Too Much Def? Wrong Gems?Follow

Fellow druid tanks - can you spare some advice? I've been enchanting, glyping and gemming my gear with mainly STA and AGI bonuses and in bear mode it's gotten me up to the mid 12k's in health and close to 30% dodge. I have long since passed uncrittable. Using the defense script...

/script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage(2.6-(GetCombatRatingBonus(CR_DEFENSE_SKILL)*.04+GetCombatRatingBonus(CR_CRIT_TAKEN_MELEE)),1,0.5,0)

I'm well over -2.0 which is a lot more than I need to tank raid bosses.

Is there such a thing as having too much defense?

Also, all of my yellow gems (1 in the head slot, 1 in the shoulders, 2 in the chest, 1 in the pants, 1 in the boots) are the "+4 Defense, +6 STA" variety. I take them primarily to boost my health, and to add to my dodge value, but I realize that it's diminishing returns on the defense because I don't have parry or block.

Here's my armory: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Hydraxis&n=Krizz

Are there any other gems I should consider in place of my yellow gems? Will I benefit from all the excess Defense? I appreciate any help you can give me.

You're right that any defense over 415 (/w SotF talent) is of little value compared to other stats. I would definitely avoid any extra defense and gem for agility and stamina instead (which sounds like what you're doing).

If you're really set on keeping your socket bonuses, I recommend replacing your defense gems with the Glinting Noble Topaz for yellow slots (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=24061).

Otherwise, many folks will tell you, ignore socket bonuses and gem straight agi & stam.

Good luck,
-B

The only time I would even try for the socket bonus is if:

a) I need to meet the reqs for a meta gem.

or

b) The socket bonus is really good (+3 Agi, +4 Sta, or maybe +3 hit)
c) the socket is either yellow (DPS/tanking) or blue (tanking)
and d) There's only one off-color socket (Red for DPS, blue for tanking)

With the new defense enchants to Back and Chest, you should be able to get to 415 defense with very few, if any, Def rating gems. After the defense cap, Agi gives more avoidance than Def rating, and adds crit for more threat and rage. (It takes ~15 Agi for 1% dodge, and ~30 Def rating for .5% dodge + .5% miss)

I had an epiphany moment (or is it a n00b moment? one or the other) after reading your posts - I never realized that you could fit any color gem into any color socket, and that you'd only match them if you wanted the socket bonuses. I ran out and regemmed both my toons soon after and things got much better! My druid still has way too much Defense, but the gems I did manage to swap out pushed my unbuffed dodge to above 31% in bear mode. Woot!

Thanks for helping me out with this. I do love these forums!

Is there a lvl of defense that makes you uncrushable? I was told that and was wondering for myself if this is true for bears? And if so, what lvl of D would that be?

And if I'm way out in left field, well than so be it, i'm trying to learn more and more for my bear as well. I dam sure don't know everyrthing by the numbers, but im trying to learn more as i go.

Nope Bear tanks can't become uncrushable (normally).

There was a theoretical gear setup out there somewhere that allowed one to become uncrushable for short periods by increasing their dodge to over 102% but at that point your threat gen would be so poor that its not considered worth it.

Basically Blizzard went and made it pretty much impossible/impractical for Druid tanks to be Uncrushable because of our huge bonuses through talents and Dire bear form to reach extremely high HP and Armor stats.

Between those two stats, plus our high dodge rate, which should be around 30%, our damage mitigation and ability to absorb those crushing blows tends to balance out the fact that we can't become uncrushable.

I've seen a few guides out and about that show you how you can be uncrushable for a few seconds, good luck in putting together that package.
