I'm a newb, basically. What are some tips and things I should do when I start playing and continue to do etc. to ensure that I end up with a good character and have a good time?

Anything anyone would spew out on this post is already in the sticky. It's an everything you need to know guide. Anything else is well... I guess it's a on situation basis.

Heres one. learn to chain trap early. Don't be like the 70 hunter I ran with this morning that chain trapping hadn't even occured to him.

Focus on the appropriate stats and learn your class well. Everything else will fall into place. :)

Have fun with your hunter, they're a blast.

general advice for the game in general or just for hunters? For the game in general I would advise you to take mining and skinning and just make a truck load of cash so you can buy anything you want. Also find a good group or a guild that you will have fun playing with and hopefully they help you out.

For hunter in general....dunno what to say. Think Dilbert hit the nail on the head.

Try every available class at least up through level 15. That means rolling one each of a priest, paladin, hunter, warlock, warrior, druid, rogue, shaman, mage and playing them all. Give them each a gathering skill and a crafting skill. Get at least one of each type of skill amongst all your toons. Share materials and drops between them. You can only share materials and drops if they are all on the same server and of the same faction.

By level 15 you'll understand each class's basic game play style. Decide which you like best and play those. Make bankers out of the rest. It'll also help greatly on instance runs since you'll have a better understanding of what to expect from your team mates and what you yourself should be doing.

Learn to use ALL your skills (not only auto shoot) and hunt down/tame all rare or spawn pets for your level, it's a lot of fun. Try to tame as a horde Belly grub in Alliance territory while listening to mission impossible music...he he!
