Were hunters originally intended to melee?Follow

Looking at the old beta talents (someone linked them in the druid forum) and it appears hunters were originally more of a melee/ranged hybrid class. The survival tree offered a lot of buffs to strictly melee (whereas now they are not). It appears that in the "current" (pre-tbc) talents it was changed, but it's just an interesting piece.

because hunters were intended to be more like rangers, a.k.a without pets?
And after they added pets in some testing phase the melee talents were still there?

Hunters just used to be the laughing stock of the game... Next to warlocks.

Gosh I still remember looking at those talents in game. If you ever wondered why people were so fond about Broken Tooth, look at the old Spirit Bond!

Really cant imagine a hunter in melee, especially since they dont have much melee special attacks. Just raptor strikes and an occasional mongoose bite.

Almost all people that I knew specced MM pre-bc, myself included. Those talents were pre-1.7, after that BM had a huge revamp.

And the fact that Brokentooth had a 1.0 attack speed and back in the day a caster could never get a non-instant spell off with him on them. He blazed.

It is pretty weird, Survival was all melee and traps. It's funny also how short talent trees used to be :D.

That is pretty wild. It reminds me of FF11's Beastmaster. You'd sit there and melee along side of your pet. Hmmm, wonder what game came out 1st? Maybe they changed it so it's not a replica of BST in FF11?

I doubt it. Blizzard is never shy about "borrowing" ideas that work. Chances are, they saw that nobody rolled hunters back then, and the people who were crazy enough to roll one just didn't melee. Instead of trying to buff up the melee skills, they decided to move hunters more towards ranged... And I'm so happy that they did. If I wanted to run up and melee stuff, I wouldn't have rolled a hunter.

Survival hunters back in those days were a huge laughing stock. Lacerate was worse than a Warrior's Rend, and Warriors laugh at how bad Rend is.

Bliz might have made Survival melee centric to give Hunters another play style, but the talents are just to bad to support it.
