No more elemental?Follow

Pre-BC, I loved my 0/30/21 for everything, PvP, PvE, I could do the damage and not die often. So, I was reading, preparing to return to the game, and elemental is not so popular, due to resilience?

My gear and build was focused on crit and spell dmg... now what?
Not looking for FOTM, but whats the opinion of number crunchers?

Deep builds tend to scale better with all of the damge that we stack now is the gist of it.

And, assuming PvP(since Resilience was mentioned), Deep Frost(Water Elemental) builds offer a lot more survivability and control of your enemies, so that build is much in vogue, as it were.

While elemental builds can still be used well, they aren't a "for all" build anymore. High end PvE requires you to have the most DPS possible. Frost can still do pretty good and acrane at late end game can be great (depending on group makeup, gear, boss) but now days fire is the top spec for raids.

If your not really into end game raiding and Arena then by all means find a ele build you like. They still shine in BGs and 5v5 (with the right makeup). But yes, resilience has really hurt the builds due to lack of crit damage and lack of crit chance. Sustained damage and survivability are key to pvp.

the empowered talents simply mean that Mages need to specialize. What used to be so great about elementalist spec was that it allowed the Mage to be versatile in its role. Unfortunately, this aspect has been taken over by arcane specs (until an arcane immune boss appears in WotLK perhaps blue dragonflight and all). I respecced after sticking to 10/48/3 for the entire time I was raiding. The guild wanted to learn Alar so I picked up 10/0/51, the spec plays so differently but allows you some toys that is different to the fire mage mentality. I wish there was some way to make an elementalist build work but the empowered talents mean too much in the current context. Any mage who wants to do sustained damage will have to take those talents whether they like it or not.
