Leveling with BM, my own spec.Follow

#1 Apr 23 2008 at 2:05 PM Rating: Default
Ok so this isn't just about the spec, it's which talents I get at each level, and I wanted to know if I'm making the right choice.

First 5 are in Endurance training,
Then I get 3 in Thick Hide,
Now here, first I thought putting the other 2 in Improved Pet Revive, but then I now figure I will put 2/5 into Improved Aspect of the Hawk,
from 20-24 I put 5/5 in Unleashed Fury,
25-29 I put 5/5 in Ferocity,
Now at 30 I get 1/1 in Intimidation but then the other 4 points at first I thought I would put 1 in Bestial Swiftness, then at 32 and 33 I would get 2/2 in Bestial Discipline and then finally at 34 I would get 1/2 in Mend Pet. But now I'm thinking I will put 1/1 in Bestial Swiftness, then 3 in Improved Aspect of the Hawk to make it 5/5. After getting 5/5 in Frenzy, 1/1 in Bestial Wrath and 3/3 in Catlike Reflexes (I figured 9% extra dodge for my pet is great for it's tanking) I figure I will put 1/2 into Mend Pet at level 44. 2/2 In Mend Pet gives a great increase in the % but what I was thinking is 15% is all you need for each tick, the % doesn't have to be high, maybe I'm wrong. The rest is obvious I get 5/5 in Serpent's Swiftness and then Beast Within.

But please, read the above and comment on anything you think is wrong, or your opinion about it. You might think I disperse my talents in the wrong order, or you might think I got a useless talent or should have gotten another one. I want to know your opinion.

I havn't started playing yet so I'm just figuring out what I'm going to do. Thanks.

EDIT: Also, this spec is for solo, I'm going to be soloing most of the time. So If you think something in there will make me lose agro off my pet often, or something, please tell me. I'm thinking I will just use a cat, unless you think another pet will hold agro better (I think people say boars do) or maybe I need to use a pet family with more armor/hp so it doesn't take heavy damage but I figured the talents Endurance and thick hide etc will be enough so that I don't have to worry about that.

So I'm guessing that no one thinks this order of specing into BM is ineffective. If someone could post once and finalize my assessment that would be greatly appreciated.

I made this post because I read that people are talking about how they can't keep agro on their pet, so I thought; "if my pet won't be able to hold agro, well then there is no point in it having endurance or thick hide." Also, I first was thinking of 2/2 in Mend Pet and now I'm having doubts, pondering why I would need 50%/tick instead of just 15%. I also doubt the use Bestial Swiftness has, and if I should even be getting Improved Aspect of the Hawk, due to the chance of inadvertently pulling agro off my pet.

Aggro problems are when you hit 70. Until then, we'll have to wait and see what it will do to low lvls.

Otherwise, read the stickies and make adjustments according to personal preference. For example, I loved spirit bond while questing, but now it has very little use to me. To each his own, but any questions you have are probably already answered in the sticky.

I'm using my laptop from work (I recently moved, buying a new pc in 2 weeks) at the moment and I can't access alot of sites from it (Trying to keep me working) including pretty much all the talent related links in the sticky and FAQ. I've read all of the stickies. So I just made my own talent spec.

The posts about the pet generating less threat, and pulling aggro from your pet are usually by level 70's with good gear. You shouldn't have to worry about it while levelling.

What you've posted is pretty good, and will get you through without any problems. Just a couple of comments.
- Bestial Swiftness is not that impressive. My original levelling was with it, but I respecced at one point and didn't put it back. Never missed it. Hardly noticed the speed difference.
- In the latest patch, that 15% per tick removal of Dots/debuffs was raised to 25%. I would say it's very important to a levelling BM hunter to get 1 point in there as soon as possible.
- Intimidation is another awesome talent. You shouldn't hold off putting that 1 point in there.
- Improved aspect of the Hawk is a good place to put points to get you to the 3rd tier. It should probably be maxed out. It's arguably more important than Endurance Training, because it increases your personal DPS

Great thanks. I have one question about Bestial Swiftness though, what is it for? Like why would you need 30% more pet speed? Is it so that pets without charge can get to the target faster and save you some time? I really didn't know what it's for but since it was a 1/1 and I figured theres a reason I don't know about so I figured I would put 1 in there.

If you're running through a zone, your pet will keep up to you whether you have cheetah on or not. However, when you send him off to fight, his speed will be 100% whether or not you have cheetah on. The 30% speed increase just gets him to a mob faster. It really isn't that great of a talent, but when I got to that point I tried it out too. If you're running through mobs fast enough(such as greens), it'll help a bit more, although it really isn't worth the talent point in comparison to increased DPS.

Also, catlike reflexes really isn't all that great when you've got a single-click non-channeled button called mend pet. Catlike reflexes is just not worth it.

Also, you've been going on and on about being scared of your pet not being able to keep aggro with the new changes and you skip out on bestial discipline? More focus = quicker growls and more attacks with your pet. More attacks means more crits, which means more frenzys. Also, if you get ferocious inspiration instead of catlike reflexes, more crits = more damage for you, your pet, and whatever group you're in.

Like I said before. READ THE STICKY. There are reasons some talents are better than others, and it isn't a bad thing to be a follower in this case. All the information you need if IN THE STICKIES. Read them, learn them, love them.

Thanks a lot for your help, but could you please stop saying read the stickies, I have read every single sticky. I have even read the stickies for other classes. I've been asking questions and researching and reading for so long I don't know why you would think that I havn't read the stickies. The sticky says that catlike reflexes is great for tanking (9% dodge) so I thought maybe then it's good to get it. And I forget where I read this (maybe Elitist Jerks) but it said that ferocious inspiration is for later on when your raiding or instancing, so it won't help me out as much as if I spent the 3 points into catlike reflexes for more tanking. The hunter sticky just says that it is a good little buff for the group. Also, I was first going to put the 2/2 into Bestial Discipline, then I figured I would put the points into IAotH.

I havn't even played yet so your word makes mine meaningless, so I will listen to you and not get swiftness, and get discipline, and also (however much I may disagree) I'll get ferocious inspiration instead of reflexes. Thanks again. :)

Basically:
Ferocious Inspiration: you and everyone in your party (including your pet) get a 3% bonus to all damage dished out. This tends to be up almost all the time, if your pet is attacking something.
Catlike Reflexes: your pet takes 9% less damage.

One is primarily a group based talent that helps even when soloing. The other is pretty much a solo only talent, it only has any use when your pet is tanking.
Up to you, obviously.
