Finished Spellfire set, need adviceFollow

#1 Apr 25 2008 at 11:40 AM Rating: Default
I finally completed my Spellfire set. I need some advice on what gems to put in it. I have an uncut Noble Topaz that i can use, otherwise i will have to buy/find what i need. What are the best gems to equip my Spellfire set with. Here is my armory.

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Dragonblight&n=Hurtstopoop

My main goal is to get into Kara and start raiding. I'd also like to start doing Heroic instances. I know my stats are low, I just hit 70 and I'm working on replacing everything.

What i need to know is, what gems should i use, and what stats should i be trying to increase to get ready for raids. I have been working on spell hit and damage. If that is not correct, please let me know.

any advise based on my armory is appreciated

I would suggest some spell hit and damage. You should be around 600+ spell damage and around 100+ hit to start Kara. Run some of the 70 5 mans to dump out a couple of them greens. Get exalted with the Sha'tar for the head enchant and you should be good to go. I would go with a 1H/OH for your weapon over a staff, but thats just my opinion.

Right now gems won't help you that much, but +dam and +spell hit are the ones you should be going for, with +stam/+int if you really need it.

You've got a ways to go before you're ready for Kara though. Run through Normal dungeons (you're not ready for Heroics yet) which will get you items and rep from which you can buy other good pieces. You'll of course need the rep to get your Heroic keys.

Also, finish up every quest you've got left in Outlands (I see you don't have the quest reward helm from Shadowmoon, that will keep you going until you get some Spellstrike).

You could also work on your PvP set, that gear works ok in Kara as long as you're with other well geared people.

It will take time, but you can't rush gearing unless you spend a ton of gold for the good crafted sets (spellstrike, boots / belt of blasting).

In short, once you've gotten rid of all your green items, you'll probably be ready for Heroics and maybe hitch a Kara run or two.

Edit: This is the helm I'm talking about: http://wowhead.com/?item=31104

All you need is Revered with Sha'tar for the glyph you need.

The main hand + offhand will offer more damage, getting the sword from Murmur in Shadow Labs, or the S1 dagger are both fairly easy options for the weapon, while and offhand you can get from a quest in Sethekk Halls or the second boss Mechanar.

Also, if you like PvP you can get some decent upgrades through those pieces until you can get better ones from raids/heroics.

The new 5-man Magisters' Terrace has a few nice upgrades as well on the regular mode, and mages are always in demand for CC in that instance.

You can use the new dailies to get money for the Spellstrike set, or farm the mats. I farmed all the mats for mine and it was kind of a pain.

As for your original question on gemming, don't worry about matching colors to sockets, the bonuses aren't all that great to match. Veiled Noble Topaz will get you plenty of +dmg and +spell hit. For fire you want your crit around 30%, but don't start gemming crit until spell hit cap is close.

In addition to what has been mentioned, consider getting your Scryer and Shattered Sun Offensive reputations up. The neckpiece from the SSO is very nice when you're exalted with the Scryers or Aldor.

And once you have that Sha'tar revered rep as was suggested, get Xi'ri's Gift, a fairly nice trinket that will certainly replace one of the ones you have.

And since craftables are being mentioned, keep an eye out for a Mantle of Nimble Thought pattern. It will not be cheap to craft(nor will the pattern be cheap to buy), but it's a very nice pair of shoulders.

Final piece of advice: Eat more fiber.

Hey, finished my Spellfire set today as well :D

Since there was already a thread about this here, I decided to just add on to here what I need to ask instead of making a new one:

Can someone list some specific gems that would be great to put into this? My friend is a JC and would cut the stuff for me if he has it. I see some people listed certain stats to go for, but are there certain gems that are really good for the kind of stats I should go for? There's 6 sockets total in the set, so what gem should I put in each spot?

Also, can someone tell me what the spell hit cap is? I dunno if I would, but I'd hate to get more than I need...and I think it changes or something depending on your spec? Thanks for any help :P

As fire aim for 164 spell hit to cap.

The gems you will be wanting are Veiled Noble Topaz or Great Dawnstone to boost your spell hit.

Other gems worth noting are Glowing Nightseye and Runed Living Ruby for when you become closer to being spell hit capped.

There are some others for crit, but hopefully you won't need to gem for that.
