This is for anyone who has an epic flyer, but does not have a netherdrake yet. I had something interesting happen to me yesterday, and I want to see how duplicable it is.
Got to a floating island where you turn into an orc. Dismount. turn on aspect of the wild and fly back to a normal area. Then come back here and let me know if your netherdrake is still there. Another thing I'm testing is if it's just wild or any aspect. I've had this happen a few times, but I've only gotten it to happen once on purpose, and I'm not entirely sure what's causing it, as one time I didn't have any aspect on at all. The drake will of course only last until you dismount. This is similar to a herbalist picking dreaming glory, which accomplishes the same thing.

Hmmmm, I'll have to test that. I had the orc / netherdrake mount illusion hold for me once when I'd left the area but didn't know why.
The illusion still being active after you leave bug has been a bug since netherwing dailies were released. People use to sit in shatt all the time with the illusion so it looked like they already had their mount. If you've seen as many of them as I have, though, you can spot at a glance whether the drake they're riding is real or a fake. I'm fairly sure Blizzard knows about the bug, but I don't think they've attempted to fix it.

I haven't had the exact problem you describe but on the little floating island just afeter where you turn into the orc, if I am standing close to the crystals I can't mount. The animation for the mount will start but never finishes, this is usually with aspect of the viper or hawk up. It can also be pretty amusing to watch, as I usually try to jump just as the mount happens so it looks like I leapt into the saddle of the drake. When the drake doesn't appear, there I am, hopping around this little island all alone
I also have problems on dismount from my drake, anywhere in nether wing, where I will hit the button to dismount, and it does, but then it immiately starts the remount sequence unless I start another action. I have gotten used to the problem for the most part but I sometimes still miss it and find myself remounted before I can begin mining.

That's a landing 'bug'. If your netherdrake hasn't got his feet under him and his wings folded along his back, the game hasn't recognized you're standing. I think its due to the jagged terrain on that island. You can either: click your mount to dismount or toggle up / down until the netherdrake 'lands'.
This happens if you turn into the orc-on-a-netherdrake while on the floating island then fly off it. You will stay on the netherdrake until you dismount.
