Even with the AoE damage cap from 2.2?

I was planning on trying it as soon as I got CoC, but kind of wary now...

Viable yes, but not really worth it with the experience increase in questing if you do it efficiently.

I believe you get CoC at 20 or 22, which in my opinion is too early to do AoE grinding, you won't be able to protect yourself enough, have enough mana, or have enough points invested to better yourself, but you can always give it a shot.

You get CoC at 26. I only know that because I just got it today :P Logged out in town so I haven't had a chance to use it.

So then is the best option from 1-70 Fire spec? Can't see making the switch to Frost being worth it for questing...

I've heard from many people hitting outlands that frost pumps out more damage via shatter on freezable mobs, and fire is better for long fights due to the ticks, generally you won't get anywhere near the full damage potential of fire grinding normal mobs, so frost after about 30 or 40 might be the leveling spec of choice for solid burst numbers.

I'll test this as I level.

I don't have a Mage high enough to put my Smiley: twocents in... but I have seen a frost mage steady farming the inside of those buildings in Netherstorm. He grabbed the whole room and the elite guard thing. Which kind of ticked me off... I was questing in there :/ He did it like 5 times that I've seen. It was pretty amazing.

fire is okay, but I totally prefered frost for questing/leveling because of the frostbite/shatter crits made doing damage beautiful.

Care to throw a suggestion my way of a Frost build that would work well for questing with AoE being used only here and there for the quests with "kill x mobs"? I just hit 20 on my mage and have been going Fire thus far, but it's been about a year since I've played one. Previously, I went fire up until about 35, then switched to Frost for AoE, but that was back when we still had to get Ice Block that way...

Frost is amazing for lvling....With frostbite and shatter u can crit constantly which just destroys.....IMO Aoe grinding is situational, not all mobs are melee and u dont always have the space to pull it off....I occasionally do it but usually its just more mana efficient to just kill one mob at a time and with the shatter crits and all u save even more mana....Fire is good too, but I like the survivability and control frost brings when eveything goes wrong and plus at 40 Ice Barrier which makes lvling even faster and at 50 u can get elemental...

I select playing Mage mostly because of AoE grinding. I combine with questing when possible but after trying all the class, no better feeling than killing x amount of mobs in a pull.
Last night i could feel the disgust by the warrior in duskwood after i round up 5 skeletons and got them down with no sweat.
Aoe is a fun way to lvl, many good grinding area in the game. Killing 1 at the time is for melee, i always look for multiple kills because that’s what mage do best. So YES Frost Mage aoe is still viable.

You can AOE level grind, but I can't see it being efficient relative to the new quests.

As far as AOE farm/grinding - it's extremely viable. Example: In your upper 60s you'll be able to take out several mobs dropping Netherweave - which will help you with tailoring.

As far as leveling this way - it can be done, but with so many more effective ways to lvl - why would you?

I play lvl 52 frost mage. I'll tell you this stick with Fire spec until lvl 40 when you get a solid range of spells then switch over to frost. This is what I did and my leveling went by extreamly fast. Up until 40 you just don't have the correct spells to do 10 mob AoEs. When you do spec Frost do NOT take the talents that freeze targets for the shatter crit, having random mobs frozen greatly seperates targets and decreases your overall damage output.

I for one will be glad when i can get more Frost spells to AoE grind , Not for Exp though but at level 25 with grey mobs i can take out up to 15 just by using Arcane Explosion the only fun i have is running out of manna fast , I am setting up with the pure frost PvP spec eventually (not for PvP but as a bloodelf i will be killing allied at the crossroads ) so i know that Frostbite will make Frost grinding a little more difficult but not impossible , So far i am using all i have just to grind for cloth or greens or skins and at level 25 with a little auction house playing i have made over 300g and got enchanting to a worthwhile level .

I may be mad to spec frost when i use the Arcane Explosion a lot but i do intend to use the frost Spells when i get them to go grinding.

Having seen both Fire Mages and Frost Mages at high level farming in outland i would say the Frost looked far easier and far more fun.

The game is not all about experience gained for levelling but having fun along the way.

With Frost at least i can go ohh!!! s*** and get away easier.
