Helping a ret pallyFollow

I've just taken charge over one of the kara groups in my guild, after several people who already have the gear from there "retired" and are letting other people gear up from 10-mans. One of the newbies we have replacing them is a ret pally, who's DPS isn't so hot. However, not knowing much about ret pallys, I don't know how to help him.
One problem is that being an entry-level toon, his gear is in need of many upgrades. However, I'm wondering if there's others.

So, while there is a guide in the sticky on ret DPS, I'd like to know about how much of his damage should come from different abilities. That way, if his white damage is doing more than it should, I can tell him to step it up on abilities, or if I see certain abilities that he isn't using I can tell him to use that more.

in blues, auto-attack/SoC/CS should net about 350-400dps.

I'm asking what the breakdown of spells should be. Should it be like 30% white, 30% from SoC, 20% CS, 20% judgements, or what?

Well it doesn't really work like that. He should ALWAYS have SoC up, and it'll proc when it procs. To ensure that it does as much damage as possible, he needs to have as slow of a weapon as he can. 3.8 is the optimal choice. He should also be spamming CS whenever it is up.

As long as he follows that, he should be good. If he can mix in a judge immediately after a swing and pull it up immediately after judging it, before his next swing, then he will do more dps.

It isn't really complicated to dps as a Ret Paladin. As long as he does what I mentioned, then he is doing the max damage he could do. Also popping Avenging Wrath as often as possible and any trinkets with a Use effect as often as possible. But there isn't any shot rotations or combo point/energy managing or rage managing or anything else that other dpsers have to deal with where you can break it down into percentages.

the only things i would add is:

-maximize aggro management
-when to judge JoC(ie, rogues tend to stun early)
-maximize mana and extra spells(consecrate? or exorcism)
-how to use HoW effectively
-what/when/how to judge on bosses
-switching from salv to might if and when applicable

this is stuff that needs to be figured out rather than taught. call it 'advanced' Ret if you will.

honestly, i'd guess his low DPS is more due to not havng gear. if you post his armory we could possibly suggest some relatively simple upgrades.

as far as percentages, i'd suggest white damage should be 35-45% of total damage depending on where you are and what your fighting. demons and undead or AOE pulls i'd say 40ish. demon or undead AOE pulls (ie kara ballroom before moroes) 35 or less for white damage. CS or SoC will be next w/ 20- 25% depending on the fight. in kara exorcism should be 10-15% maybe. JoC will usually be less than 10%. Hammer of Wrath usually is between 1-5%. obviously all these percents could be a bit different depending on the fight. the ballroom in kara i think consecration and holy wrath are about 75% of my damage. in ZA last night i didn't use exorcism or holy wrath even once.

those are aprx percentages but like tommy said, learning when to use more than just auto-attack, SoC and CS effectively takes practice and patient people like you to help and give advice (and encouragement when they do something better than they'd been dong it...)

again link his armory and we can suggest some upgrades...

or even direct him to the gear guide here (or someone elses if you're one of the people that doesn't like me lol)

Well, my guild already has 1 prot pally and 4 holy pallies (one of which needs gear, but so does this guy) so 1 ret pally wont hurt. Hey, 3% extra crit for the raid and the ability to keep a ton of judgments on at once aint bad.

I've linked him to the gear guide here, told him what stats he needs (when I looked up his armory, he was sitting on ~950 AP), and told him that he should be doing a lot of 5-mans and group quests to get gear right now.
