But seriously: For leveling go combat swords. If for no other reason than itemization. Read any of the several threads on this, and other, boards for more detail about the standard combat swords build.
End game PvE (t4 and on) the debate is still between combat swords and fist/sword far as I know.

Mace/sword is also a fairly good combination since the 2.3 changes to Mace Specialization, especially if you can get your hands on something like this.
