Dreadsteeds - are they worth it - do you have one?Follow

#1 Apr 13 2008 at 9:03 AM Rating: Decent
As a fairly casual player, it's taken me a while, but I have just hit 60 with my gnome warlock and without pausing for breath I ran headlong into the Dreadsteed quest with out bothering to read up on the quest chain.

About 200g later and about halfway through the quests, having just completed the mats part and about to start on the Xorothian Glyphs branch, i actually read a bit about whats left and find to my horror that there is another 5 quests to do and on top of that its going to cost me another 200g or so.

I am aware that some of the mats can be obtained from another lock but as a mainly solo player up till now that might not be an option, furthermore, i know that to get a normal epic will cost a lot more in gold but maybe not in time or frustation (getting together a pug and getting to and from the quest givers, etc..)

My questions to the more experienced warlocks out there are these:

1) Do you own a Dreadsteed and do you now think it was worth doing so looking back?

2) Is there a certain amount of prestige in owning one and do you look down on level 60+ locks who don't have one?

I'm not a lazy player by any means, but lacking anyone else to ask i thought i would post on this forum and look forward to your advice.

I don't have one and wouldn't use it if I did. A: It costs more to get than a regular epic racial mount since you have to pay people to do the instances required. B: People see you on a big *** horse on fire and know you're a warlock and try to kill you as soon as possible. I'll stick with my mechanical chicken kthnx. I too did like the first half of the quest, then scrapped it and bought a racial mount. The quest just isn't worth doing anymore except as a novelty item.

Edit: Even without having to pay people to do the instances, the gold cost is still pretty much the same.

Its been hard ,its been boring, exausthing and everyting, lotta bad vibes when i was doing whole q line.

Took me about a week,to get past scholo ,dm and to find another lock with mats.
But all of that passes and you're left with you unique badass mount.

1.yes and yes
2.i dont look down on anyone but you aint a "proper" lock until you have your dreadsteed ,cant argue with that.

At 70 in my gear I'm 90% positive that with several deaths and a great expenditure in pots and learning zones so I can jump the ramps and suchlike and keep mobs off me, I could solo the entire quest line. Would I do it solo or even if people offered to help? Absolutely not. Buy a regular mount, don't waste your time on this outdated quest.

Yes to both! With a half-decent guild, they aren't that hard to get.

I don't look down on locks that don't have it, but I see it as a rite of passage that a warlock really should take the effort to go through. The reward (best looking mount in the game IMO) far outweighs the work involved.

Same question popped up about the pally epic mount. While not as difficult to get as the lock mount it's still a hassle. But in the end you do have a sweet mount, and the Charger and Dreadsteed are probably the two coolest looking mounts in the game. If you're in a decent guild you shouldn't have problems getting people to help you out. And in the end it's all worth it.

lvl.70 warlocks of all specs can solo the entire event, though with lower gear levels, afliction or demo is required.

Had mine for years now, really don't care anymore. The look is OK I guess, I'm bored of it. I can't picture my lock riding anything else, but I haven't played my gnome for a while now. I'd get a war lolekk though if I still played him.

Just dinged 60 on my paladin, did the quest line for that mount. Its ugly. I only did it to save on riding training, and because at the time I wasnt about to grind AV marks as prot for my wolf.

So I did some ez mode quests on my pally and payed a rogue to run me through. This makes me not a scrub now? Now I'm a real paladin because I have the mount? OK.... Go RP moar imo.

Its a freaking mount, who cares.

@ the OP: Its sort of expensive, but I'd wager on most servers you save a wee bit of cash instead of just flat out buying epic riding skill and a mount.

I have two.

One for my Gnome and one for my Undead...

Pretty easy to get if your guild will run Scholo and DM with you.

Also, it helps the pocketbook if you bring along another Warlock who has the three items you'll need for the summoning so you dont have to buy them.

The three items (not counting the items you'll need for the prerequisite quests) will cost about 250g total, and the dust costs 150g, I think. So all in all you'll be spending about 400g-500g for all of the items, including the items needed for the pre-quests... unless you have them or farm them.

It costs about 510g for riding training if you are revered and 85g for a mount... if you decide to NOT go after the Dreadsteed. (540g/90g if not revered)

No, heh. It's just that the quest line takes a few hours tops, and there's bound to be other locks with the mats who will hire out for much less than the original cost of the items. Either way you were sixty, and a pally.

A dreadsteed makes a warlock special, no excuse not to have the second best mount in the game. ;)

There is however, ample excuse not to have the best one, a war bear. They range from "Someone out-rolled me AGAIN ASF!@#$DS" to "my guild sucks" to "what's za?" to "durdurdur".

I got mine at 60, and yes, it was totally worth it. I mean come on, it's a flaming demon horse. It doesn't get much more awesome than that (unless you have a war bear or something.) My other characters only wish they could get mounts that cool.

The quest chain really isn't that hard. Getting instance groups can be annoying but even that isn't so bad if you have friends, and even if you don't there are always other people trying to do those quests. Just keep LFGing even if it takes a few days.

Post your server and faction (Horde/Alliance) and there's a decent chance there's a warlock on these boards that can help you with the quest items. (I have mine, still.)

I don't think of the steed as a prestige item, but as an accomplishment. I couldn't care less what other players think of it. I don't look down on other locks who don't have one, because I know how difficult it is to get a group together to do Scholomance and Dire Maul.

Rasen put it best. It is almost like a rite of passage. I just got mine this weekend on my lock. The battle was not too hard as we are all 70 but me. They actually enjoyed the battle royal part. The hardest part is the mats, but with the amount of money I can pull on my rogue it is not hard to pay out a few hundred gold. All in all it is annoying to get yes, but I think it's worth it.

Actually bothered to get mine last week. I had all the mats required when i was level 60 but what i lacked was the social network ive now made and the amazing guild im in now, took a couple of friends in with me and completed it.

I'd never thought the mount was to special when i saw others on it and i had always wanted a kitty from the moment i saw one, now i have the dreadsteed i think the kitty is gonna be spending a lot of time with my grypon and nether ray in the bottom of a bag in my bank.

While your there you may want to complete one of the quests to learn the doomguard ritual because i finished this at the same time.

The dreadsteed is, IMO, the best looking mount in the game, and I wouldn't miss it for anything. I got mine at lvl 67, after having already bought the pvp undead mount. I had planned this because my guild didn't have enough high-level chars when I dinged 60, otherwise I'd have done it back then.

If you need help with the summoning ritual, you can search the Warlocks Den* and see if there's any locks on your realm with the summoning mats. Their database of locks is very extensive, so there should be a good chance of finding someone to help you. Just be aware that you'll likely have to supply the group. It can be difficult to get one if you're not in a guild, but offer gold for help and it should be possible with some work. It's worth it, and you won't regret it.

Warlocks Den: http://www.wowmb.net/forums/showthread.php?t=21937
You'll need to register to search the memberlist, but it's free to do, and besides, it's an awesome site for warlocks.

If you skip the Dreadsteed, you miss what I consider to be one seriously cool event.

The ritual graphics for the actual summoning are top notch and make you want to raise up your sword, like He-Man, and shout "I HAVE THE POWER!!!"

Oh... and the horse is kinda neat, too.

It's totally worth it -- the dreadsteed is a very, very cool looking epic mount. I mean, these days, with the proliferation of epic mounts, it seems everyone is riding something different, but the dreadsteed is really a signature of the warlock class, and every warlock should really try to get one.

Would I like one? Yes. But at 70 it is still not worth the time and effort.
Do I have one? No.
Do I look down on other warlocks without one? No. I'm a gnome. Hard to look down on anyone.
Once I hit Outlands the gold started to flow in. I did not have a guild at that time, I looked at the quest line, and decided that what I wanted was the 100% speed so I went and got the chicken mount. If I was human I would have probably went through with it.

I have helped at least one other warlock to get theirs and think it's great if you want it for the ego boost. Operationally the time spent doing the quest chain and getting together PUGs for the instances would have been more than the time to farm/quest for the difference in gold.

Summary: Getting gold was (and still is) easy as a casual player even without a supportive guild. Getting together instance runs in old places are not.

Whether something is worth the time and effort is completely a matter of opinion. Yes, you can probably farm up the extra few hundred G in less time than it would take to do all the quests, but that's doesn't matter to a lot of people. Some people just like having fancy mounts. People do class mount quests for the same reason people grind rep or PVP or spam instances for mounts instead of just buying the racial. Some people just want that dreadsteed/talbuk/netherdrake/whatever and don't mind doing extra work for it even if it's not the most time/money efficient way to go.

On my draenei warrior I ground SW exalted for a horse just because I hate elekks. Sure I could have taken those few day I spent rep grinding and farmed or leveled instead, but I really wanted a horse, so for me it wasn't a waste of time even though in the end I didn't get anything "better" out of it.

I got mine at 63 and don't regret one second of it. When Attuneman dropped the steed, I won the roll. I currently ride him, cause he is "bad" looking and I haven't seen anyone else with it on my server altho I'm sure ppl have it.
