Mage is the only class I truely had fun playing the game as. If I were to return to WoW, a mage is what I would play.

When i first got my mage to 70 i was a baby in cloth, i got owned by everything including warriors 0_o i was literally sucky and very bad at pvp, i couldn't kill anything 1vs1 because i simply didn't know how to...

After watching vids, learning how to pvp getting advice from other mages i got the hang of it, and now im much better and can take on most classes including locks D:

The 10 things you will face/have to learn as a mage is:

1) You will face painful times when you hit 70 trying to farm your pvp gear and vindi, but always die in the process simply because of your gear

2) You will think you suck and blame classes being overpowered etc. but then you actually realize its your fault! (this takes a while)

3) You will need to learn when to use certain spells at what time, by watching vids, and learn how to counter abilities from different classes

4) Will need to learn WHEN to use ice block and you pvp trinket (thought this was not important, but it REALLY is when you come to think of it :S )

5)Build your OWN strategies against other classes (sounds stupid...but it works)

6) Learn to not cry when you get melted by a lock or a huntard D:

7) Face painful times in your first arena team

8) Learn to NOT dps in arena alot, but CC more often

9) Make your OWN talent build which YOU think is good (not by just going here and looking for a talent build thread) This helps alot, because making your own doesn't make you regret how many points you put in what etc.

10)Facing against pesky s3 rouges in Isle of Quel danas getting ganked all the time while your trying to earn gold :P ( and learn how to beat them somehow...vids advice from others etc.)

As a mage you have low survivability and have to think of ways to AVOID getting hit, thats our main power, if you master this along with good timing by using trinkets ice block etc. you will own badly...

Hehe, some really good advice here, though I do NOT believe hunters and locks to be the very hardest classes for mages (rogues are IMO).

Mages are a lot of fun to play once you got the hang of it. They can top the damage meter in high-end raids from what I have heard (I'm no raider) but since many fights require you to move, and other classes are better at DPSing while doing so, mages will be in the higher ranks, but not at the top. Mages have reported to be #1 in straight nuking-fights however.

I personally believe that the only reason why mages are not the very best class in PvP is simply cuz its the hardest one to learn and handle. There is nearly a different tactic for every class/specc that you might meet, and that we have soo many useful spells altogether makes it quite hard to pick the right ones and not misclick. I doubt taht any mage-player can consider himself good before he has like 15k honorable kills and maaany duels.

There is nothing but skill and spells between you and you opponent unlike with other classes where they might have much armor/hp or soullink/high or resistances and pets to passivvely win the fight for them.

Thats why I'd say rolling a mage is only real fun if you invest time. Big crits come from gear, which needs time to farm, and PvP-fun comes from skill and gear, which also need time and patience to aquire. All the fun comes from investing as you can see.

The thing about the mage class is that it is a bit harder to play, in my opinion, than some other classes, especially in small group PvP. You have a crapton of abilities -- the key issue is learning to play the class well enough so as to have the presence of mind to put your finger on the right ability at the right time. Now all classes have that, but a mage has a smaller margin for error, and getting to know *all* of your abilities is really a key to playing the class effectively, especially in something like the arena.

The bolded parts are the reason I love you, Gwynhara.

Just another tip here, if your mage is already 70 and you think you just have the urge to re-roll because of pvp and so on, DONT. Re-rolling will just make it worse, you will have to learn a whole new class/level it, and it would be frustrating. Plus if you are just not in for pvp/arena..farm your spellfire set and raid, its just as fun but it requires alot of playtime but no skill IMO.
