I'm currently digging through the levels with my first priest ever, now, in contrary to the popular builds I do intent to PvP; and I do intent to do it as Holy.

I will probably entertain myself in some arena, but I usually spend my time in random battlegrounds - just to waste some time mostly.

Now the build I've come up so far with is:

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/priest/talents.html?tal=5050020130000000000000230051332302150531051000000000000000000000

The most notable differences with main stream specs are probably:

Healing Prayers over Mental Agility; mostly due to not having the points to dig up Mental Agility, as I am a real fan of Renew, but I'll definitely love Prayer of Healing. (Did try out with a friend's priest a bit)

Silent Resolve and Martyrdom over the other tier 2 Discipline talents; insert big question mark here, they seemed like better choices to me; but every other priest seems to take improved fortitude?

No Blessed Resilience; now I am just assuming this, you don't see too many PvP priests digging this far into Holy, and it's not so good for PvE. It seemed to have a negative synergy with Blessed Recovery, and since I do intent to load up Resilience it seemed like a better idea to only go with Recovery (since it should proc of resilienced crits, right?).

Any advocations for particular talents would be welcomed, as would any other advice; mind that I really want to stick with Holy and Circle of Healing though. (And I would have loved to have Holy Specialization, but those Meditation points had to come from somewhere, it's too powerful to not take.)

Edit: Is Blessed Recovery really worth it? Just had someone tell me it resets with every crit, making it quite less powerful.

It's a very unusual build for PVP. On the plus side, you get Circle of Healing, instant AOE healing that in theory would let you scoot along while healing your nearby teammates. On the negative side, you've skipped many of the talents that would give your priest a measure of survivability and offensive utility in the battlegrounds and arena.

Blessed Resilience is infinitely better than Blessed Recovery. Blessed Recovery never gives back more than a sliver of your life over a pathetically long time. That said, some PVP priests (including me) put one point it as a dispel buffer--one more thing that might get purged or whatever instead of your Shield, for example. Blessed Resilience, on the other hand, greatly reduces the crit-heavy damage you'll take in many PVP scenarios.

Better still than Blessed Recovery is Focused Will. This talent is a large part of why Discipline builds are so popular for PVP. It reduces all incoming damage, not just crits; it stacks, making it tougher to purge/dispel/arcane shot/devour; it gives a great buff to incoming heals.

Other great reasons to go Discipline are Improved Mana Burn, which makes Priests feared by anything with a blue bar; Focused Power, which makes the Priest's dispels much more reliable and makes Mass Dispel fast enough to use in reaction to bubbles and ice blocks; Reflective Shield, which causes a surprising amount of damage over the course of an arena fight and causes serious pushback issues to anyone using DoTs; and Pain Suppression, a terrific oh-crap button and the best spell in your book you can use on Drek/Van.

Healing Prayers is great for Prayer of Mending, but you won't be using Prayer of Healing effectively in PVP. It's too slow. Also, your party members are likely to be moving out of range or LOS, and experienced opponents are more likely to be focusing your weakest party member than spreading damage among five or more of you. (That's also why Circle of Healing doesn't live up to its potential).

Martyrdom is a must, as you guessed. The other tier 2 discipline talents are largely a matter of taste. I prefer Silent Resolve myself, but can claim no great performance advantage over people who take Improved Fort or Improved Shield.

The builds I would recommend to you would be:

1) up to Focused Power in Discipline, up to Blessed Resilience in Holy.
2) up to Focused Will in Discipline, up to Spiritual Healing in Holy.
3) up to Pain Suppression in Discipline, 17-20 points in Holy.

Note that Spell Warding is an amazing PVP talent--take it over any of the tier 3-4 Holy talents.

I am not sure how well the group healing spells will work in PVP as the members of the group (probably) will not stay close enough to each other. Prayer of Healing is very mana intensive and has a limited range (as I am learning through the Ramparts and Blood Furnace boss fights). I think the Disc/Holy build would work better than a Holy/Disc. Just my opinion.

Also, just spit balling, would Lightwell really get its real usage in pvp, or could it be placed elsewhere.

I'm definitely not an expert though!

I realised that discipline is far more viable; but I tend to play with small groups in the larger battlegrounds (I usually manage to get together 3-5 individuals I've seen before and that have some degree of skill), hence the (supposed) usefulness of Circle of Healing / Holy Nova. (And yes, I'm one of the few that feel Lightwell is semi-useful, for the talent point it should perhaps also give 5% more spirit or something, but the well itself is fair game.)

Seems that the mileage on Recovery that I feared is something you guys find also; it seemed stronger to me since the Resilience one will become less effective when your own resilience increases; whereas recovery will then provide free heals. (Putting 3 points into Resilience and 1 into Recovery seems like a bad choice to me, since the Resilience talent prevents crits from happening altogether, meaning recovery does not proc, right?)

I'll have to do some soulsearching on the Discipline tree-thing, I would still like to attempt to increase the mileage possible with Holy (As I did with other classes, I mostly enjoy the non-mainstream specs) Focusses will is just so deep in the tree :(

Thanks for the tips anyway! Going to give it some more thought!

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Blessed Resilience allows non-critical hits to proc on-crit abilities the same way that ordinary resilience does, i.e. it figures that a certain percentage of the non-crit hits you're taking would have been crits were it not for the BR/resilience, and based on that percentage randomly procs your on-crit abilities. That's why with a 490 resilience I'll see, for example, my Martyrdom proc off a normal hit, but not my Focused Will. They all still proc on actual crits, of course. But even if it does block your Blessed Recovery, you just don't care, believe me. When you get jumped by a Rogue, Blessed Resilience will cut the damage you take by 20% or more, while Blessed Recovery *might* give you back 1% of your health before you drop dead.

My suggestion is simply to try out all the builds we've talked about for 3-4 battlegrounds each. That way you'll find out if you really do enjoy your deep-holy build over one of the healing + survival builds. I think you'll probably find, as many Priests before you have, that PVP is more fun the less time you spend watching the countdown timer in the graveyard.

As emmits said, generally if your group is well-geared, you'll get a lot more mileage out of a disc build.

As holy, you're extremely easy to kill. This is coming from a rogue who makes it his job to destroy as many healers as he can.

Disc makes my job harder, and you gain many more offensive capabilities.

I'd give both disc and holy a shot, but trust me, reflective shield is hilarious.

Killing S3 geared warriors in blues is some of the most fun I've had in WoW.
