Perhaps I'm missing it... (holy)Follow

I may be missing some threads of this being asked, but the FAQ did help a bit, just wanted more of a confirmation.

I'm planning on levelling holy all the way (no matter how slow it is... this is just a get-away toon), and was looking at the FAQ and Holy end-game thread. I did see the 23/38/0 spec, and there was also one for 18/43/0 for raiding.

Since I'll probably be soloing until I get up to levels to start doing some instances, how viable would it be to take Holy Nova. Also would it be ideal to put my extra point into Martyrdom in this type of build, and would this work for raiding and endgame?

Any help or if you want to point me in the right direction, would be greatly appreciated... or if you want to tell me to GTFO, go for it.

I started Horton three weeks ago, and I'm up to level 54 using a Holy spec.

I highly reccommend you put five points in Spirit Tap and five points in Wand Specialiazation. These two talents make it so I very rarely sit and drink. When you are done soloing, you can respec to get a pure build like the one's you mentioned.

The other thing you want to do is get the best wand you can for your level. See this post for four wands I recommend that will last you into your 30's.

In regards to Holy Nova, it is moderately useful for those situations where you run into low-level pets(e.g., those bugs in the barrens, swarmers in Tanaris, etc.). Holy Nova is a spamable AE that will wipe them out and your mana pool pretty quick. That is the only time I really use the spell.

So pretty much it'd be useless (Holy Nova), minus it being an AoE. I can survive without it, I think then.

As for the wand spec and spirit tap, I'll definitely see if I can find a good wand to use.

Thanks for the info =)

The only other reason to get Holy Nova is if you plan on doing lots of PvP as it can knock Rogues and Druids out of Stealth.

Other than that I found it to be a mana hog and not really worth the talent point.

I would go for something like this if you are mostly solo and farming/grinding with a HOLY spec. The advantages of this are: 1) spirit based for more damage/healing. 2) spirit recovery of mana. 3) wand for grinding. 4) smite damage enhanced with very little cost ... you would still be a powerful healer for any instance.

Velluna - that build is pretty neat but personnaly I would max out Holy Specialisation instead of putting points in Inspiration. Priests shouldn't rely on crits but while leveling it's not a bad thing since it applies to every Holy spell, offensive or defensive. And I don't think maxing out Silent Resolve is really necessary while leveling.

Do not take Martyrdom if you do not PvP often on the toon.

With the shield up all the time and a 5% crit rate of mobs, you may never see its fruit.

Thank you all for your replies, I'm absorbing this knowledge like a sponge... just not one of those "I just finished washing the dishes" type of sponge... but a brand spanking new sponge eager to learn.

So from what I gathered, Holy Nova and Matryrdom wouldn't be too useful in a more PVE/raid environment as other things.

I could see putting the points from inspiration into holy specialization if you were going for more of a pure smite damage build. I was putting in the balance build for healing as well (usually when somebody says they want to level holy it is because the expect to heal in instances as well as solo). For healing, inspiration is really nice for the damage mitigation. It only starts to lose its appeal very late in the game when the tanks are already maxed out and the extra 25% armor doesn't help them.

As far as silent resolve goes ... I think those points are worth it for both healing and damage. Since this is smite damage (holy) the silent resolve reduces threat for those as well (and smite dps priests can put out very fast/spike damage that can pull aggro). Considering the other talent options in that tree to build toward Imp Spirit, I don't see a better alternative to the silent resolve for the smite/healing build.

I'm actually a mild fan of Holy Nova. Sure, it's a mana hog, but the combined healing and AoE damage without any threat has numerous situational uses in both PvE and PvP.

In a similar vein, Silent Resolve. While you don't have to max it, it does play an important role in low-level instances. You see, while you're leveling a healer, you have to put up with people who are leveling tanks. The reduced threat will help keep you alive.

Chahdresh - I had to rate you up as I never really thought of it that way, but that is definitely a key point when it comes to instance runs.

Regarding finding a good wand... Just find an enchanter and have them make you a Lesser Magic Wand or Greater Magic Wand if you are at the right level. Should be able to find them on the AH from time to time, also.

Yeah, my rogue is an enchanter so I'll most likely make myself a nice wand (unless a nicer one drops).

So far, this is what I've gathered from everyone, hopefully I didn't miss anything.

~ Get a nice wand
~ Holy Nova isn't worth it, pretty much
~ Silent Resolve is great for both levelling (with tanks that are learning) and to keep myself alive. Me being alive = almost everyone else staying alive
~ Martyrdom is not needed since I probably won't be able to see it's full potential.

I would add the following:
~ Spec five points into Spirit Tap
~ Spec five points into Wand Specialization

I chose Spirit Tap first and it was really nice when it proc'd as I was leveling it up to max.

That's right, forgot about those two. Thanks!
