Sapped through flare.Follow

#1 Apr 16 2008 at 11:07 AM Rating: Good
This has been happening to me a lot lately(Even while standing on the coal and trap) so I went to the O-boards to try to find some advice in one of the many threads they have devoted to PVP. While surfing I came across this thread.

forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=5784480416&sid=1&pageNo=1

The thread gave me some useful insight on stealth mechanics, but no real help. So I'm asking all you Alla Hunters out there, what should I do to prevent being sapped/CS'd through my flare?

Also what did this MegaTF guy do that would have so many people on the O-boards supporting him?

Thanks.

MegaTF was the top hutner for a long, LONG time, and contributed a lot to the PvP hunter community, especially with his 2s druid/hunter guide, and the videos with him and his partner fighting against almost every class combo. He then got banned for ~3 days iirc, which got all of his posts deleted.

You have your Flare down. Standing just in front of the middle. Put up Track Hidden, and put pet on aggresive. Standing just on top of a trap works nicely too.

In order to sap you in the flare, he's gotta get close and prolly take his good old time getting to you. (I'd wait the couple seconds until Flare disappears to sap us). Anyway, guarding flags or w/e, I change my tracking all the time. Mostly stays on Hidden, I pop up Track Humaniod to see what all is coming, track beast to see any Druids/Shammies. I always go back to Hidden tho.

Might help a bit. It also might be a bug. On my Druid, I could run right up to a mob while he was facing me, and as long as I spammed Pounce, I'd still stun him fast enough to register.

Sounds like latency issues. Happens a lot to my Druid as well. I sometimes manage to Pounce/Ravage people through AOE and Flares. My guess would be that the Flare doesn't register until after the Druid/Rogue has made his opening move which would be due to the delay in the connection.

Or maybe the Rogue just used Cloak of Shadows and Sprint. Cloak of Shadows increases his resistance to spells by 90%, which includes traps and Flare, I think. If he has Camouflage, he'll be moving almost at normal run speed in stealth. If he pops Sprint while stealthed, he'll be moving as fast as a regular land mount. In stealth.

Not to mention, most Rogues are Shadowstep spec'd due to the imbalance that is Preperation, and Shadowstep teleports them to behind you from x yards away. They'd be able to pop up right behind you and before the Flare effect registers, they've mashed their Sap button.

A rogue's distract will turn you around and open up your back to stun lock. Be sure to stand on your trap too, though good rogues break out of cc a number of ways now.

Nah, flares were made several times weaker a couple patches ago with a reduced detection radius, a "travel time" delay where it won't expose stealths until it acually hits the ground, and we can only have 1 flare out at a time. That same patch, rogues got dirty tricks, a 2nd tier talent in the sub tree that increases the range on sap by 5 yards, which puts their max sap range out of the edge of trap and flare radius. If you stand still on the middle of your trap/flare, they don't even need to blow a cd to sap you.

You're best bet is to put up track hidden and put your pet on aggressive like others have said, but also, you want to keep moving and spinning while throwing out flares in different directions so they have a hard time getting behind you while worrying about a flare landing on top of them randomly. They can still blow their long cooldowns to get you, but then they're stuck blowing prep earlier to keep with you. Rogues are a much, MUCH harder fight than they were several months ago, ESPECIALLY with their more recent buffs, but it's still winnable.

Flare against a wall and put your back to it?

If you're going to stand against a wall, flare about a yard or two in front of you so that you get maximum forward benefit. If they can sap outside of your flare range, this will keep your forward fire clear in any case.

In BG's and sometimes in Arena, I actually place my trap INSIDE a post and stand beside it. It makes me look vulnerable as I pew-pew. The rogues don't see it so they don't know to disarm it and it nails them every time. My freeze trap is my flare. It doesn't matter if they get out of it, I take off the second I hear the freeze trap go off.

It does a good job of nailing warriors intercept as well (as well as hunter pets). I get stunned but they get trapped and I come out before they do (unless we are willing to trinket). I'm off for range, concuss and down them.

This technique is really good in AB & AV and placing the trap inside the capture post. I've nailed and downed countless rogues with the technique. They can't click on the trap because they can't see it and even if they could, it's inside of a clickable object so it just activates the object if they are close enough and the trap goes off killing the capture timer. You and a couple of buddies can mow the rogue down super fast.

I have had no luck with Track Hidden, it never seems to see anything.

Yah, track hidden as simply inferior to what we used to bring against rogues, but it's what we have if you're stuck out in the open... Track hidden only works on your existing detection range for stealth (somewhere between a 90 to 180 degree cone in front of your character) and just pushes it out a little bit... That means that you have to stay moble and proactive to make it useful at all. By jumping around and spinning (like you are kiting something), you're applying track hidden 360 degrees. More often than not when doing this, I'll never actually see the rogue, but will hear the stealth sound and just tab-send pet to flush the rogue out.

If you're BM, you should have no real issues with Rogues. Sure, they might get an opener off on you, but since you're standing on a Snake Trap they are suddenly slowed and being attacked by snakes and your Pet while you're Trinket -> run straight forward and start the kite. Serpents Sting, Arcane, Concussive, Arcane, Intimidate, Arcane and then Auto/SS until he is dead. Any issues in the middle there are readily eliminated via the BW win button.

Other specs may have a slightly harder time of it, although Marks adds Scatter Shot while losing Intimidate and SV adds any number of PvP tricks from Entrapment to Surefooted to Imp Wing Clip and more, and can still have Scatter Shot in a PvP focused build.

I make Rogues cry in BGs, and given their sneaky "Haha, I got you from surprise" natures I enjoy beating Rogues more than any other class. The only thing I find remotely annoying about fighting a Rogue is needing to kill them for 4 seconds while their Cheat Death wears off.
