Dinged 70 maybe 2 weeks ago on my Pally. Loving it, having a blast tanking. however I am having kind of a hard time getting my Defensive skills up. I dont feel that I am ready for heroics yet, however looking through atlas loot I really cant find too many signifigant upgrades in normal dungeons.

Currently I run as often as possible:
BoT, for shield and shoulders.
SV, for chest off warlord.
Shatt Halls, for trinket. (is it really worth it?)
Dark Portal, for trinket.
A few others, (at work can't remember what exactly from who exactly.)

Basically I am seeing some nice gear in some of these instances, but I will be loosing alot of armor and stats if I switch to get a little more def. I have read all applicable stickies and I see what they are telling me to get, is it really worth it to loose stats just to gain a little defense?

Guild raids kara with 2 groups, I am not ready for kara so I am not getting in on that. I guess I could get some help in heroics with some friends, but that will be gimping the group quite a bit. Do I have good enough gear to run a heroic Mech? or SV, or one of the easier ones?

Thank you for any and all help.

Honestly speaking, I'd say you'd get, maybe, 2 shot in a heroic in your current gear. Didn't calculate how much total health you have, because in your armory you're raid buffed; 13k health is a tad low for being raid buffed, however, and your avoidance/mitigation is also kinda on the low end.

Rule of thumb: Don't wear PvP gear for PvE. And the new honor PvP gear is quite trashy for either, imho.

The things that stand out to me that you should be able to get your hands on at the moment, are as follows:

D3 Shoulder from Laj, The Botanica
Bracers of the Green Fortress, crafted
Boots of the Protector(?), crafted (Probably got the name wrong, the blacksmithing BoP boots.)
.
.
.
I could go on, but here's a nifty resource instead: Maintankadin.

Also, all you newer paladins are so much luckier with 2.4! You could potentially get your 15 badges for Libram of Repentance without even stepping foot into a raid or heroic. Just spam the SSO dailies that give you the bag with the green in it as a reward; they sometimes give a badge as well.

Good luck!

Your trinkets will come from Shattered Halls and a quest in Netherstorm (Figurine of the Colossus & Dabiri's Enigma) ... what on earth could you want in Black Morass? Black Morass is for the rep for the Continuum, Time Warden's Leggings, and Glyph of the Defender. And yes, the Figurine of the Colossus is HUGE with over 4% toward uncrushable.. you'll using it at least until you get a Libram of Repentance, and maybe after that as well.

I should mention that Jewelcrafters can make a Dawnstone Crab which is slightly better than Dab's Enigma from Thrallmar Rep... but you aren't a Jewelcrafter so what's that matter eh?

Chest in Steam Vaults? What?! If you aren't Aldor (and have easy access to the Vindicator's Hauberk) go for the Jade-Skull Breastplate in Mechanar off the caster boss. Keep hitting SV for the Devilshark Cape though.

Straight down the list:

- Helm is decent
- CE Revered Necklace
- Shoulders from Laj in Botanica
- Devilshark Cape in SV
- Jade-Skull/Vindicator's from Mech/Aldor Rep
- Bracers are decent, though Green Fortress crafted are better

- Sha'tari Vindicator's Waistguard from "Breaking into the Arcatraz" quest
- The boots for the quest in Mana Tombs
- Top Ring is awesome
- Andormu's Tear from the Black Morass quest or the ring from Shadowmoon quests
- Dabs Enigma (Or Regal Protectorate is fine if you already got something else from that quest)
- Figurine of the Colossus

- Weapon + Enchant is pure gold

- Shattered Sun Offensive Exalted Shield, take your pick but the one with spell damage will serve you better. OR a Shield of the Wayward Footman.

- Libram of Repentance if you can get enough badges from Shattered Sun Offensive quest turnins, otherwise wait till your better geared and get them out of heroics.

Also.. don't gem for spell damage. You shouldn't HAVE to gem for anything but Stamina, but if you want to cut a couple corners to get your defense up quickly before you fill out all your gear slots.. +8 Defense or +4 Def/+6 STA are a good alternative.

Glyph of the Defender on your head, Aldor/Scryer inscription on your shoulders, + Dodge on your cloak, +15 Defense or +150 HP or +6 stats on chest, +12 Defense or +12 Stamina on bracers, +2% threat on gloves, don't upgrade to Nethercleft yet on your pants, but you should probably get that on your NEXT pair.., Boar's Speed or +12 STA on boots.

Seriously I have run mechanar like 4 times only and have seen Jade Skull Breastplate drop evertime of that boss. It was for me the easiest by far piece of tanking gear to acquire.

Once you have finsihed the chain quests for the Black Morass you should have enough Rep to pick up the Continuum blade, the glyph and the pants. I think you may need around 150-200g for all of them. You can try picking up a Crystalforged Blade off the AH too. This will help you reach uncrushable a little quicker and goes for around 100-200g.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!!
I had to run Mech 13 times before I saw it drop. That stupid neckless dropped at least 5 of them too!!

To be honest, I followed the Def/Mig checklist and I'm >5% avoid from UnCrush (which the libram will solve when I get enough markers).

I'm still using the Continuum Blade. With a +40 spell damage and a good stock of Sup. Wiz Oil I really don't worry about spell damage. Sword +121, +40 Chant, +42 Oil = 203 (more than enough).

Your defence is low though.

Quoting Def/Mig Sticky
For Warriors and Paladins, every point of Defense Skill:
- Increases the chance to be Missed by 0.04%.
- Increases the chance to Dodge by 0.04%.
- Increases the chance to Parry by 0.04%.
- Increases the chance to Block by 0.04%.
- Decreases the chance to receive a Critical Hit by 0.04%.

48 more points in your defence will add 1.92% to your Avoid. Doesn't sound like much until you need just that last ~4% to make it...
Currently (with gift of the wild which does increase your Agil) you are sitting at 76%.
IMHO, yeah. I'd sack the stats for the Avoid. Buffs can help your health, a good healer can keep you alive, but if you are getting hit with those crits/crush blows then you really are making them work much harder to keep you alive and chancing a death blow when you are low on health. Better to stay alive.

It seems a lot of your gear has a bunch of +spell damage. I would start by replacing those as your spell damage will come from your wep (either one that you choose to go with). And really, the Def/Mig list is worth following. Makes life easy. Most of it is quest chain stuff too.

If your defense is hurting, what about Adamantine Figurine from 2nd SLab boss?

Also, you might get Shoulderguards of the Bold from Murmur, and Platinum Shield of the Valorous from Hellmaw. Yes, they are all warrior pieces, but they can help you get geared up for heroics.

I got mine first try on my pally, then got it first try on my warrior. :D to be fair though, those have also been the only times i've ever seen it drop. lucky me eh?

I dont mean to gloat but I must have had the best tank piece drop rate in my quest to gear up for heroics.

I think the one piece that had taken the longest was my old D3 shoulders from Laj in Bot. I must have ran that instance 10x before they dropped. I saw the shield drop like 6 times and never needed it because I already had the Shadow Labs one (glows/looks like the crystal pulse shield).

Glad to see them go when I picked up these like 3 weeks later:

Thats just how hunting for specific pieces is though. Sometimes you get lucky and get it on your first run never to see it drop again. Other times it takes 10 runs to get it only to see it drop everytime you run the instance afterwards. I call it the Blizzard hates me theory. Dont worry the feeling is somewhat mutual.
