paladin and I'm a little concerned about which professions I should choose. My main is a mage and I know that with him, leveling tailoring was pretty much a required undertaking. The epic tailoring sets are really fantastic and last for some time at level 70. I was wondering if blacksmithing is the same way for paladins. Does the epic gear made through blacksmithing shine like epic tailoring gear does for mages (and other casters)?

I've really been wanting to level engineering (those flying mounts are my favorite in the game) but I'm not willing to lose out on important gear at 70, if it is indeed that important, for the sake of a mount.

Thanks in advance for any info/advice you can give me. (I'm looking forward to this!)

I think it really depends on what spec you will choose. I know there are some very good ret weapons in BS, and some good plate gear as well.

For tanks I haven't seen much (what I've seen is BoE anyways). Same for healers.

I'd not do BS unless I was planning to go Ret. Otoh, You never know what they'll do to BS come next expansion...

Cheers :)

To your first question the simple answer is yes and no. You see the problem with Blacksmithing, like tailoring, is usually the gear is a lower level than what you require as your levelling up. Unless you take out time to farm your mats and level up your BSing you will always be a little behind.

At end game there are only a few BoP items that you will go for depending on what spec you plan on going like the epic chest piece(which I believe takes quite some time to get the mats for) or Stormherald (I think) for Ret/Arena DPS spec.

Apart from that depending on what you plan on doing, be that arena, raiding or heroics most of the other pieces of gear sought after by a Paladin are either BoPs in instances or BoE Blacksmithing pieces that can be bought on the AH.

Going engineering will help you with getting the only ranged weapons of value for a paladin as well as giving you the ability to get the really nice healing and tanking goggles/head piece. Apart from the bombs most gear early on in Engineering isn't practical and wont make you any gold.

Thanks for the replies.

In the end, I plan on being a healer, but I certainly don't intend to level that way. In fact, my boyfriend and I are duo'ing together with my paladin and his priest (which he's leveling disc/holy), so for leveling purposes I believe I'll be going retribution spec for the higher DPS.

It sounds as though blacksmithing is not quite what I thought it was, so I guess I'll go ahead and do engineering. It does make me giddy thinking about flying around Nagrand in a helicopter. :)

I wish I'd gone engineering instead of blacksmithing on my paladin (holy for a long time, now prot), I'm still hoping that WotLK will bring something useful in BS for palas.

As a 367 blacksmith, I also recommend NOT taking up smithing. At least for PvE, there's really nothing you can make that's good for holy spec (and to make it worse, I'm armorsmith T.T . I'm keeping it just to see if WotLK brings anything better, but right now engineering or enchanting or alchemy is better.

I'm Holy also. I started with BS. It was terrible. Now I'm enchanting. It's awesome!!!!

I tossed around between Engineering and Enchanting for a while, and settled on enchanting because your ring enchants will never be replaced. The Engineering helm will be replaced.

BUT - until you replace the Engineering helm, it is PHENOMENAL!!!!

Either one is a good choice.

I went the path of the armorsmith on my Holy paly too. It was an insane investment of time and mats. I still remember riding zones for hours at a time in search of iron, mithril, and thorium. I've been an armorsmith for years now and haven't really gotten anything good out of it that I couldn't have just bought at the AH. Limited recipes, expensive materials, low profits, etc. I have alts for the other professions. So I guess I will keep this guy as an armorsmith just in case something good comes along to justify the PITA armorsmithing quest chain.

Well I'm a 375 BS. I havent gotten too much benefit outside of Stormherald and my tanking boots which are BoP. As you get higher through raid progression you can get some nice BoP pieces that you can craft. Stormherald I would say is almost absolutely necessary for a PvP Retadin. Since you are going holy it doesn't really matter unless you like to respec a lot like I do.

I'm giving Blacksmithing a go on my Paly mainly because inflation on Mail and Plate items on my server is enormous. Seems everyone wants to be an enchanter now and no ones making anything. I spot a gap in the market!

I almost went enchanting. But instead just doing the money making combo of Skinning/Mining.At level 70 I might switch over to blacksmithing cause i'll be leveling a war next.Think it will be good profession and will save me some money.:D
