A Hunter's Plea for HelpFollow

#52 Apr 22 2008 at 1:29 PM Rating: Decent
As others have said, this is a great thread.

I'm working my way up (lvl 46 currently). I know I'm coming up to when soloing just doesn't cut it anymore.

Is there a possibility of consolidating all of this delicious information and putting it somewhere to be referenced later by myself and upcoming knowledge seeking hunters?

The diagrams on how to trap should probably be put in the FAQ, that is for sure.

I'll go try and find a post of mine in there that I can edit. I haven't seen mulgrin lately though, so maybe if an admin sees this they can insert it.

I do not have a clue what the hell I am supposed to be doing in a group instance.

That's only natural, because the things you do in a group are almost completely different from the things you do you are solo.

To those of you reading you're no doubt scratching your heads and asking yourselves "How did you get to level 70 then?".

Not at all. Any class can be soloed to 70 quite easily.

Everything I have done to get myself soloed to level 70 is instantly tossed out of the window when I'm in an instance. I'm told that as the group Hunter I have to "trap" certain mobs, as depicted by whatever specific icon the group leader places over it's head. Other mobs are denoted by skulls, big red X's, and an assortment of other Lucky Charms icons. After a few runs of having nonstop expletives tossed my way I ultimately determined that to get the target mob's attention better I use Distracting Shot, at which point he veers away from the pack and comes at me. Have an ice trap ready, and voila! Freeze dried fel orc. This small action, and learning to use it reliably, took me a long time with little to no explanation from party members. In fact they all stood around most of the time amazed that I didn't know how to do it already, despite my numerous explanations that I'd never had to do it this way before.

Correct in method. Could use some refining though. Don't use distracting shot. Use Arcane Shot. If you stand still you'll immediately fire an auto shot after, and those two should see the mob running straight at you. Turn off auto attack. Or, even better, take the tanks target or the 'next kill' target (the skull, X, etc. Whichever one is next to be killed) and start shooting that one.

Try to learn to anticipate the pull. Your trap will stay on the ground, untriggered, for 60 seconds. The best duration, triggered, is 20 seconds. The cooldown is 30 seconds. So if you place your trap early you have the best chance to have the cool down be expired before the trap is triggered and expires. All it takes is a 10 second lead to have no delay between a full duration trap and the placement of another. More time is better, of course. If your cool down expires, drop another trap immediately. Not right on the trapped mob, although that works in a pinch, but with a few steps between you and the trapped mob you lay it between you and the mob, so that once it is free it will sake a step towards you and will be trapped again.

Also anticipate the path of the pull. You need your mob to be the one to cross your trap forst, and the best way to do that is to make sure that it's the only mob to cross your trap. Lay your trap behind the party. Move up until your trap target comes into range. When the tank pulls, shoot your target. Turn and run across your trap, turning off autoshot as you run. Turn back around. See that your target is trapped. Run forward, through the trapped mob. Drop another trap after you pass it. Take another few steps forward, and start shooting the 'next kill' target. When your trap breaks the mob will step towards you and will become trapped again.

Do this enough and you'll be able to do so while also shooting the 'next kill' target, improving your DPS considerably. But getting your target trapped is more important than shooting anything else, so get that part down first, and once you're comfortable you can improve your technique.

On pulls of 5 or 6 mobs, especially in the tougher Instances, you may have to trap the same target 3 times before it becomes the 'next kill' target. Using your trap lead time and cool downs intelligently is the only way to accomplish this. There is no way to pull it off if you're ever 'surprised' when your trap expires and you have to lay a second. The second must be on the ground before the first one breaks or you'll have a loose mob beating on someone. You or a healer, most likely. Either is bad, and your groups will expect you to keep that from happening by using all your skills as a Hunter to prevent that.

Traps get resisted, traps break early. That's just the way things go sometimes. But you need to set yourself up for success in order to keep the same effect from happening when dumb luck isn't working against you.

I for one am glad this has turned into an interesting and informative thread as i am still learning a lot from it , i wanted to thank the guys/girls that have " been there and done that "...

A long time ago and in low groups i found teamwork was seriously lacking so flatly refused to group with anyone again for instances , Only now with my guild will i group for instances because i know their Play styles and more to the point trust them ..

At heart i am and always will be a solo player as i have no real wish to spend two hours or perhaps more trying to keep full concentration on what is going on within a group (my job demands require i keep concentration for 8 hours or more a day ) so this is my relaxation for fun only and to unwind .

So far i have done only one successful run in outland and that was a four man through the underbog mainly as my guild is tiny and very difficult to even get 5 of us on together at the same time ..

I could list the wipes i have had against elite mobs though the levels , but i guess we have all been there and done that , but that was not just hunters needing more understanding , like a druid not healing and not tanking ? or a warlock level 70 with pet on passive not doing a great deal of work either , or a mage not blasting or freezing his way through mobs like i see so many good ones doing , or the Warrior with mail and a leather piece as they had good stats ? , i guess all classes need to learn and the only way is like this thread and of course practice makes perfect..

I just wanted to say a huge 'Thank You' for both the original poster starting this thread, and to all the helpful posts following it!
I also soloed my way up and found a guild in my 40s but didn't really play with anyone till just a few levels ago. I am so worried about my own performance in instances that I will only take my low level guildies on runs through low level ones. I haven't tried any in Outlands and PUGs frighten me to death.
I haven't had one good experience in any of the few I tried.
I am eager to learn and don't want to be labeled just another 'huntard'.
I am also an older player and never gamed before WoW so I had to learn everything from scratch!
Even worse, I am terrified of BGs and have only been in WSG once, so I have no PvP experience at all.
Luckily I am in a fantastic guild that a friend of mine started when we realized that there aren't that many helpful people (at least on our server!). We got really lucky with great people joining our guild as well so now I have great people that are patient to practice with.
However, it's great to have it all spelled out here with helpful pointers and a great picture of what I am supposed to do in instances with pulling.
And the suggestion of how to chain trap has me really excited and ready to go play with a few hellboars next time I log in!
My gear is horrid and that is another reason that I don't group with people I don't know as I know that I will get made fun of for it.
Again, I just wanted to say 'thanks' to all of you for this thread, it's probably the most helpful thread I've read as a hunter.
