I solo'd all the way to 70 as frost and enjoyed it very much. I use fire for raiding, but I love using frost for solo play b/c of the control it gives you. There as a lot of group quests you can solo as frost with use of water ele I don't know if you could do as fire.

While your overall damage output might be lower, as I 2-3 shot all mobs as fire, it may take 4-5 shots as frost on some, but they still never get close enough to hit me. Survivability goes up significantly with frost.

Actually, you'd be surprised. Shatter + Frostbite + Ice Shards makes for a pretty reasonable killing speed. Burst damage is still strong in soloing. Where the two really tend to diverge is in raids vs arenas.

But really, just play the one that seems more fun to you. The kill speeds are slightly different, but it's not critically so.

Actually, for leveling and solo'ing, frost is going to do more damage more often because of several different talents in the frost tree. Ice shards, shatter, winter's chill, to name a couple. You will be critting all the time, and your crit damage is going to be insane. Fire is the better raid spec for damage because bosses cant be frozen so you miss out on the extra crit chance and damage from that part of it.

Do whatever you like, however. To each his own.

i lvled most of my way through as fire and switched to frost (i also tried arcane for a bit) but i never realy solo'd i was almost always with my rogue friend and frost is just as good for pve lvling in my opinion I didnt care for arcane and fire was was awsome as well i can say this though (strickly my opinion) frost was sorta boring till i got ice lance once i got this everytime a target was frozen it was like opening a christmas presant lol imp CoC is really nice too. I think both are great for lvling i just didnt have as much fun with frost till i got ice lance.

there is an addon called power aura's (i think) that can give you visual and audio alerts when a target is frozen this helped me a ton

You got to lvl with frost and the Aoe grinding kick butt capabilities. Frost= Fun time. Keep fire for end-game. Why kill 1 when you can kill them all..he he!

I leveled to about the mid 50s as fire because I didn't want to give up the incredible damage I did with combustion, ignite, pyroblast, etc. It is hard to give it up. If my pyroblast got a crit on a same level monster, the damage was insane and all it would take was a fireblast or maybe a fireball to finish. However, people kept saying, "frost frost frost..." and there were places like Searing Gorge/Burning Steppes I wanted to visit that had plenty of fire resistant minions so I made the change reluctantly.

I didn't like the damage drop at first since a frostbolt can't come close to a fully talented fireball in terms of damage(especially with ignite crits). However, having ice barrier, Water Elemental, frostbite, shatter, ice shards, cold snap, you name it, it didn't take long to find that leveling became an absolute breeze(no pun intended).

As frost I do plenty of damage in 5-mans, maybe not as much as I did as fire, but still plenty. Soloing is very easy. Like many others have said, there are several times your enemy will not even reach you, and if they finally do, frost nova and repeat. Did you get a couple adds? Even the score with the Water Elemental. The ice tree just has a lot of things going for it and I'm glad I made the change. Not to mention of course, all those fire resistant monsters I killed in the Burning Steppes as well as the fire immune infernals I killed in Hellfire Penninsula.

Don't worry about your damage. You will do more than enough and you will kill plenty quick enough. I have very limited experience in BG but I know people say ice is the way to go there and it's not hard to imagine why. Ice may not destroy as quick as fire but for reasons already explained, there's many reasons why people choose it to solo.

That all being said, if you're still adamant about leveling as fire and you're
comfortable with it, by all means do so.

Edit: Forgot to mention AoE grinding ;)

lvl solo'ing as a mage.
Fire= mob dead before it gets to you.
Frost= chances great its dead before it gets to you.

Fire has Blast wave and Dragons breath when things go bad.
Frost has ice barrier, Water ele, and icy veins *no interuption is great when 3 or so little mobs beatin on you*

Frost imo though, has the best solo'ing potential.
Slows the mob, which is handy for those that flee.
and has 101 ways to keep heavy hitting mobs/elites at bay.
but again, fire or frost, chances are the mob is dead before it gets to you.
and when solo'ing more than a single mob pull, with either spec tree.
nothing beats opening with pyro/fire/frost bolt, followed by pollymorph on another. By the time the first spell hits the first mob and they agro, one of them is a sheep. Just a little tip i spose if anyone reading doesn't utilize it.

i lvld 1-70 arc/fire. wierd i know but it worked for me. I could easily solo all the zangarmarsh group quests. and never really had problem with survivability

I'm not sure, but I DO know that there should be a space after a period.

Edit: It might help you out some day. :)

I leveled up to 46 as Frost purely by accident; I made a mistake and thought that the mage that introduced me to the class was frost (he was fire....I was such a noob then :) ). Switched over to fire for a few levels, then back to Frost, been it ever since.

Either way is fine to go, while some preach that Frost has better DPM (Damage per Mana), I've found that fire's damage more than makes up for the mana hog that it is.

Bottom line though, I'll take frost for Ice Barrier; it's too valuable a talent not to have for PVE IMO.

I prefer frost as it is a slowdown on mobs , mainly as i tend to be a slow thinker when the going gets tough ,I guess old age creeping up on me , freeze and blink gives me enough time to find my manna potion or heal as well and the quicker cool down on Frost Nova means i can do it again and again .

I guess the hardest choice in frost is if you want to AOE farm mobs as Frostbite i read is not much good for that , but i see it is fun in pvp playing , hehe Warrior comes at you and it procs you then wait a little then freeze him , only tried it once but as i have only reached level 23 it was fun watching him struggle to reach me .
