As for saying the same thing - well, there are definitely some common points, but MentalFrog is stuck on the weapon damage range calculations, like *many* others I must say, and probably does not see that:
average weapon damage = (min+max)/2 = DPS*speed
In fact you can use any side of the equation for calculating SS (or any other) damage. All values are given right at the weapon tooltip. But the fact is, that if you "freeze" the DPS value, for example comparing 2 weapons with the same DPS, then it's much easier to look at weapon speed only, than do the (min+max)/2 calculation. Both ways get you the same result.
So if you, for example, compare 2 top-level "blue" weapons, that all have 71.x dps, then the only thing you need to check is the weapon speed. "Slower is better". This is where it is coming from.
What is wrong, is saying that only one of the methods is right, which comes from failing to understand the other method. And, if you don't understand things like weapon speed and DPS, there is really not much future in rogue theorycrafting.
One method? All you're doing is complicating the formula. Your formula works because you're solving for z, or the weapon's damage. It is the plain and simple fact that increasing z increases your special attack damage. Why? Because it's in the formula. Speed never is. Ever heard of simplifying?
z = x*y
x = z/y
y = z/x
x = (x*y)/y
y = (x*y)/x
z = ((x*y)/y)*((x*y)/x)
z = (((x*y)/y)*((x*y)/x))/((x*y)/x)*((((x*y)/y)*((x*y)/x))/((x*y)/y))
Yeah, it's a bit exaggerated.
If the weapon's damage information wasn't in the tooltip you'd have to use your formula to obtain the weapon damage. However people still saying take a slower weapon would still be false.
Two swords:
75 dmg w/ 2.6 sec = 28.8 dps
80 dmg w/ 2.5 sec = 32 dps
A difference of about 5 dps is very reasonable. If people went around saying if two weapons are the same dps the slower one is better, that would be correct. However if you looked at the damage it would work in all cases for special attacks. An example of 2 swords with a 10-20 dps difference with the same results was a good example of this.
Every single time I hear someone say take the weapon because it's slower. It's false.
