Question: Where do I find soul shards?Follow

#1 Apr 11 2008 at 12:43 PM Rating: Default
Yes, I read the guide, it's links are out of date.

The most difficult part of playing my warlock so far is how I run out of soul shards so quickly. Yes, I know the trick where you make your familiar sit and walk away to spare a shard. Still, I eat them up too quickly. Especially since I love to have a reraise option always on. No, I cannot afford a large soul shard bag. It just isn't in my budget. That means I have to hunt souls often. And often I find myself surrounded by soulless beasts.

Can anyone help me out here? Is there a guide or addon that tells you where the nearest soulfull victims are?

Please help. Ty.

um... I hope you're not more than lvl 10.

The spell 'drain soul' creates a soul shard when being channeled on something that dies. Additionally, you must be able to get experience from that mob (e.g. it must be at least 'green' to you to get s soul shard.

So, for example, you put Curse of Agony & Corruption on something while your void walker is hitting it. Then you cast 'drain soul' on it. When it dies, you hear a 'ding' and you have another soul shard in your bag. FYI, you're a warlock, get used to having a bag to carry shards in. It's like a hunter with ammo. It's the price you pay for being OP.

I think part of your problem may be that you're a paladin...

LOL. I play more than one character. ROFL.

I know how to get a soul shard. How do I find the mob easier?

You go to a zone closer to your level. You can find it under the "Zones by level" link to the left.

I guess there is no addons that help find the nearest sentient life form at your lvl. It would be great if there were. It would be even better if soul shards stacked.

Is it really that hard to find mobs to kill? Frankly half the time I'm questing in a zone I can't get AWAY from mobs my level. Which is good, really, because often I have to kill them for the quests I'm working on.

Are you doing grey/low level quests or something?

No, I think he got to lvl 10 and is now going around SW summoning voidwalkers infront of NPC's and then talking to them for hours on end.
Seriously though if you can't find any mobs your level then WtF are you doing?

A mob doesn't need to be "sentient" to give you a soul shard from Drain Soul, it just needs to be an appropriate level (ie, rewards exp or honor when you kill it). You can get shards from mechanical/undead/etc no problem.

Use your "Gauge Soul" spell or buy a "SoulSeer X15" if you're an Engineer to check the soul-level of the sentient being you're interested in (should be classified as Sentient, not Humanoid/Beast/Giant/Elemental/Undead). If the soul is bad, it means your most likely going to get a Black "spoiled" soul shard, which isn't as good as a Green, Topaz, or White one. The best are "poor" and "unfortunate" because they grant "Dingleboppers" which allow you to created a psychotic Squid lady pet.

Best Addon I've found for it is called SoulHelpzer

Can find it on Curse.com

I'll bite. What I think you're trying to say is that you are draining mobs that will not provide a soul shard. That really means that you are fighting critters that are too low for your level. Only green or better mobs will give you soul shards. That means that you have to pay attention to your tooltip/target icon. If it's gray, don't bother to attack it - it will never give you a soul shard (or XP, for that matter - gray mobs are for farming, and are useless otherwise).

Drain Soul's tooltip clearly says that you only get a Soul Shard if the mob whose soul you take would give you experience or honour.

No, I didn't ask you to repeat your question - what I wanted to know, in light of the responses, what exactly, your issue was.

To summarize:

- Any beast, humanoid, demon, dragonkin, undead, elemental, etc at or around your level will yield you a soul shard if you're draining soul while it dies.
- when you quest, most of the time you're killing the above types of mobs around your level - which means that if you drain soul it should be very easy to maintain your supply.
- to ensure that mobs in a zone are likely around your level, hit the zones by level section to the left.
- Azeroth and Outalnd are thick with mobs. How is it that you're not encountering any? How are you able to level without encountering quest mobs or mobs that yield XP?
- I have no idea what your hang up is on sentient. What does that have to do with anything? Besides, by the commen definition, most (all?) mobs you kill are sentient.

So. What, exactly, are the difficulties you're running into.

Don't just copy and paste your question, read the above and, taking that into account, tell us what the problem is.

Why do you need an add-on to find something that you can easily run into if you take 4 steps off a road in a zone of your level? I was wondering what the difficulty was because I was wondering if you were making it harder than it needed to be.

Jem, you're looking at the world through Abramic tinted glasses. Everything has a soul. If you can get XP/Honor from it, you can get a soul shard from it.

There's no way an add-on could find nearby mobs the right level to Drain Soul. That's part of the "Tracking" feature, and is specific to a few classes, one race, a few professions, and important town NPCs. Hunters can track anything, Paladins can track Undead, Warlocks can track Demons, and cat-form Druids can track Humanoids. Dwarves can track "Treasure". Etc, etc.

Seriously, lol, I thought beasts did not put out souls.

I'm pretty sure the last thing Blizzard would want to do is have souls come from only humanoids and have a giant religious issue and lose thousands if not tens/hundreds of thousands of subscribers just because of some stupid thing like that.

ANY mob that grants experience will give a soul, whether you think it has a soul or not. Granted you cast Drain Soul on it as it is dieing.
