Quick question about keeping a eye on the sheepFollow

#1 Apr 21 2008 at 6:21 AM Rating: Decent
I've ran a few instances with my just recently dinged 28 Mage (yay). Of course there's no marking and sheeping at that level (not until later lol), but we get an add or something I'll throw a sheep at him. I got a compliment on keeping up on the sheeping last night =)

Anywho, when the mobs get bunched up, or narrow spots where we're fighting... how do you keep a eye on your sheeped mob? If I'm not mistaken there was a add-on that will tell you if your sheep broke.

Last night, I would sheep the mob, dps the main tanked mob, by the time the 1st mob was dead, I'd click target the one I had sheeped to check the timer (which was not accurate... said 10 seconds left, and I watched one break right while I was looking at it). Clicking on the mob that I had sheeped was slowing me dpsing the main tank mob (in those narrow fighting areas I was talking about).

Any suggestions? I've also heard there was a macro that will target a raid marked mob something
/tar moon
/cast sheep

That's prolly not correct, anyone got any good links or sites for a up and coming mage? I checked the stickies, but mainly build stuff.

Thanks guys.

I am pretty sure that I have posted my macro for focus-target sheeping, but if not I will have to see if I can find it.

Basically, assuming you use anything beyond the standard UI bars that has a portrait view, you should be able to see whether or not the portrait is a person or a sheep. (which is what the focus frame is good for), the moment I see it break I hit my sheep macro and am good to go. Cryolysis I believe does announce a sheep breaking though. As does maybe ControlFreak (haven't tried it yet) among others.

Yeah, I use Bulldog or Pitbull, one of those UI frame things with the animated pictures. I was hoping to set it up that I could perm. have the sheep picture in the lower part of my screen while focusing on the dps mob lol. I guess no dice. Kind of a picture in picture thing.

I'll do a search for your macro post, I must have missed it... I just picked up my Mage two nights ago... after a looooooong break from him (was leveling Druid).

quick google search brought me these results:

Target Tracking

This polymorph macro will do the following:

1. Left-Click: Set saved target to current target and sheep it
2. Right-Click: sheep saved target (do not change current focus)
3. Shift-Left-Click: set focus to saved target

/focus [button:1]
/cast [button:1,nomodifier:shift] Polymorph; [target=focus,exists,button:2,nomodifier:shift] Polymorph
/stopmacro [nomodifier:shift]
/target focus

[edit] Target Tracking with Instant Crowd Control Option

This polymorph macro will do the following:

1. Left-Click: Set saved target to current target and sheep it
2. Right-Click: sheep saved target (do not change current focus)
3. Shift-Left-Click (first click): set saved target to focus, cast Presence of Mind
4. Shift-Left-Click (second click): set saved target to focus, sheep it
5. Shift-Right-Click (first click): set focus to saved target, cast Presence of Mind
6. Shift-Right-Click (second click): set focus to saved target, sheep it

/focus [button:1]
/cast [button:1,nomodifier:shift] Polymorph; [target=focus,exists,button:2,nomodifier:shift] Polymorph
/stopmacro [nomodifier:shift]
/target [button:2] focus
/castsequence Presence of Mind, Polymorph

I've messed with other frames, and you can get a 'focus' target to show up in a seperate frame to watch it. You could also get 'sheepwatcher' which is a addon that keeps track of your sheep and will announce who broke it, or if it broke early. But you have to have the macro also, so you can continue to target your current DPS target and sheep the focus.

Awesome, thanks for the non-focus macros. I don't have PoM yet for the 2nd macro, but I'll print this off if/when I mix it up fire/arcane spec.

I'll take a look on Curse for sheepwatcher, or other Mage add-on for that. I'm at work, the question came to mind, instead of waiting until I got home in 7 hours Smiley: cry I'd thought I'd ask.

Thanks again.

Yea, i forget which kind of focus macro i use, but it's hands down the way to go. You can set focus for your sheep, then target the dps target. Definetly pull out the focus screen, or if your responsive to screen flashes go that way. Early sheep breaks happen and its great when you dont need to locate it to resheep it.
Improved my sheep game ten fold.

I use ControlFreak, recommended to me here. It tells you when the sheep is broken as well as warning you when it's about to end naturally. One click re-sheeping.

Well, I just always move my screen to include the sheep and my DPS target.
Every so often, I cast a fireball, click on the sheep, see how much time is left, and click back to my DPS target within the 3 second cast. If the sheep is starting to run out of time, or sometimes even halfway through its duration, I'll resheep.

I also use ControlFreak, courtesy of Allakhazam too. What I like about ControlFreak is not only the one-click ability to sheep and resheep, but the sound that goes off if the sheep is broken. It's a perfect "oh crap, sheep's loose" sound that you can't miss.

Well, naturally. But not everyone can be as cool as I am and have the turtle, so I usually don't mention it. Smiley: wink

As someone said earlier, a lot of raid frames (Xperl for instance) will bring up a separate portrait for any target that you "focus." This is how I've always dealt with sheeping. Before the pull, I find my target, type /focus on it, and just watch it while dps'ing the main target.

Xperl will show you the time remaining on sheep with a very large icon so it is easy to see. 10s and less it actually brings up the numbers in the icon. Since you have a second portrait, it's always easy to find your mob to sheep. Very very convenient in my opinion.
