So my pet's spec is in a limbo....Follow

I have absolutely no clue what to do here. (Yes, I read the FAQ; No this is not my melee hunter :) Anyway, I am going to tame a carrion bird that will mainly be used for solo pve. I want it to be able to hold agro to some extent, but don't want it to fail at DPS too badly. I have to choose between Claw and Bite. Bite does more damage, but claw costs less so I can use Screech more often. What are your thoughts?

Tame a boar.

okay. Expected answer aside...

1. What is your spec? Are you Beastmastery, or do you at least have 2/2 Go For the Throat?

2. If you absolutely want the aesthetic of a Carrion Bird, try out an Owl. It does so much more base DPS than a Carrion Bird that you won't even have to worry about a secondary damage skill- BUT if you want to take it along for an instance or even a raid, you can teach it Claw, and it'll do a really nice amount of damage while offering your Tank a debuff on everything around it.

I recently tamed an Owl to take to Hyjal, and I fell in love with how much better it holds aggro than my beloved ravager, Molly- whom I still use for all other raids.

SV and MM will work with any pet, however...... BM/MM is best for the focus dump abilities. For your carrion bird, or owl, or bat the talents in GftT and Beastial Discipline really shine.

I would get and use:
-Dive
-Growl
-Screech
-Bite

This will allow your pet to use screech almost non stop, thus holding the most aoe threat, and doing decent damage. Carrion Birds have more base armor than the other flying pets, so they work a little better for surviving multiple mobs. No pet, save maybe a spore bat, will fail at DPS. Cat/Ravager/Raptor are higher than the others by a little.

If this pet is for solo PvE then the Carriorn Bird will do just fine. The only place you would really see a big difference in pet DPS is in a raid, compared to one of the dps pets, a long instance run, or a long period of time farming. Yes the carrion bird will do slightly less damage, but it IS NOT A BIG DEAL. get what you like.

Short answer to your question... get Bite over Claw.

The reason I went with the carrion bird is that it has the AoE tanking potentail and also eats fish. I happen to be a decent fisher and don't feel like buying food or grindingnfor meat. I am currently MM spec and low level but once I get go for the throat; I went for... Oh wait; I just realized I screwed up my spec pretty good, but eh; two levels isn't much to grind (or just respec.) well thanks for the responses, and it looks like I'll go for bite :)

That's a good reason. I wish my Ravager and Owl ate fish. :(

I would'nt let a certain food type hold me back from choosing a pet. Whenever you are in a city, just stock up on whatever pet food you need. I keep a 20 stack of clefthoof ribs on hand for my owl, and while fruit/fungus is a little more of a rare drop (depending on where you are farming/xp'n)its not that big of a deal.
But while training loyalty, you will be feeding lots, so that can be a pain.

Also, just because a pet doesnt eat raw fish, doesnt mean that when you cook it they wont eat it. Ravagers eat fish, you just need to cook it first.

I like my carrion bird for PvE and multiples. The extra inherent armor helps it survive the beating. The easy diet helps too. This is the pet I take along when soloing lower level instances or escorting lowbie friends.

As with most PvE pets, you'll want to max out growl, stamina, a focus dump attack skill (claw for a bird/bat) and dive. Usually I spend the rest of the talent points on armor.

However if I'm going to an instance with a particular type of attack, I'll respec for the necessary resistance. When going to Blackrock Depths, I'll respec my bird for fire resistance. For a Scholomance run, I'll respec shadow resistance. Etc. I've found I don't need to respec for maximum resistance. At level 70, when going to 50s instances, the pet already has considerable innate resistance. I find spending about half the points for the necessary resistance and half on armor is a good compromise.
