random questions for a new protFollow

#1 Apr 27 2008 at 9:20 AM Rating: Decent
Just switched my ret to a prot. Damn what a difference...im a 53 and i can pull 4 oranges and still come out alive (albeit quite drained). Anywho, my questions were kinda random. First...i have a fiery mace at about 2.2 swing speed. Since a prots dps is so low...should i be looking to fiery the quickest wep i can so as to proc SoL more often, or is that a per min proc thing (basically will it increase my change to heal faster and more often). Second, can i solo any instances at my level that would net some decent items for me?

Here's the Wowwiki link to Seal of Light. It says that the Seal is based on a PPM system, but the Judgement is on a fixed rate. Makes it interesting because Seal of Light will benefit more with a slow weapon, while Judgement of Light will benefit more with a fast weapon.

2) I would highly doubt you can solo any instance that will give gear for you. You'd be looking at Uldaman I believe as the bare minimum for what would give you gear that won't be replaced by the next green you pick up. As far as what you could solo, I'd think SM - Armory would be the highest level instance you could solo at 53, and that'd be depending on your gear. And if you were well enough equipped to solo SM at 53, you wouldn't be needing gear from there.

Short hand: to solo for gear, you gotta stick to questing/farming.

EDIT: messed up a link, and issue a challenge: see if you can solo instances, and if you can, report back :) Would be interested to see if someone can give proof I am wrong in that regard :D

I agree in most respects... except:

Seal of Light is PPM, but it has a fixed healing range per proc. So I would consider a faster weapon all around.

Seal of Command works better with a slower weapon because slower weapons do more damage per hit, which translates better for SoC. You may hit as many times in a time period with a fast weapon as a slow weapon, but you'd do less extra damage as a result of the base damage differences.

Since Seal of Light will always heals in the same range, healing done by the seal component will always be "the same" (comparable) over a given time period regardless of the speed of the weapon. It is NOT based on your attack damage at all so any weapon will perform in a similar fashion with it. Though yes... it would proc on a higher percentage of swings with a slow weapon, it would still be proccing the same number of times in a given time period, and for the same ammount of healing.

What makes faster better is the Judgement effect, which as you note, is a fixed probability. If there's no net effect on the Seal from weapon speed, and a positive net effect from the Judgement, you'll end up with more healing.

But yea... I agree about the gear. Even if you can obtain some upgrades soling an instance (you might be getting close to soling Cathedral if you have worse than the shield from there) you'd probably be better served just by levelling. You don't need ANY instance gear to level and you just need something reasonably recent to perform well in instances if that's where you get your fun from.

I would like to point out I didn't say a slow weapon would yield a greater effect, only alluding to the fact each swing will have a greater chance to proc the Seal. No disagreement in that point.

Only echoing what was on the wiki, not putting out my own choice here. Personally, I just use whatever the hell I have equipped at the time :]
