Foolish Hybrid Build - level 42Follow

Just hit 42 and have Death Coil.

Would a switch from pure Affliction to something like this be foolish?

I ask because in instances, I find myself taking your advice and spamming Shadowbolts more, and the improved SB, reduced cast time, and Shadowburn thrown in for good measure, looks pretty cool.

Should I skip this and stay the course to Unstable Affliction or give this a whirl?

Your build looks like the bottom half of a good early raider's build, however you're missing out on a very important part of being an Affliction Lock.

Bridging level 40 essentially brings new life into the Affliction Drain-Tank's abilities, and really opens up 5-man gameplay with a key new Spell: Dark Pact.

Keeping your Imp out, phased out with Fire Shield turned off, you have yourself a new steady source of mana.

Your best bet for damage in 5-mans still will be SBolts, yes, but you'll find yourself needing to sit and eat/drink without a source of mana, and unlike organized Raiding, 5-man healers usually don't feel like healing Life Taps.

Having tried a build similar to yours for a while, I will say you'll see better returns off the SBolts you cast, but you wont be able to cast nearly as many of them. Past that, SBolt spam doesn't make a good grinding option in comparison to Drain Tanking, meaning that you'll be gimping your solo play to give a theoretical boost in 5-man damage output which you wont really need - you may infact find yourself pulling too much threat.

Stick with Dark Pact, it's amazing.

Wow, you weren't lying. If you look at my gear now, you'll notice I put the Restore Mana Prime enchant on. I will use this in conjunction with some sagefish delight and continue drain tanking. The battery works!!!!!!!

And speaking of drain-tanking and buffing, which would be better? Using Minor Wizard Oil or Minor Mana Oil?

If I was you I would go with minor wizard oil, the +dam will be a nice bit of help for draining and you most likely won't need the MP5. If mana does end up being a problem I might suggest it but it really shouldn't be a problem.

The combined small boosts in DPS is working VERY well, damage-wise. Drain tanking is actually pretty fun.

If I could farm some ghost mushrooms, I would get someone to make some Shadow Power drinks for me, but wow, those are expensive! Is Maraudon the only place to get them?

You can get ghost mushrooms from Hinterlands, in the Troll Ruins of Jintha Alor, found in and around the caves up in those mountains.

The bigger cave (quest for the egg) has more, however theres a smaller cave for an Alliance quest that has a higher concentration of em - your best bet might be just travelling to and from both, though.

Rare herb, indeed.
