Kara gearFollow

#1 Apr 13 2008 at 2:58 PM Rating: Decent
Hey, I just hit 70 a few days ago on my mage and I want to gear uo for Kara ASAP. I have some Kara worthy gear (working on my FSW, Auchenai staff), but i'll need some more high end stuff before going for Kara (and I don't wanna go in with all that pvp crap...). Any suggestions on what specific gear I should be aiming for?

p.s-I'm determined to stick with frost, so spellfire doesn't count xD

As you are insisting to stay with frost do finish your FSW set and try for a Spellstrike set. Until you get more gear fill in what gear you need to with some of the pvp gear. The belt from pvp is better than anything in Kara. Use the Kara runs to get yourself some good badges and some nice loot there as well.

Also, the pvp weapons are actually pretty nice. I would pick up the s1 dagger or staff for a wep with some nice +dmg. Don't disregard pvp gear, it isn't all that bad when the other options are worse (blue weps from 5 mans).

Gem your gear with Veiled Noble Topaz and get the hit cap, then go for Runed Living Ruby.

save up a ton of badges and get the new loot that will be coming when your server unlocks(ed) the anvil to get some pants and other things. You can get the icon of the silver crescent (trinket), witch doctor's stick (wand), studious wraps (gloves), some wrist piece, maybe a couple others, I can't quite remember.

K thanks for the answers. Also, I do pvp a fair bit, but I'd rather go in to Kara in pve gear. Ohh, and I have another question: I'm sure heroics are easier then Kara and can be used to gear up for it, so what kind of +spell dmg and crit % am I looking at for heroics? Health and mana?

Heroics vary quite a bit one their difficulty, I find that Kara is easier than some of the harder ones (shattered halls comes to mind).

I haven't really focused on heroic-ready stats, but shoot for something like 6k hp unbuffed, 7-8k mana pool, probably 500 to 600 damage, and for frost around 20% buffed crit would be good. I also think you need around 50 spellhit as well.

With a paladin tank, Shattered Halls is probably equal in difficulty to Kara. Without, yeah, probably harder.

shattered halls is just a matter of CC.
take 2 CC with u and u are good to go.
never had any prob in this instance.

edit:
and dont forget. skill makes up a bit for gear. i went to kara with around 600 +damage, around 9k mana and did really fine.
im frost too and cant imagine ever speccing something else^^

K I've just got one more question :P
Like I said, I want to be as effective as I possibly can be while still sticking with frost (in other words, spamming my frostbolts). Right now, I'm 0/0/61... Would a little arcane be more effective?

Going into Kara with long boss fights clear casting can be really effective. I would go with somthing like this

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/mage/talents.html?tal=2300050000000000000000000000000000000000000000535220310235010251551

I was frost for a VERY long time. Level 10 - a couple months into 70. Let's keep in mind my mage is my alt (have a 70 resto shammy), so he doesn't get to raid as much or get gear because he's an alt.

Fire... is kinda fun. For PvP it can be a bit frustrating at first, until you get the hang of it. The only 2 things I REALLY miss are cold snap and ice barrier. The elemental while cool is not that impressive in my opinion. Fire gets quite a bit of stun and disorientation with blast wave and dragon's breathe. Sometimes that can make a difference in wipe alone that no frost mage could ever handle.

For raiding, the only issue again is ice barrier and cold snap (for ice block/ice barrier). Being able to absorb a good chunk of aoe damage when you are on the low end of being geared is very useful because you will have low health compared to better geared players, and a dead mage does 0 dps.

I don't understand why people are so intent on HAVING to be frost. I think you should try different builds just so you are a better mage. Frost is kind of easily boring... if you are specced right you just spam frost bolt. Frost will decline in usefulness the further you go because bosses are immune to being frozen in place so no shatter crits. Shatter is the talent that lets frost stay equal to (or even slightly above) fire.
