Prot Pally needs helpFollow

#1 Apr 22 2008 at 5:16 PM Rating: Decent
I just finished Lvling my Tanking Druid to 70 and it was always easy to figure out what gear was best, stack loads of stamina and agility and you can't go wrong.

Now with my 65 Prot Pally I'm struggling to figure out what is the best mix of gear. I was Ret up to 60 but changed after watching some videos of Prot Pallys running instances solo in 3 pulls or less etc, etc.

I have a set of +def gear and a set of +spell damage gear (saying that, I haven't played this toon since 2.4 and some of the gear looks diffrent (stat wise) now!)

But I'm having trouble getting a balance or even what sort of balance I should have. Do I even need +def before lvl 70?

Of all the characters i've leveled this one is the hardest to figure gear out for, it feels like I need everything to be honest.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just keep in mind that when running instances in 3 pulls (usually lower level instances), the Paladins are using a Figurine of the Colossus, which will heal you back to full within 20 seconds when you have more than 20 enemies beating on you.

Defense is good pre-70, but I don't think you NEED to be uncrittable until you hit heroics. Until then, a lot of stamina will be even better. So go with stamina first, in my opinion, then defense, and then avoidance, and then more stamina. At 70, Defense to 490 first, then avoidance to 102.4% (I think), and make sure you keep your stamina high high high.

Now, keep in mind, this will be different if you're in instances to level (as I assume you are) or if you're soloing. Solo, well, you might want to try a faster spec like Retribution, and switch back to Protection at 70. But there are probably some decent AoE-prot places you can find online or maybe in the FAQ.

At around 65, when tanking an instance get as much stam as you can, but try not to dip below 100 or so spell damage. When soloing stack as much spell damage as you can, downrank your consecrate by 1 or 2 ranks, and spam it to take down groups of up to 10 at-level melee mobs.

Once you get to 70 you will have 3 goals.

1. Get to 490 def rating or some combination of defense and resilience that makes you uncrittable. I say combo of defense and resilience because some pallies will use the gladiator's spell damage mace and gladiator's shield wall for the high spell damage on the mace and high armor and stam on the shield.

2. Attain 102.4% combined avoidance with Holy Shield active. Pure avoidance (dodge/parry) is better than block rating, but block rating works in a pinch. Do NOT assume you will have redoubt up to add to your avoidance totals. You do not need 102.4% combined avoidance to tank normal level 70 instances or even heroics. However, if you do not have the 102.4% avoidance the first boss you fight in Karazhan will get lucky with a string of crushing blows and **** your couch so to speak. The Libram of Repentance, which costs 15 Badges of Justice, will give you about 5% more chance to block on top of your holy shield and should be one of your key items to focus on getting.

3. Stack stamina. If you get an item with gem slots that you know you will have for a while, put a Solid Star of Elune (+12 stam) in each gem slot. If it's a temporary hold-over until you get a better piece, put the +9 stam green quality gems in the gem slots. Use the 40 stam/12 agi leg armor patch once you get a nice set of legs (Timewarden's from KoT rep is pretty much the best outside of raids and heroic badge gear) and enchant boots and bracers with Fortitude (12 stam).

Once you are uncrittable, uncrushable, and have 13k or more HP you are probably ready to tank Karazhan.

Good luck in your adventures.
