CowerFollow

I'd like to know if the pet skill Cower would be worth using during instances. if you want your pet to help out with the MT or other melee but don't want it to steal aggro, would that be a decent solution?

Thanks in advance

Turn off Growl.

It's not really necessary, if you have growl off then your pet won't get aggro.

A waste of an ability slot and a bunch of points, over all. The uses it does have are far too situational.

yeah but id like to keep growl on in case i get into trouble. this would be a specifically instance pet anyway so points dont matter as much.

Its easier and better to just switch growl on and off when you need it.
Using both growl and cower would result in the same thing as just having growl turned off.

If you use growl and cower at the same time, they pretty much cancel each other out and waste your pet's energy. You're better off not having cower, and turning growl on in a pinch.

If your pet pulls aggro from the tank with growl off then you are doomed anyway. :)

Even if growl was on I would still be worried.

If i see a mob making a bee-line for the healer, I will select mob, Ctrl+1 (petattack), and right-click Growl back on. The pet can tank it until the MT steps in and regains aggro. That's the only time I use Growl. I don't have Cower at all.
If my pet dies, so be it. Better than a dead healer.

I have forgotten on several occasions to turn Growl off again. Usually doesn't change anything. Most times nobody notices.
This is for Level 70 instances though. For lower levels, Growl may be effective enough to grab aggro from the tank.

You had a good tank, then. I have had groups where my pet pulled aggro off the tank (let's just say they were PUGs...). Honestly, even with a good, competent tank, turning Growl off is helpful, as it makes the tank's work a little easier. It's sort of like asking the mage to not open with Pyro->PoM->Pyro (admittedly not quite in the same category of stupid, but still...).

Seriously, though, it's better to just remember to turn Growl off in groups then to waste a precious ability slot with Cower.

Remember, you can always manually 'growl' your pet. Leave the skill off and just click the growl icon. If your pet has the available focus, it will growl and produce the threat boost.

I do this all the time.

I've never had a problem with my pet pulling aggro on instance runs as long as I had growl off. I usually get reminded when I accidentally leave it on. My pet is dead and I'm wondering why. d'oh!

I've read arguments suggesting cower is good for high DPS pets like ravagers on instance runs. However I've personally never had any problem as long as growl was off. Then again, I ditched my ravager for a boar once I'd learned all the pet skills. So you can take my input with a grain of salt.

I've used slashdot's trick when soloing. Leave growl off and just click on it when a mob turns and comes for me. Usually a single growl will turn the mob back to my pet. That allows the pet to spend its focus on its attack skill and the mob theoretically should die quicker. However it doesn't seem much quicker and I'm lazy. I leave growl on when soloing these days. ;)

In my biased opinion, Cower is a waste of points and a waste of slot on your pet's ability bar. It'd be less hassle to just turn growl off when you group. After all, you can manually activate growl when you need it.

People actually use cower? Perhaps it's just because I got off work, but I can't think when it would ever be useful.

The only time i ever used cower was when i first started as the explanation of cower was ambiguous at best , i thought the " cower reduces your threat " was for me not my pet , but at least a decent hunter explained it in clearer English..

I can see no reason to ever use it again either , We have the pet to keep us or party members alive and to create a nice extra damage bonus , and using cower would mean the pet is not doing the job it is supposed to do..
