Take whichever sword/fist has the highest top end hit value and that us usually going to be the sword/fist you want. If that happens to be a slow one, good for you, if its a not as slow one, good for you.

Average damage.

I understood that, I just didn't understand what you were laughing about.

I've never claimed that average damage wasn't important when looking at a weapon.

MentalFrog is simply arguing semantics, and he's right.
You're all on the same page, but he claims you guys are reading it upside down.

The conventional wisdom that's spread around is based on the indirect result of the real truth. Slower weapons go in the main hand isn't what we should be saying. Between weapons of the same DPS, weapons with higher average damage per hit go in the main hand is what we should be spouting around.

It's not semantics. There's quite a difference between average damage and high end damage.

To me its like saying I want to get epix. Its not the fact that an item is epic quality that makes it good, it the stats, but everyone knows what you mean. Its shorthand, like most of language is.

Just to say:

I already knew average damage is what I'm looking for, but I just generally translated it to being a slower weapon. I was under the impression everyone did? /shrug

Still, nothing here has helped solve my problem really (other than the PvP suggestion which I really don't have time for.... trying to keep up with 3 other RL friends).

So, deal with what I have until mara sword?

Behold! The power of the interwebinatrix:
I've spend too much time here than I care to consider.

In my late 30s I think I was sporting the Vanquishers and the Rapier. But memory's only good for killing with beer. So...

Good luck!

*edit: Thrash Blade (..."the Mara sword"...) is so very, very awesome at the level. Shoot for that as soon as you can.

Except that while almost everyone who plays the game knows the ranking of item quality by color, there are plenty of people who don't realize what this weapon speed shorthand really means. It's not of the same magnitude of obviousness and you might get people who throw away an upgrade when looking mainly at weapon speed.

Sinister Strike formula:
(Attack Power / 14) * Normalized Weapon Speed + Weapon Damage + 98 = Damage

Sword normalized speed is 2.4. Nowhere is the weapons dps or speed taking into the formula.

Average weapon damage = DSP * weapon speed

I hope now you see how it gets into the formula.
(nobody in real life should be looking at actual weapon damage range. It's pointless. We look at averages)

Lol no. If you fit that into the formula, changing the weapon speed would change the Sinister Strike damage...

Mathematically that might seem correct (it isn't), but as we all know the weapon speed itself is irrelevant for the Sinister Strike damage. Your error is caused by confusing damage with average damage.

Correct would be to use [Average weapon damage = (Low end damage + Top end damage) / 2] in the formula, if you want to calculate the average Sinister Strike Damage.

Lol yes. That is the whole point of this discussion.
If you change weapon speed and not change the DPS, the weapon damage changes, and also SS damage changes.
That is where "slower is better" term comes from. We just silently assume that we are talking about weapons with similar (or ideally identical) DPS when saying that (at least those who know what they are talking about. some in fact don't)

Btw, your formula for average weapon damage is also good. They are equivalent.

Mental Prik and Wyt are all saying the same thing. Why all the hate?
#46 May 06 2008 at 2:06 PM Rating: Excellent
They're not saying the same thing.

If you have a weapon with 128-239 damage, 2.2 speed, you end up with 83.5 dps. Change the speed to 2.7, but leave the damage untouched, and it drops to 68 dps. DPS is a calculated statistic for weighting, not a variable used in the calculation as wyt claims.

Weapons are balanced based around that DPS rating; all weapons of a similar iLv will be of similar DPS, but will have varying damage and speeds to balance out this DPS figure. But normalized instant attacks use the average damage figure exclusively in their calculations, so the only relevant statistic on that weapon is that 128-239.

Ergo, generally, a slower weapon will have the higher average damage you're looking for, and will thus be superior. But not every time. So looking at the speed of the weapon is an exercise in futility.

Are you trying to emulate Theophany? I think you are not there yet...

As for saying the same thing - well, there are definitely some common points, but MentalFrog is stuck on the weapon damage range calculations, like *many* others I must say, and probably does not see that:
average weapon damage = (min+max)/2 = DPS*speed
In fact you can use any side of the equation for calculating SS (or any other) damage. All values are given right at the weapon tooltip. But the fact is, that if you "freeze" the DPS value, for example comparing 2 weapons with the same DPS, then it's much easier to look at weapon speed only, than do the (min+max)/2 calculation. Both ways get you the same result.
So if you, for example, compare 2 top-level "blue" weapons, that all have 71.x dps, then the only thing you need to check is the weapon speed. "Slower is better". This is where it is coming from.

What is wrong, is saying that only one of the methods is right, which comes from failing to understand the other method. And, if you don't understand things like weapon speed and DPS, there is really not much future in rogue theorycrafting.
