Resto-Moonkin - Viable?Follow

Hello,

I have only one Druid character, he is level 24 and Feral. Didn't play on him for ages. He is the highest level druid that I've ever had, so forgive my ignorance when it comes to this class.

I figured out that I'm not too fond of the Feral druid playstyle, and I don't want to be a pure healer, because that's what my paladin is for. I was wondering if "Resto-moonkin" is a viable spec for casual PvP and PvE. I probably won't be raiding with this character, and I might do some heroic instances. For PvP, I will most likely stay with World PvP and Battlegrounds, possibly Arena later.

I figured that a "Resto-Moonkin" talent build would give me some flexibility, making me able to alternate between (off-)healing and DPS. I would prefer not having to take on a "support" role in PvP all the time, since I get paranoid if my solo-PvP tactics consist of boring the enemy off the battlefield.

I've come up with this possible talent build: http://talentcalculator.merciless-gilde.com/?lang=en&show=t&t=282422

Any suggestions? Am I missing out on key talents, are there any talents I should drop in favor of other ones?

P.S. I hope this link works...Wowhead doesn't seem to work where I'm posting from, so I had to look for a different talent build calculator thingie.

Just a quick word;

the build is usually called Restokin. It's great for PvP, when you can take a lot of damage while in Moonkin form, and dish some decent wrath crits when not healing. You get great mana regen from the two talents (forgetting the names, but one gives you mp5 based on your int, and the other provides a % of mana to regen while casting). It is viable, yes, but obviously will fall behind a regular Tree druid in healing in PvE.

For heroics and PvP, I see it as fine. Although in heroics, you might want a second healing class there too, or have you be the off-healer/DPSer.

There are a lot of topics on these boards about it, or just google "Restokin."

My Druid's a Restokin on and off (mostly off since he's got crap gear). It is indeed a fun build, because you can heal and still solo quite well. I have been thinking about going full Tree of Laugh, but the PvP player in me just cries every time I do.

Restokin is amazing in PvP, especially once you get some of the nicer gear. Healing gear now also comes with damage stats and healers decked in epics not only get around 1800 +healing, they also get - from the same gear - around 500-600 +damage. Add a couple of +damage items and you've got a pretty hefty Druid right there.

A Restokin with all the HoTs rolling is basically incapable of dying in 1v1 encounters. And if you find a nice spot, you can keep two Warriors alive long enough to make it hell for the enemy. Nothing says "oh crap" like a Restokin and a Warrior combination, because before you manage to kill the Restokin, the Warrior neatly scattered your organs on the surrounding ground.

I was TOL main healer for a long time, and went restokin to see what would happen. While my HOTS are about 10% weaker, I've gained major mana regen and that ability to do more direct heals without changing forms. So I mostly heal the same way... stack lifebloom and keep rejuv up... and use regrowth or HT for spikes in damage. Nothing nicer than a 9K crit HT when the tank is struggling :).

We can't figure out if I've "lost" anything as a raid healer or not... I used to lead or be second in healing on raids and with the same gear in restokin I either lead or am second. My mana longevity seems as good or better. My healing bonus and MP5 went up of course, but I've lost the HOT bonuses and TOL form that is deep in the resto tree. I also have gained insect swarm, which is a nice spell to keep up on bosses in fights.

My guild has no interest in me respeccing back too TOL, as I am still an effective raid healer.

And I solo MUCH better, which is no surprise.. I've also been able to step in as a DPS for heroics or Kara when needed. In fact, in Kara a few times I've done moonkin for mobs and early bosses, and switched to healer for those bosses that require a third healer. Again, my guild likes the versatility.

I love this build. I'm not too far into the resto tree as you are. But I find myself healing just fine. I was level 55 healing ramps with 60's and 61's, and at that time I had maybe 100 healing.

This build is incredibly versatile which is why I enjoy it so much. When you start healing higher level instances with it and the comments of how you're healing so well come in you'll understand. Plus, you can solo balance with moonkin form. Its win/win imo.

Restokin loses 20% mana efficiency from ToL form, but can gain some of that back with Moonglow. The bonus healing you get from Lunar Guidance is on par with the bonus healing recieved from ToL aura. The difference is, the healing aura benefits all the healers that are healing that target, Lunar Guidance only helps you. You also lose Swiftmend, a good way to insta heal someone in a pinch. At higher amounts of +healing, the missing 20% healing coeff from Empowered Rejuvination will really be noticable.

That being said, you gain a lot for PvP and solo PvE. If you plan on just doing 5-man dungeons/heroics, the difference between the ToL aura and Lunar Guidance is basicly non-existant. The extra mp/5 from Dreamstate makes up for the lost mana efficieny, and at lower levels of +healing, Empowered Rejuv is a lot less noticable.

Ive been trying to figure out if this spec will be worthwhile also. My guild needs healers more than tanks (we have several overgeared tanks for Kara/Za/gruul), but I still need to be able to finish outland quests for all that loot (only quested in 4 of the 7 zones).

All you's guys replies make me think itll be a worthwhile change from my feral spec.

I just dont want to do it for a while and spend all my marks (im at 69 saving them up for 70) on healer gear if it doesnt work that well.

So, thinking I'd start out easy with my, yet again, reborn Restokin, I went to heal a bunch of lowbies in Ramparts. The group setup was an Arms Warrior (tank, atlhough he tanked with a two-hander), two Shadow Priests (dps), a Holy Paladin (support) and me (healer).

Only went below 90% mana once and that was when we were clearing the area inbetween Omor and Nazan. One of the Priests caught aggro and used Psychic Scream, effectively pulling all four or five groups in the area. At one point I slapped on HoTs and tanked four or five mobs myself, simply because the Warrior couldn't pull aggro off of my heals.

Maybe that was a good thing, because I still outleveled him by far and could easily tank a couple of Ramparts mobs.

Was a fun and interesting run, though. I learned a lot about efficiency as I noticed that Lifebloom and Rejuvenation made for very boring, but very efficient healing. Slapping Rejuvenation and Lifebloom x 3 on a target also enabled me to take advantage of the 5sec rule, giving me almost endless mana on regular pulls.

Once the **** hit the fan, though, I found myself thankful of having a support healer. I just couldn't dish out spike healing fast enough to keep them all afloat. Once I got some Lifeblooms and Rejuvenations out there, it helped, but if someone suddenly took two Shadow Bolt crits and a melee hit, they went from 100% to 30% health in one blow. Lifebloom just couldn't follow that.

Here's me.
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Agamaggan&n=Milkros

I'm pretty much full balance, however while leveling/questing/dungeons I've collected healing gear and have about 1300 +heal now, and can main heal every heroic I've done (though had trouble with magisters, but that was mainly due to lack of CC >.< )

Probably not the most healer-friendly build, but just showing that you can be very balance heavy and still heal a lot.

Wow, thanks for all the replies! I was curious if the Moonfury talent (+10% damage for Moonfire, Starfire and Wrath) is a great loss, or if it can easily be made up for with +spelldamage gear. Personally, I'm not very fond of the spell that summons trees, a few times, especially with my warrior, I've seen it do more damage then it did good to the group.

Can you guys dish out some other example talent builds please, just so I can compare them with mine, and see if I've missed out on some sweet talents.

Thanks in advance,

Teodoc (soon-to-be Tauren Restokin)

Here is a build you can actually raid with:

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=0tcr0iIcMuZZxVIocq

You won't come anywhere near a "real" caster in your damage and healing output if you decide to play a hybrid, and as long as you accept that (and your group doesn't have a problem with that either) you can have a lot of fun with this one in just about any situation.

Dreamstate & Intensity, a chance to reach the hit cap for raid bosses, and as many of the Resto talents as picking Dreamstate and Moonkin Form allows.

Balance of Power is completely underrated by most people, for reasons that are just beyond my comprehension. A spell that doesn't hit won't ever crit and thus simply can't proc Nature's Grace. It's as easy as that.

It requires some skill to use in a dungeon, as if it kills something and there's something close enough that's not aggro'd it can occasionally go for them (or get feared) though the trees are smart enough to leave CC'd mobs alone.

In general pve they're a great "oh shi-" button, and are great against casters in pvp, but it really comes down to preferences, that's for sure.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Hell yes.

I'd never specc ToL after I have seen the efficiency and versatility of of restokin / Dreamstate build.

For your build I would say swap out Advanced Natures Grasp 4/4 for the Wrath reduced cast time. Wrath is a Restokin staple and with the reduced cast time you will do more DPS, compared to the one grasp per 5 mins you get with ADV. Nature Grasp. With "control of Nature" you get 100% chance to cast entangle without interruption, so really I would say ADV Nature Grasp was overkill unless you are PVP soloing often.

In the Resto Tree I prefered to take Naturalist over Natures focus to give me a bit more power when in Bear or Cat, and allow me to pop of heals as quick as I can. If I am in an emergency pull and need to heal without interruptions, thats what Barkskin is for.

I also preferred to take Intensity and Natures Swiftness for that emergency last second heal. I sacrificed Subtlety which will cause problems in heroics (when I get there) but with Natures Swiftness I can always top off my health instantly in case S#*% hits the fan.

I would also highly recommend swapping out the Improved Mark of the wild for Furor as you will find having the extra rage when you go in to bear form will really help in those last few seconds when you swap in to bear before getting mangled. I just swapped this myself and with extra druid gear that gives you extra rage/energy you definitely notice things dieing faster.

This is my current build

I highly recommend two gear sets to become a Solo Machine

I'm working towards a similar build as Micros (http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Stormrage&n=Lorendaxxa). Although I really value intensity so put 3 points in it. IMHO it's a staple for balance and resto druids alike. So especially for a hybrid between the two. It keeps the mana coming at all times. As you can see, my build is almost completely balance oriented. So deep indeed that I wouldn't even call it a hybrid/restokin.
Still I manage above expectations (my own for starters ;)) when healing. I only recently took the step to act as main healer in Outland dungeons. I healed in Ramps and Underbog so far without any problems. In the Ramps nobody died and in the Underbog we only wiped once with the endboss. When healing I almost never drop below 80-90% mana, only when dealing with massive damage spikes.
Why bother telling? Because as you can see, my build has almost no talent-support for healing, and if you look at my gear, you can see that only one item is healing-specialized. The rest from the healing bonus as an added bonus from my damage gear :)
This basically means that if you try a real restokin build like the ones mentioned by yourself (OP) and other posts in this thread, you will be nigh unstoppable :)

Ive been playing this build all day and heres what ive seen so far.

- Damage pretty much sucks so have more than 1 person around when trying to kill things.

- 2 guys hitting me? Pshh, you cant do enough damage. Oh you just burst, watch this. NS + HT = Instant 5k health if I dont crit.

- The onlything that stops me is running out of mana in the bgs where Im pretty much constantly casting heals between everyone.

Overall its pretty fun, but Im not sure if Ill stay this or go back to feral cause I dont see being able to solo much with this like I could before.

Small thing, but mob spells and magic effects can't crit, just melee hits/specials. Resilience would pretty much be a required PvE tanking stat, since it's the only way to negate spell crit.

Also, ToL really shines in mana efficiency; restokin has better mana regen. Your most mana-efficient heal is Lifebloom, and you get 20% cheaper LBs in ToL form. The best you can get from a Restokin build is ~18% cheaper HTs, more likely around 12% (no one specs 5/5 in Tranquil Spirit because Improved Rejuv is more healing for fewer points, and at the next tier Gift of Nature is better). The big draws to restokin are: solo utility, mana regen, and making your druid less MAD. (Multiple Ability score Dependant, Restokin can neglect spirit) ToL has better mana efficiecy for long fights, much better healing at higher gear levels (from Empowered Rejuv), and raid utility (a ToL in the tank party gives all the healers on the tank more effective +healing).

I have absolutely no problems whatsoever damage wise. But I am deep into the balance tree. For me, like I said, this is a very viable build both solo and in groups.

As soon as the expansion hits, my first lot of talent points are going into that.

Unless there's new godly balance talents.....

TOtally agree that part of the whole point of a restokin is getting both dreamstate AND intensity.. otherwise you're nerfing a major strength of this build.

That is one of the biggest things I'm looking out for. The new tier in the balance tree. :)
