Tanking Shoulder Piece DilemnaFollow

#1 Apr 18 2008 at 8:08 AM Rating: Good
I am in a bind trying to decide what piece would be best for me to go for in the tanking slot.

Firstly, here is the Armory link:

http://armory.worldofwarcraft.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Gorefiend&n=Ooeeoo

As you can see, I am sporting the Nexus-Guard's Pauldrons at the moment, which is IMO a pretty decent green shoulder piece. From there, I am trying to decide whether to pick up the Warchief's Mantle then Shoulderguards of the Bold, go straight to the Bolds, or skip it altogether. I know the scarcity and importance of shield block value, especially in pre-raid tanking gear, and because I am already at 490+ defense I am wondering if I should pick up either one of the Shoulder pieces mentioned before getting something from a raid or heroic.

I'm leaning towards 'of the Bold', but I'm not really sure why (other than those shoulders took me up to my T4).

The dps ones have better stam (+2), but the Bold have slight more +armor. Basically a wash on that.

I do like the +parry on the mantle tho.

I'd go, Mantle with the scryer/aldor enchant. There, I chose... but it's still bugging me... THANKS OP!!! lol

Either one is not horrible IMO.

warchief's mantle, 2 +12stas, and call it good. dont need bonus, more sta and parry = pure avoidance (though not much) which is great.

edit

i would also recommend scrapping your Dabiri's trinket for something else. make a eng trinket with sta on it for example. You dont need the def or at least wont when you get a few more upgrades, and the block rating is already getting pushed off the attack table completely. Try and find something with sta or pure avoidance, or even the darkmoon card.

But that Dabiri trink is more a pally trinket.

And you can get a cloak of eternity made for you too :) easy upgrade, good sta.

I would go for the S1 Gladiators Plate Shoulders. I dunno how to link but the stats are:

1160 armor
+45 stam
+22 strength
1 Red Gem
1 Yellow Gem
Crit + 23
Res + 19

If you already have the required defense (which you do) then going for these will give u a decent stam and armor boost especially if you gem +12s. Normally I wouldn't consider pvp stuff for tanking, but the shoulders really are the best you can get if you already have the defense (unless of course you need the parry, but you shouldn't).

Also you seem to be gemming for socket bonuses, which are pretty useless most of the time. For example on your shoulders you just got, you socketed to get the bonus of +3 crit rating which you definately don't need, and you would be better off going for 2 +12 stams.

Basically ignore socket bonuses unless the extra bonus is what you need to get your gear up to scratch, otherwise go stam. Seeing as you have 503 defense atm, you can afford to stop socketing for defence and put stam back in.

Also consider the S1 Gladiators Shield Wall, by far the best shield you can get pre-raiding unless you really need the def numbers (which you don't).

actually, it's been shown that the S2 shield is superior to anything you can get pre-Hyjal...

Goblin Rocket Launcher Is a great stam trinket if your a goblin engineer plus and extra 900-1.4k damage every 2 minutes is nice.

Thanks for the tips. I settled on the Warchief's Mantle for the time being and also made a Goblin Rocket Launcher and purchased a cloak of eternity. I am still using the Dabiri's trinket until I have a bit more defense as using Regal Protectorate with this setup drops my defense below 490. I've been trying to do a Heroic a day and the daily Heroics as I can, hoping to get into my first Karazhan on Thursday, so things are looking up.

Thanks again for the tips.

change that to "i'm doing heroic mech, sp and magister's every day" and then you're talking.
