Mage help pleaseFollow

Mage: lvl 59 so-so gear
Me: lvl 58 not quite as good gear all talents in combat
Understand that this is my first character and play an average of 4-6 hours a week. I have not played any other class as of yet.
So my buddy challenges me (his first character also) to a duel and proceeds to stomp me. I don't even get him down 1/4 health. Total ownage. Now, I know I don't really know how to PvP and I am good with that. I know I stink, but am trying to learn how to get better (mostly thru this forum). But even for as bad as I am, I should have been able to wear him down a bit more than that. What I am asking for help from you all is some type of method on how to handle mages. I had a difficult time getting close to him with him spamming is low level AOE thing he does, and then after he broke my stealth I could not get close enough to really do anything to him.
Here is how it went. I stealthed and watched him burn off his AOE thing (forget what it was) and he just kept doing it. I tried to be patient and his mana never got down more than a little bit. So I decide to try to get behind him. He blasts again and breaks my stealth. Well then he freezes me and blinks along with his shield, I hit speed and break through. Then he blasts the crap out of me till I am half down and I hit vanish. After vanish repeat this paragraph.
Before I get blasted from some of you I have been reading these forums but have not found a method to deal with mages. I found for hunters, druid, etc.
If there is a post, please link it. All constructive ideas are greatly appreciated. My current goal is to try to push to 70 and learn the ropes to PvP then.
Thanks in advance to contructive critisism.

Appreciate the advice Theo, but how do I get in close enough to CS him when he is spamming that AOE crap?

It's all in the timing really. Pick your first attack well and stun-lock until Profit "happens".

Like magic.

edit For instance there is a small window of opportunity when a mage is spamming arcane explosion between the cast radius effect and the GCD. If you start running into melee range right at the "apex" of the explosion, then you'll hit the mage a split second before the GCD is up.

Really, it's just practice, practice, practice. Happy clothie hunting!

Or you could wait til they run out of mana.

EDIT: Just read that you tried that. Just be patient.

i hope you have improved sprint.
whats going to happen, if you get the jump on him open with KS (or gouge at lv 62 i think when it has the silence effect on it). hes gonna try to AoE freeze and blink. as soon as he does pop improved sprint. this will break the freeze effect. now run to him and immediately kick his frostbolt, then go to town on him.

One thing to remember is that duels aren't really the same as any "real" PvP for rogues. With a duel, your opponent already knows you're there, so you can run into the cheesy mana-free AoE problem.

In world PvP and BGs, you should almost never encounter that situation, and if you do, you can either bugger off and do something more constructive while the mage effectively takes himself out of the fight, or wait for external factors to force him to stop doing it.

I believe this kind of thing can also be an issue at the start of arena fights, as people try to smoke out the stealthers, but I'm worse than a scrub in arena, so I wouldn't presume to give you advice there.

This. i find if I can't get close enough or if I'm frozen. I'll blind the person. It'll give you a chance to get to them and stun-lock.

lol... if it is his first mage, then he's probably spamming Arcane Explosion, max rank. You could let him do this a few times and then use blind... If you have prep, you could use sprint while stealthed to close in on him with a CS before the next AE as well.

Just want to thank you all for the excellent advice. By reading this forum I have been able to identify my own weaknesses and take steps to improving. Once again, this forum has proven to be nothing short of excellent.
Thanks again.

I play a mage and not a rogue, but find that when I do ae rank 1 spam, blind or sap work quite well to shut me down without revealing the rogue. PS, I hate you all, unless you're on my team.
